A ballad includes the telling of a tale as well as a surprise ending. Using
Ii evidence from the poem, explain how these features are included in ‘The 3
Tale of Custard the Dragon’.
Ballads are stories told in verse – tales of adventures and heroism – story of
Belinda and her pets. Rhyme scheme: aa, bb throughout the poem and
includes many poetic devices like similes, metaphors, onomatopoeia words,
imagery, alliteration, assonance, repetition, which give a musical effect to
the poem. Coward Custard always crying for a nice safe cage – becomes
courageous – act of heroism – saves everyone.
With ‘Enlightenment’, wisdom and virtue naturally comes to a man. Relate
to the life of Gautama Buddha and justify your answer.
Gautama Buddha …life as a royal prince … befitted royalty…… shielded
from all the sufferings of this world. One day, when he was twenty five
years old, while out for hunting, chanced upon a sick man, an aged man and
a funeral procession, which moved him so deeply and he set out into the
iii world to seek enlightenment concerning the sorrows he had witnessed. He 3
wandered for seven years and finally sat down under a Peepal tree, where he
vowed to stay until he enlightened and started meditating. He got
enlightenment after seven days and hence he became known as the Buddha
(the Awakened or the Enlightened) and he renamed the tree as ‘Bodhi Tree
(Tree of Wisdom). First sermon – ultimate truth of life…. Shared his
wisdom and virtue with the world through his teachings.
Valli didn’t like the way the elders on the bus treated her during her bus
ride. Describe how would you feel and react if you were to find yourself in a

The sight of the food maddened him suggests that the seagull was so hungry
that when he saw the food he excitedly wanted to have it. he had been
V hungry for the past 24 hours and desperately wanted to eat something, but 3
he could not get it which made him furious. Hunger and anger to take food
from his mother compelled him to dive from the ledge and this compelled
him to open his wings and soon he was flying. In the beginning the seagull
was terrified but the fear was momentary it started flapping its wings and
soon he was flying.

Ausable was different from other secret agents in more ways than one.

living beings. Similarly, the poems ‘A Tiger in the Zoo’ and ‘Trees’ stress
on the necessity of freedom and how valuable it is. Based on the given
statements, comment on how animals, trees and humans alike value
freedom and struggle to survive when their basic right to be free is snatched
from them.

Anne had a wonderful family and several friends but when she was with her
friends, she could only think of having a good time. She had everything in
life but what she lacked was having a true friend. She could not get too
close to any human being and she had no expectation of this eventuality
undergoing a change any time in the future. So she chose to confide in her
diary. She treated it as another person who was listening to her daily
accounts. She wrote all her stories in it. Se treated her diary as an insider
and considered it to be her best friend with whom she shared all her
thoughts and feelings.

placed in a situation similar to Matilda, what would you have done. Write
your views.
The Necklace’ by Guy de Maupassant with a strong message that is one
should live within one’s means and vanity is an evil. ………..The story
centres round Matilda Loisel, who is a beautiful woman…always dreams of
riches….suffers greatly because of her desire to appear rich and
fashionable. …married to a clerk and leads an ordinary life..one day
husband gets an invitation to attend a dance party given by the Minister of
Public Instruction. Matilda borrows a diamond necklace from her rich
friend Madame Forestier to wear it at the party. She looks charming and

everybody praises her. Madam Loisel (Matilda) was a great success at the
ball. She looked very pretty, elegant and graceful. All the men noticed her
and wanted to be introduced to her. But when she returns home, she finds
that she has lost the necklace. She and her husband borrow a big amount of
money to replace the necklace. Both of the world hard for ten years to pay
off their debt. Their life becomes miserable. One day, after the debt, is paid
off. Matilda comes across Madame Forestier. Matilda is shocked to learn
from her that the necklace was made of artificial diamonds and its price was
not more than 500 francs….understands…..One should live within one’s
means..
