Roll #: Name:

Title: Industrial Problem

Objective:
1. Solve an industrial problem using PLC and Electro-pneumatic devices
Apparatus
• CM-184 PLC Trainer
• Festo Electro-Pneumatic Trainer

Industrial Problem

In a certain industry two plastic parts are bonded together by application of a bonding material
between them and pressing them together with a defined force for a length of time. The worker
applies the bonding paste with a brush, joins the two parts together, and place them under a
pneumatic press. A capacitive proximity sensor detects the presence of the part. Now, when the
worker presses a momentarily pressed normally open push button, a pneumatic press operates and
presses the two parts together. The force is applied for 5 seconds. This is made sure by an inductive
sensor that detects the full extension of the pneumatic press’ cylinder. The timer that times 5
seconds only begin when the pneumatic cylinder has fully extended. The press retracts after 5
seconds and a logger (counter) record that one part has been processed. If the logger’s count
reaches 5, that is 5 parts have been processed, the whole process should rest for 20 seconds. In
these 20 seconds, even if the worker presses the push button, the pneumatic press should not
operate. A schematic is shown in figure 1 below.

Schematic of the industrial problem.

In this lab, students will understand the electro-pneumatic circuit required for the given problem
and with the help of the instructor design a ladder diagram for AB SLC500 PLC. Moreover, the
electro-pneumatic circuit shall be attached to the PLC outputs and inputs and the whole process will
be demonstrated.

Question 1: Implement the problem, solved in this lab session, through Ladder Diagram
implemented on OpenPLC.

Question 2: Create a ladder diagram that

can monitor the drill breakage of a certain
drill machine. The drill (D1) operates for as
long as a push button (S1) is kept pressed.
The drill on the drilling unit is monitored by
means of a drill breakage sensor (B1). If the
drill is broken, the sensor interrupts the
circuit which is being used for turning on
the drill. Moreover, a Buzzer (H1) sounds an
alarm if this happens. The buzzer may only
be switched off via NC latching push button
S2. Lastly, the drill can only operate if the
switch S2 is not pressed.

Design ladder diagram in both, the RSLogix

and the OpenPLC software and insert the
solution in the given spaces.
