1. Scope of Work:
The purpose of this Method of Statement is to describe the procedures and safety precautions necessary for
performing excavation works for the horreya building foundation. This includes the excavation of soil, slope
stabilization, and waste removal according to the design specifications.

2. Responsibilities:
 Project Manager: Oversees the project and ensures work follows the schedule and specifications.
 Site Engineer: Supervises all on-site activities, ensuring work complies with quality and safety
standards, and coordinates with subcontractors.
 Safety Officer: Ensures that all personnel follow safety protocols, conducts daily safety inspections, and
monitors hazard control.
 Excavation Crew: Carries out excavation works according to the work procedure and safety guidelines
provided.

3. References:
 Standards: Egyptian Code for Design and Construction of Concrete Structures (ECP 203-2007)
 Project Documents: Approved excavation drawings, soil investigation reports, and risk assessments.

4. Equipment:
 Excavators
 Bulldozers
 dump trucks
5. Work Procedure:

5.1 Preparation

 Site Survey: Conduct a survey to verify excavation boundaries as per project drawings.
 Utility Detection: Ensure that all underground utilities are identified and marked.
 Traffic and Pedestrian Control: Set up barriers and warning signs to protect pedestrians and vehicles
near the excavation site.
 Safety Barriers: Install barricades, caution tape, and appropriate signage around the perimeter of the
excavation zone.
 Pre-Excavation Meeting: Conduct a safety briefing with all workers to review the method of statement,
emergency procedures, and PPE requirements.

5.2 Execution

 Step 1: Excavation Start

Begin the excavation process using an excavator, starting at the shallow end and moving gradually to
deeper areas. Keep spotters nearby to guide the equipment and ensure no personnel enter the excavation
area without proper PPE and authorization.
 Step 2: Slope Stabilization
If the excavation depth exceeds 1.2 meters, implement slope stabilization measures such as trench
shields or benching to prevent cave-ins. Follow OSHA requirements for slope gradients based on soil
type.
 Step 3: Monitoring Groundwater
Continuously monitor for groundwater seepage. In case of water presence, use dewatering pumps and
ensure that discharge follows environmental regulations.
 Step 4: Excavation Depth Verification
At regular intervals, verify that the excavation depth aligns with the project specifications. The Site
Engineer will inspect the area for accuracy and stability.
 Step 5: Load Removal
Use dump trucks to transport excavated material to designated waste disposal sites or for reuse, per
project requirements. Drivers must follow site-specific traffic routes to avoid disrupting other site
activities.
 Step 6: Final Inspection and Approval
Conduct a final inspection to ensure the excavation meets the required depth and dimensions. Obtain
approval from the Project Manager before proceeding to the next phase of construction.

5.3 Completion and Cleanup

 Site Cleaning: Remove all equipment, unused materials, and waste.
 Backfill (if applicable): Begin backfilling operations in layers if required, ensuring each layer is
compacted as per project specifications.
 Barrier Removal: Remove all safety barriers once excavation works are complete and the area is safe.
6. Quality Assurance and Control:
 Inspection Plan: Daily inspections by the Site Engineer to ensure compliance with project
specifications.
 Testing Requirements: Check soil stability regularly; conduct inspections to confirm trenching and
excavation slopes are within specified limits.
 Documentation: Maintain inspection logs, depth measurements, and any adjustments made on-site.
Reports should be filed daily and accessible for review.

7. Safety Precautions:
 Hazards Identification: Key hazards include trench collapse, contact with underground utilities, and
heavy equipment movements.
 Risk Control Measures:
o Ensure trench shields or shoring for excavations deeper than 1.2 meters.
o Use only certified personnel for machinery operation.
o Maintain a minimum distance of 2 meters between personnel and operating machinery.
 PPE Requirements: All personnel must wear hard hats, steel-toed boots, gloves, high-visibility vests,
and dust masks as needed.
 Emergency Access: Keep emergency access clear of obstructions.

8. Environmental Considerations:
 Dust Control: Water down excavation areas during dry conditions to suppress dust.
 Noise Control: Limit excavation work to specified hours to minimize noise pollution. Use sound
barriers where needed.
 Waste Management: Dispose of waste materials at approved sites, separating hazardous waste
according to regulations.
 Groundwater Protection: If dewatering is required, ensure that water is directed to a safe location
without contaminating nearby groundwater sources.

9. Emergency Procedures:
 Emergency Contact Information: Provide contact details for the Safety Officer, Project Manager, and
emergency services.
 Evacuation Plan: Mark clear evacuation routes and designate assembly points. Conduct regular drills to
ensure personnel are familiar with procedures.
 First Aid: Maintain a first aid kit at the site, with personnel trained in basic first aid readily available.

10. Appendices:

 Drawings: Attach excavation layout and design drawings.

 Risk Assessments: Include site-specific risk assessments and mitigation plans.
 Safety Data Sheets (SDS): Attach relevant data sheets for any hazardous materials involved.
