History of Olympics
The first written official Olympics Games was held in 776 BC in honor of god Zeus and is held every
four years. It was organized by Ancient Greeks which demonstrated the importance of linking sport
and culture.
In 393 AD, the Roman Emperor Theodosius banned the Olympics Games for religious reasons,
claiming that it encouraged paganism. Olympics was revived at the first Olympic Congress which was
organized by Baron Pierre de Coubertin. The games were held at the Grand Amphitheatre at the

Sorbonne University from the 16th to 23rd June 1894 after which the International Olympic Committee
was created. The guided principles of the Olympics are:
• Promoting the development of the physical and mental qualities that form the foundation of
the sport.
• Educating young people through sport in the spirit of mutual understanding and friendship
with a view to help build a better, more peaceful world.
• Sharing the Olympic ideal with the whole world and creating an international sense of
goodwill.
• Bring together athletes from all over the world for a major celebration of sport every four
years.
The Olympics Rings
The Olympics rings are the official symbol of the Olympic Movement. There are five interlacing rings of
the colors blue, yellow, black, green, and red. The rings are set upon a white background. It was
designed by Baron Pierre de Coubertin in 1913. The five rings represent the five parts of the world
won over to Olympism. It represents the union of
the Americas, Africa, Asia, Oceania and Europe.

The Olympics Flame
This is the most visible symbol of the Olympic Games. During the ancient Games in Olympia, a scared
flame burned continually on the altar of the goddess Hera.
Olympics Torch
The tradition of the Olympic Torch Relay culminates in the lighting of the Olympic Cauldron at the
Opening Ceremony of each game.

The Motto
The motto in Latin is “Citius, Altius, Fortius – Communiter” and in French: “Plus vite, Plus haut, Plus
fort – Ensemble”. On July 20th, the International Olympic Committee approved a change in the motto
that recognizes the unifying power of sport and the importance of solidarity. The change added the
word “together” after the dash to, “Faster, Higher, Stronger, – Together.”

The United States topped the medal table with forty gold and one-hundred and twenty-six medals in
total. China tied with the United States on achieving forty gold medals having a total of ninety-one
medals. Japan won twenty gold medals with a total of forty-five medals, followed by Australia
achieving eighteen gold and fifty-three medals overall. Great Britain won a sum of sixty-five medals.
France acquired sixteen gold and sixty-four in total.

Simone Biles Report
Introduction
Simone Biles is considered to be one of the greatest gymnasts in the history of the sport. She is known
for being the fifth female gymnast to claim four gold medals at a single event; also, for her consistency
and complexity of her performances. This report explores her early life, achievements, and challenges.

Early Life and Background
Simone Biles was born on March 14th, 1997 in
Columbus, Ohio, U.S. She grew up in Texas, in the Houston after she and her sister were adopted by
her grandparents, Ronald and Nellie Biles. At the age of six she had a strong interest in gymnastics
which began by going to a day-care field trip to Bannon’s Gymnastix. For eleven years she was under
the guidance of her coach Aimee Booran. She won gold in a floor exercise and bronze in vault at
Women’s Junior Olympic National Championships in 2010 before advancing into the elite level of
competition in 2011.
Gymnastics Career and Achievements
2013 – She won the world gymnastics championship, being the first African American to claim the
title. She won a silver medal in the floor exercise and a bronze medal in the balance beam.
2014 – Won four gold medals in the women’s team competition, individual all-around, balance beam
and floor events in the World Championships. Simone Biles also won a silver in vault.

2015 – She won the balance beam and floor exercise titles.
2016 – Won four medals in Rio de Janeiro Olympics. Gold medal in the team event, individual all-
around, floor and vault events.
2018 – Took a short break from gymnastics then return to competition. At the U.S. National
Championship, she won all five events including a record setting fifth all-around title.
2019 – Won five medals at the U.S. National Championship, four being gold.
2021 – Become the first female gymnast to land the sport’s most difficult vault. Also, she captured the
seventh all-round title, and won three gold medals and one bronze.
2023 – Won her eighth all-around title; won gold in the balance beam and floor exercise and claim
silver in the vault.
2024 – Won her ninth all-around title at the U.S. Championship, qualifying for
Olympics trials, where she later made the team. She won gold in the team event
and the individual all-around. On the vault she won gold, and silver on the for-floor
exercise.
Challenges
In 2021, during the Tokyo Games she withdrew from most events due to the twisties, a mental block
in which gymnasts lose their spatial orientation during aerial moves. This sparked discussions about
athletes’ well-being.
