Lesson : Verbs / Aspects of the Verbs
Verbs – express action or state of being
1. Simple present tense – used for habitual actions, express present being or action,
timeless and general truths, and future actions involving scheduled events
Examples:
a. Habitual action
She studies her lessons every day.
b. Present being or action
Helen bakes chocolate cake.
c. Timeless and general truth
Sun is the center of the solar system.
d. Future action involving scheduled event
The trains arrive at 5:00 a.m.
Pattern: s- form of the verb – singular subject
base form – plural verb
I and you – base form
2. Simple past tense – used for completed past actions, past habitual actions and past
duration
Examples:
a. Completed past action
We went to Palawan last summer.
b. Past habitual action
Maria made stitches when she was in elementary.
c. Past duration
They talked on the phone for forty minutes.
Pattern : regular verbs – add d or ed
irregular verbs – change the spelling or copy
3. Simple future tense – we can express future time by using shall or will
Pattern : shall – used with the pronouns I and we
will - used with nouns and the pronouns you, he,
she, it
and they
Examples :
They will join the election of the officers.
I shall meet you tomorrow.
Pattern : will / shall + base form of the verb
