A perfect home for polar bears
Here in the Arctic, it is January – winter time – and the temperature is -30ºCelsius.
It isn’t easy living here, but the polar bear is adapted to this extreme place. Its
fur looks white, but it’s actually transparent – you can see through it. Under the
fur, the polar bear has got black skin. The bear’s thick fur keeps it warm in the
cold weather and because it looks white, it helps to hide the bear in the snow.
The polar bear has got very big paws with thick fur on them. These big paws

make it easier for the bear to walk on the ice and snow. They also help the bear
to swim.
Polar bears eat seals and they can travel thousands of kilometres to look for
their food. They’ve got a very good sense of smell – it’s strong enough to smell a
seal from 1.6 kilometres away. When it smells a seal under the ice, the bear will
stand by the ice for hours – sometimes days – waiting for the seal to come up.
For most animals, the Arctic is a difficult place to live. But it’s the perfect home A seal
