INTRODUCTION OF THE PROJECT
Deep Water is an excerpt from American jurist William Douglas’s book ‘Of Men
and Mountains’. It is an autobiographical account of the author’s experience with
fear. Deep Water is about the writer’s journey of overcoming the fear of water,
which is deeply rooted in him since childhood. The author nearly drowned in a
swimming pool when he was young, and this experience developed an aversion to
water in him. The story focuses on the fact that childhood fears must never be
treated lightly, and if they are not tackled, then they make deep inroads into one’s
psychology.
Pandemic is an outbreak of infectious disease that occurs over a wide
geographical area and that is of high prevalence, generally affecting a
significant proportion of the world’s population.Humanity has faced
numerous pandemics that have caused catastrophic consequences. One of the
primary ways in which humanity fails and pandemics occur is through our lack of
preparedness.Humanity's failure to address issues such as poverty, inequality, and
access to healthcare has also contributed to the occurrence of pandemics. This
failure to address the root causes of pandemics has allowed diseases to emerge
and spread with devastating consequences.

6. QUESTIONS
*How did Douglas finally get rid of the fear he had of water? (Delhi 2009)
Answer:
The terror that seized Douglas because of his misadventure with water twice was
so intense that he sought professional help to overcome this fear. He engaged a
swimming instructor who gave him intensive training for six months to ensure he
overcame his fear of water which he eventually did.
*How did the incident at the YMCA pool affect Douglas? (All India 2009)
Answer:
Douglas, a ten year old boy, was standing alone at the YMCA pool when a big bully
of a boy picked him up and tossed him into the deep end and at once he was at
the bottom of the pool. Though he did manage to come up with extreme
difficulty, he could never again go back to the pool. He started fearing and
avoiding water. Whenever he went near water a haunting terror would seize him.
*How did the instructor turn Douglas into a swimmer? (Delhi 2013)
Answer. The instructor adopted a systematic method to turn Douglas into a
swimmer. He first made Douglas shed his initial fear of water by making him cross
a pool suspended by a rope attached to a pulley. The instructor held the other end
of the rope and relaxed and tightened it from time to time. Then he taught the
narrator to breathe while swimming, and finally the leg movements and other
strokes.

2.Case Study:
This case study provides a snapshot of the educational responses and effects of
COVID-19 in India and is part of a comprehensive assessment of the effects of and
responses to COVID-19 on the Education Sector in Asia.
The case study considers the direct effects of school closures and reopening and
identifies its impact on learners, their families as well as on the overall education
system. The objectives of the analysis are:
· to assess and estimate the various impacts of the COVID-19 epidemic on
the education sector and stakeholders in India;
· to examine policy and financial implications on progress towards achieving
SDG 4-Education 2030; and
· to identify examples of promising responses and strategies in education and
associated social sectors, which can be shared with other countries. Finally,
the case study presents lessons learned and recommendations for building
back better and increasing the resilience of the education system to future
shocks.
This case study includes an in-depth thematic deep dive into Community-based
Education and how it supported continuity of learning during school closures.
This situation analysis is a collaboration between UNESCO, UNICEF ROSA and
UNICEF EAPRO partly funded by the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) under
the UNESCO-UNICEF-World Bank joint project on Global and Regional Response to
the COVID-19 Pandemic.

REPORT ON DEEP WATER
The story Deep Water tells us how the writer overcome his fear of water and
learned swimming through sheer determination and willpower. He had developed
a terror since childhood. The message conveyed from this story is that it is not
death but the fear of death that creates terror in our mind ,so that fear needs to
be shaken off. Also any fears can be conquered if we try hard enough.
The chapter Deep Water has shown and inteoduced us to the concept of fear or
phobia. Phobia is a type of anxiety disorder that causes an individual to
experience extreme irrational fear about a situation, living creature, place or object
etc.It magnifies perceived threats and trigger exaggerated stress responses.
The American Psychiatric Association identifies three major categories of phobias:
· Social phobia
· Agoraphobia
· Specific phobias
SYMPTOMS
A person with a phobia will experience the following symptoms.
· a sensation of uncontrollable anxiety when exposed to the source of fear
· a feeling that the source of that fear must be avoided at all costs
· not being able to function properly when exposed to the trigger
· acknowledgment that the fear is irrational, unreasonable, and exaggerated,
combined with an inability to control the feelings
TREATMENT
Treatment for phobias can involve therapeutic techniques, medications, or a
combination of both.
REPORT
The topic" Where Humanity Fails ,Pandemic Occurs" tells us about humanity's
failure to address issues such as poverty, inequality, and access to healthcare
which has also contributed to the occurrence of pandemics. Throughout history,
humanity has faced numerous pandemics that have caused catastrophic
consequences. From the Black Death in the 14th century to the Spanish flu in the
20th century, pandemics have had a profound impact on societies across the
world. The lack of preparation has allowed diseases to spread rapidly and
uncontrollably, leading to devastating consequences for millions of people.
In today's interconnected world, diseases can spread rapidly across borders, yet
many countries and institutions have failed to work together to address the global
nature of pandemics. This lack of coordination has led to fragmented and
ineffective responses to pandemics, allowing diseases to spread
unchecked.Furthermore, the lack of investment in public health infrastructure and
research has also contributed to the occurrence of pandemics.
The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a dramatic loss of human life worldwide and
presents an unprecedented challenge to public health, food systems and the
world of work. The economic and social disruption caused by the pandemic is
devastating: tens of millions of people are at risk of falling into extreme poverty,
while the number of undernourished people, currently estimated at nearly 690
million, could increase by up to 132 million by the end of the year. The spread of
COVID-19 in India began with the first case being reported in Kerala on January 30,
2020. In a year’s time, more than twenty-eight million people were tested positive
for COVID. Around five million people – the highest recorded number of
diagnosed cases – were from Maharashtra; the next in line was Karnataka, Kerala
and Tamil Nadu with more than two million cases each, followed by Andhra
Pradesh with over one million cases.

STUDENT REFLECTIONS
This project served as a platform for me to understand different aspects of
phobia, its symptoms and treatment.By doing this project I came to known how
phobia can affect a person's life and the methods one need to follow to overcome
it. It also helped me to know about different kinds of mental disorders other than
the phobia.
This project helped me to understand how humanity is important in a
contemporary world like this. It allowed me to explore different aspects of
pandemic and their remedies. Through this project I came to know that pandemic,
then, is a universal human experience, affecting us all and forcing us to reevaluate
our priorities and behaviors across a range of dimensions.
