Sri Potti Sreeramulu was an Indian freedom fighter known for his
pivotal role in the creation of Andhra State. Revered as "Amarajeevi"
("Immortal Being"), he is remembered for his commitment to social justice
and upliftment of Dalits, organizing fasts to advocate for their rights and
access to religious sites. Influenced by Mahatma Gandhi, Sri Potti
Sreeramulu participated in major independence movements, including
the Salt Satyagraha and Quit India movement, and was imprisoned
multiple times.

2. Sri Potti Sreeramulu is most noted for his 56-day hunger strike in
1952, demanding a separate state for Telugu-speaking people from the
Madras Presidency. His death during the protest sparked widespread
riots and public outcry, prompting Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru to
announce the formation of Andhra State. This movement set a precedent
for the reorganization of States along linguistic lines in India. Sri Potti
Sreeramulu's legacy is commemorated in Andhra Pradesh and beyond as
a symbol of sacrifice and dedication to regional and social causes.

3. In the reference 1st cited, Government issued orders to celebrate


Birth Anniversary of Sri Potti Sreeramulu on 16th March every year as
State Function. In the reference 2nd cited, Government also issued orders
to observe Death Anniversary of Sri Potti Sreeramulu on 15th December
every year as State Function.

4. In the reference 3rd cited, Government issued orders to observe the


Death Anniversary of Amarajeevi Sri Potti Sreeramulu on 15th December
every year as Atmarpana Day. Suitable programs shall be organized at
the State level, District Level, Constituency Level, Mandal Level and Gram
Panchayath Level on Sri Potti Sreeramulu's life.

5. The State level program on 15th December, Atmarpana Day of


Amarajeevi Sri Potti Sreeramulu, will be held at Sri Tummalapalli Kala
Kshethram, Vijayawada, wherein Hon’ble Chief Minister will be Chief
Guest and Tributes will be paid to Amarajeevi Sri Potti Sreeramulu. (The
tasks / responsibilities entrusted to the Departments in respect of State
Level Programme is enclosed herewith.)

6. All the Collectors & District Magistrates are requested to observe


the Death Anniversary of Amarajeevi Sri Potti Sreeramulu on 15th
December every year as Atmarpana Day in a befitting manner.

7. All the Educational Institutions are requested to conduct / organize


Essay writing, Quiz and elocution competitions on Sri Potti Sreeramulu
for the students in all the Schools / Colleges in the State by December
14th and prize distribution should be organized on December 16th.
8. The I&PR Department should produce a comprehensive
documentary and reading material on Sri Potti Sreeramulu's life, covering
his family background, childhood, education, his commitments towards
Social Justice, participation in major independence movements as well as
his 56-day hunger strike for a separate Andhra state and its
consequences, and the changes that took place in the country after his
self-sacrifice.

9. All the Departments of A.P.Secretariat, all the Heads of


Departments and all the Collectors & District Magistrates shall take
necessary action accordingly.
