गोविन्द दामोदर स्तोत

॥ 1॥
अग्रेकु रूणाम्अथ पाण्डवानाााां
दुःशासनेनाहृत-वस्त्र-केशा
कृष्णा तदाक्रोशत्अनन्यनाथा
गोववन्द दामोदर माधवेवत ।।
agrē kurūṇāmatha pāṇḍavānāṃ
duḥśāsanēnāhṛtavastrakēśā ।
kṛṣṇā tadākrōśadananyanāthā
gōvinda dāmōdara mādhavēti

agrē — in front; kurūṇām — of the kuru dynasty; atha — then;


pāṇḍavānāṃ — of the Pandavas; duḥśāsanēnā — by the wicked
dushasana; āhṛta — hold by hands; vastrakēśā — cloths and hairs;
kṛṣṇā — Draupadi; tadā — that time; ākrōśad — cried out; ananya
— having no other

In front of kuru’s and Pandavas wicked duḥśāsanēna try to


strip cloths of Draupadi by holding his hairs on hand, having
no other lord she cried out “gōvinda dāmōdara mādhavēti”

॥ 2॥
श्री कृष्ण ववष्णो मधु-कैटभारे
भक्तानुकम्पिन् भगवन् मुरारे
रायस्त्व मााां केशव लोकनाथ
गोववन्द दामोदर माधवेवत ।।
śrīkṛṣṇa viṣṇō madhukaiṭabhārē
bhaktānukampin bhagavan murārē ।
trāyasva māṃ kēśava lōkanātha
gōvinda dāmōdara mādhavēti

śrīkṛṣṇa — glorious kṛṣṇa; viṣṇō — lord Vishnu; madhukaiṭabhārē


— killer of demons madhu and kaiṭabha; bhaktānukampin
— merciful to his devotees; bhagavan — O god; murāre — enemy
of the demon mura; trāyasva — protect; māṃ — me; kēśava — O
one has long black hairs; lōkanātha — lord of world

O kṛṣṇa, O viṣṇō you kill madhu, kaiṭabha demons but you are
so merciful to your devotees. O god, enemy of mura, with long
hairs so all devotes sing together “gōvinda dāmōdara
mādhavēti”
॥ 3॥
ववक्रेतु-कामा वकल गोप-कन्या
मुरारर-पादार्पित-चित्त-वृत्त्तुः
दध्याददकाां मोहवशात् अवोित्
गोववन्द दामोदर माधवेवत ।।
vikrētukāmā kila gōpakanyā
murāripādārpitachittavṛttiḥ ।
dadhyādikaṃ mōhavaśādavōchad
gōvinda dāmōdara mādhavēti
vikretukāmā — desiring to sell; kila — indeed; gopakanyā —
young gopi; murāripādā — obsorbed in murāri lotus feet;
chittavṛttiḥ — state of mind; dadhyādikaṃ — curd and other
things; mōhavaśād — enchantment; avōchad — spoke
desiring to sell milk, curd, butter, etc., the mind of a young gopi
was so absorbed in the lotus feet of Krishna that instead of
calling out “Milk for sale,” she bewilderedly said, “Govinda!”,
“Damodara!”, “Madhava!”
॥ 4॥
उलूखले सम्भृत-तन्डु लााांश्च
सैघट्टयन््यो मुसलैुः प्रमुगधाुः
गायन्न्त गोप्यो जवनतानुरागा
गोववन्द दामोदर माधवेवत ||
ulūkhalē sambhṛtataṇḍulāṃścha
saṅghaṭṭayantyō musalaiḥ pramugdhāḥ ।
gāyanti gōpyō janitānurāgā
gōvinda dāmōdara mādhavēti
ulūkhale — On the mortar; sambhṛta — collected; taṇḍulā —
grains of rice; ṃścha — and; saṅghaṭṭayantyō — grinding
together; musalaiḥ — with the pestle; pramugdhāḥ — playfully
engaged; gāyanti — singing; gōpyō; janitānurāgā —
affectionate towords their children;
॥ 5॥
काचित् कराम्भोज-पुटे वनषण्णाां
क्रीडा-शुकाां ककिशुक-रक्त-तुण्डम्
अध्यापयामास सरोरुहाक्षी
गोववन्द दामोदर माधवेवत ||
kāchitkarāmbhōjapuṭē niṣaṇṇaṃ
krīḍāśukaṃ kiṃśukaraktatuṇḍam ।
adhyāpayāmāsa sarōruhākṣī
gōvinda dāmōdara mādhavēti
kāchit — somewhere; karāmbhōjapuṭē — in the folds of a lotus
like hands; niṣaṇṇaṃ — hidden; krīḍāśukaṃ — playing with
parrot; kiṃśukaraktatuṇḍam — with reddish hook nose;
adhyāpayāmāsa — taught; sarōruhākṣī — lotus-eyed one
A lotus-eyed girl instructed the red-beaked pet parrot that was
seated in the cup of her lotus hand in uttering the holy name,
as she said, “Govinda!”, “Damodara!”, “Madhava!”
॥ 6॥
गृहे kāci गोप-वधू-समूहुः
प्रवत-क्षणाां वपण्जर-साररकानाम् ।
स्त्खलद्-वगराां वािययतुाां प्रवृत्तो
गोववन्द दामोदर माधवेवत ।।
gṛhē ghee gōpavadhūsamūhaḥ
pratikṣaṇaṃ piñjarasārikāṇām
skhaladgirāṃ vāchayituṃ pravṛttō
gōvinda dāmōdara mādhavēti
gṛhē private — in every house; gōpavadhūsamūhaḥ — groups
of cowherd women; pratikṣaṇaṃ — at every moment;
piñjarasārikāṇām — of the birds in cage; skhaladgirāṃ — in
broken voice; vāchayituṃ — speak; pravṛttō — engaged in
In each and every house, a bevy of gopa-women is engaged in
making the caged parrots constantly utter, “Govinda,”
“Damodara,” and Madhava.”
॥ 7॥
पर्यययण्ण्ककाभाजम् अलम् कुमाराां
प्रस्त्वापयन््योऽखखल-गोप-कन्याुः
जगुुः प्रबन्धाां स्त्वर-ताल-बन्धाां
गोववन्द दामोदर माधवेवत
paryyaṅkikābhājamalaṃ kumāraṃ
prasvāpayantyō'khilagōpakanyāḥ
jaguḥ prabandhaṃ svaratālabandhaṃ
gōvinda dāmōdara mādhavēti
paryyaṅkikābhājamalaṃ — in swinging swing; kumāraṃ —
there child’s; prasvāpayantyō — making sleep;
akhilagōpakanyāḥ — all the cowherd maidens; jaguḥ —sang;
prabandhaṃ — a song; svaratālabandhaṃ — composed with
musical notes
All the Gopis, expertly cradling the young Krishna on a spotless
bed, would sway Him gently to sleep. As they skilfully sang
compositions set to musical notes and rhythm, their sweet
lullabies resonated, creating a soothing atmosphere. In unison,
they chanted the divine names 'Govinda, Damodara, Madhava,'
gently lulling Him into peaceful rest.
॥ 8॥
रामानुजाां वीक्षण-केचल-लोलाां
गोवप गृही्वा नव-नीत-गोलम्
आबालकाां बालकम् आजुहाव
गोववन्द दामोदर माधवेवत
rāmānujaṃ vīkṣaṇakēlilōlaṃ
gōpī gṛhītvā navanītagōlam
ābālakaṃ bālakamājuhāva
gōvinda dāmōdara mādhavēti
rāmānujaṃ — younger brother of balarama; vīkṣaṇakēlilōlaṃ
— restless eyes playing; gōpī; gṛhītvā — taken hold of;
navanītagōlam — butter ball; ābālakaṃ — as child;
bālakamājuhāva — she called;
play of mischief, Lord Krishna, the younger brother of
Balarama, gracefully danced and dodged around a Gopi with
eyes full of restlessness. Determined to entice Him, another
Gopi held a ball of fresh butter, calling out to Him sweetly: 'O
Govinda, Damodara, Madhava...' Her voice echoed with love,
trying to capture the attention of the playful and enchanting
Lord.
॥ 9॥
ववचिर-वणायभरणात्भरामेऽ-
-त्भधेवहऽवक्राम्बुज-राजहाांसे
सदा मदीये रसनेऽग्र-रङ्गे
गोववन्द दामोदर माधवेवत
vichitravarṇābharaṇābhirāmē-
'bhidhēhi vaktrāmbujarājahaṃsi
sadā madīyē rasane 'graraṅgē
gōvinda dāmōdara mādhavēti
vichitravarṇā — with wonderful color; ābharaṇ — with
ornaments; ābhirāmē — is delightful; abhidhēhi — show;
vaktrāmbuja — lotus face; rājahaṃsi — the king of swans;
sadā — always; madīyē — mine; rasane — on the tongue;
agraraṅgē — in the forefront
O my tongue, blessed by the presence of these eloquent,
ornamental, and delightful syllables, my mouth has
transformed into a lotus. You, my tongue, are like the playful
swan gracefully navigating in this lotus of words. Let the
foremost joy be in articulating the names 'Govinda,'
'Damodara,' and 'Madhava'—uttering these divine names as a
sweet and cherished melody.
॥ 10॥
अङ् कायधरूढाां चशशु-गोप-गूढाां
स्त्तनाां धयन्ताां कमलैक-कान्तम्
सम्बोधयामास मुदा यशोदा
गोववन्द दामोदर माधवेवत
aṅkādhirūḍhaṃ śiśugōpagūḍhaṃ
stanaṃ dhayantaṃ kamalaikakāntam ।
sambōdhayāmāsa mudā yaśōdā
gōvinda dāmōdara mādhavēti
aṅkādhirūḍhaṃ — sitting on the lap; śiśugōpagūḍhaṃ — with
the child hidden; stanaṃ — her breast; dhayantaṃ —nurising;
kamalaikakāntam — captivating like a lotus;
sambōdhayāmāsa — addressed; mudā — joyfully; yaśodā
The one and only Lord of Lakshmi, as an inconspicuous little
cowherd baby, was seated in the lap of mother Yashoda,
drinking her breast-milk. Merged in bliss, she addressed Him
as “Govinda,” “Damodara,” and “Madhava.”
