Overview: To discuss the role of UNIX, it current uses and applications and the Unix
family of operating systems
Syllabus
Unix historical perspective; Distributions and derivatives: Solaris, Linux,
Unix architecture and director structure
User interfaces: GUI and CLI
Commands: commonly used commands
File management: create and manage, directories,
Text editors: emacs, sed, vi, gedit, libre … (selecting, searching, sorting, counting,
trimming)
Shells: bourne-shell, c-shell, tshell (wild card, history)
Programming and Scripting – awk, nawk
Remote access: FTP, rcp, SSH, telnet
Customizing and monitoring the system
Text: Unix Shells by Examples, Ellie Quigley, Prentice Hall, 4th edition.
Evaluation:
Final Exam: (60%)
One 2-hour Final Paper
