Introduction

Introduction
Pictometry® for AutoCAD Map3D (“Pictometry extension”) integrates Pictometry Oblique imagery into
AutoCAD Map3D. After you install the Pictometry extension, you’ll use the Pictometry toolbar to set up the
extension and to use its features. After clicking the Pictometry toolbar button, you'll click a point on the map
in Map3D, causing the extension to open a Pictometry image for the location you clicked.

System requirements
Before installing the extension, make sure the following requirements are met:

 Your system has a minimum of 256 MB of RAM.

 You have Internet Explorer 7 or later.

 A user account has been created for you. A user account includes a user name (an email address),
plus a password.

Resolution and settings

Although we support 800 x 600 resolution, we recommend that your screen’s resolution be set to 1024 x 768
or higher. The toolbar may not show up correctly at a lower resolution. For the best view of images, set the
display color to 24-bit or higher.

For best performance

For optimal performance while running your application with the Pictometry extension, we recommend you
follow these guidelines:

 While your application is running, keep the number of open programs to a minimum. The more
memory that’s used by other programs, the less memory there is available for viewing your images.

 Make sure your computer has at least 256 MB of RAM, since memory helps performance.

Installing the Pictometry extension

This topic provides instructions for installing the Pictometry® for AutoCAD Map3D Extension Version 1.0.1.0

To dock or undock the Image Viewer window:

1 With the mouse pointer, grab the top edge of the window (if docked) or the title bar (if
undocked), and drag it to another spot on the screen.

Note: When near another docked part of the screen, the window will automatically try to
attach (dock) to the other area. To prevent the window from docking, hold down either
the CTRL key or the SHIFT key until you decide where to locate the window.

2 Release the mouse button. If it’s not near a docked area, the window floats on the Map3D
application.

To close the Image Viewer window:

 Click its Close button (X).

Image Viewer window persistence

The Pictometry extension remembers the Image window’s size and location for the duration of your Map3D
session, even if you close the window. The next time it’s opened, the Image Viewer window is in the same
position as when you last closed Map3D.

Opening images in the Image Viewer window

To open images in the Image Viewer window, click the Pictometry button and then click a location in your
map. The Image Viewer window opens and shows the best north-up image (if there is one).

The image polygons

When you open an image in the Image Viewer window, the Pictometry extension displays two polygons that
help you to better orient yourself between the map and the image open in the Image Viewer window:

 view-region polygon (footprint of the area currently visible in the Image Viewer window)

 image polygon (footprint of the entire image)

If you click a new location in the image or navigate to a different location, the extension moves the map to
the same location, so the image and map are always synchronized.

The Pictometry image also shows any line, point, and polygon layers displayed on your AutoCAD map.

Viewing a different image of the same area

If more than one image of the same (or similar) orientation is available for the current scene, you can swap
the current image for another. The Pictometry extension keeps a list of available images. The toolbar in the
Image Viewer window shows how many images are in the list, as well as which of the images is currently in
view. (For example, “1/5” means the first image of 5 is in view.)

To view a different image of the same area:

Do one of the following:

 Click to view the next image in the list.

 Click to view the previous image in the list.

 Click and select the desired image from the list.

A different image of the same scene, taken from the same direction opens.

Note: At the end of the list, the button retrieves the first image in the list. At the beginning of the list,

returns the last image in the list.

Pictometry® for AutoCAD Map3D Guide 8

Viewing Pictometry images

Viewing from a different direction

While viewing an image, you can easily view the current scene from a different direction—north, south, east,
west, and orthogonally (straight down). The Navigation Camera buttons at the edges of the image let you
view north-up, east-up, south-up, west-up, and orthogonal views.

Click the Navigation Camera button that corresponds to the desired view (orientation) as follows:

Oblique views

Hint: Move your mouse over the button to see which side of its image will be up (at the top of the
Pictometry Image Viewer window). For example, if you want to see the current scene from the south
(a north-up image), find the camera whose tool tip shows the word "North".

An image of the desired orientation opens in the Image Viewer window.

You can also use the View Ortho button on the Image Viewer toolbar to display an Orthogonal image that
most closely covers the same geographic area as the Oblique image currently displayed in the Image Viewer
window.

To view an Orthogonal image:

 Click the View Ortho button. The Image Viewer window automatically displays the best
Orthogonal image for the area of interest.

Viewing images from different shot levels

Pictometry images are shot at two different levels: Neighborhood and Community. Clicking the
Neighborhood View button allows you to view an image from a lower altitude, allowing you to focus in on
details, such as fire hydrants or building heights. Clicking the Community View button allows you to view
an image from a higher altitude to show more geographic area. Community images are helpful for locating
and navigating to points of interest.

To view a Neighborhood image:

 Click the Neighborhood View button. The Image Viewer window automatically displays the
best Neighborhood image for the area of interest.

To view a Community image:

 Click the Community View button. The Image Viewer window automatically displays the best
Community image for the area of interest.

Centering a location
If you find a location of interest, you can center that location in the Pictometry Image Viewer window by
using the Image Tool. The Image Tool also initiates a search on the location you click, so you have access to
the best available images of the desired location.

coverage, or you might have entered the incorrect path to the Tile Server when you
set up your extension.

You entered a partial The Image Viewer window displays the center of the geographic area in which that
address address is located. For example, if you entered a zip code only, you'll see the
center of the geographic area that has that zip code.

If the search results are not what you expect

If you cannot find the address you are looking for, try re-entering the search criteria with commas between
the parts of the address. For example, instead of "123 Main Street Anywhere NY" you might try "123, Main
Street, Anywhere, NY"

direction.

Note: The results will not be accurate if you cross over the path.

3 When you’ve outlined the entire area, drag the mouse pointer to meet the starting point, then
release the mouse button.
The Area Tool automatically completes the polygon, even if you release the mouse button
before you return to your starting point.

To measure the area of any straight-sided shape:

1 Click the Area Tool.
2 At the desired starting point, press and hold the mouse button and drag a straight line.
3 Press and release the V key to create a vertex (corner) and drag to create the next line.
4 Repeat Step 3 to continue outlining the shape to be measured.
5 When you’ve outlined the entire perimeter, release the mouse.
The Area Tool automatically completes the polygon, even if you release the mouse button
before you return to your starting point.

Measuring height
Use the Height Tool to measure the height of an object or the area of the side of an object (such as the side
of a building) in an Oblique image. (Because Orthogonal images are captured straight down, the Height Tool
does not apply to them.)

For greater accuracy when measuring heights, the line you drag to measure height should match the plumb
line as much as possible.

To measure height:
1 Click the Height Tool.
2 Press and hold the left mouse button on a point at the base (where it meets the ground) of the
object you want to measure the height of.

Important: Be sure to measure height by starting at ground level and moving upwards. If
you cannot see the ground level starting point, you must estimate its location.

The application draws a plumb line—a true vertical (perpendicular to the ground), which
remains plumb if you waver left or right as you drag the mouse.
3 Drag the mouse upwards and release it at the ending point.
4 (Optional) To measure the area of a building or other feature, press CTRL and drag sideways.
The measurement appears on the Status Bar and in the Image Viewer window.

Frequently asked questions

What should I do about missing components when installing?

Question: When I install the Pictometry extension, I get an error message saying that some components are
missing. What components are missing and how do I install them?

Response: The Pictometry extension is based on .NET and therefore requires .NET 3.5. In addition, you
must install the .NET components of Map3D. If they have not been installed, you can add them by going to
"Add/Remove Programs," selecting Map3D, and clicking "Change." If there is no entry for the .NET
components, then you are missing .NET. You’ll need to re-install these applications in the following order:

1 .NET 3.5
2 Map3D (Be sure that the .NET components are installed.)
