Introduction
Pictometry® for AutoCAD Map3D (“Pictometry extension”) integrates Pictometry Oblique imagery into
AutoCAD Map3D. After you install the Pictometry extension, you’ll use the Pictometry toolbar to set up the
extension and to use its features. After clicking the Pictometry toolbar button, you'll click a point on the map
in Map3D, causing the extension to open a Pictometry image for the location you clicked.
System requirements
Before installing the extension, make sure the following requirements are met:
A user account has been created for you. A user account includes a user name (an email address),
plus a password.
While your application is running, keep the number of open programs to a minimum. The more
memory that’s used by other programs, the less memory there is available for viewing your images.
Make sure your computer has at least 256 MB of RAM, since memory helps performance.
Installation procedure
The setup wizard presents a sequence of screens. Throughout this process, follow screen directions as they
appear, and click Next to move to the next installation screen.
3 After reading the terms and conditions, click I Agree and then click Next to accept the terms of
the license agreement. The Select Installation Folder window opens.
4 Click Next to accept the default installation folder, or click Browse to select a different
installation folder, then click Next.
5 On the Confirm Installation window, click Next to start the installation.
Installation begins and a progress bar shows the status of the installation process. During this
phase an additional window may briefly appear. (This is a normal.)
When the wizard is done installing the application, the following window opens.
6 Click Close to exit the setup program. The Pictometry extension is now installed.
Note: If you need to disable the Pictometry extension for any reason, follow the instructions for disabling
other Map3D extensions.
After installing
After installing the Pictometry extension, you’ll load the extension into Map3D and, if you have a custom
license, you’ll select the Pictometry license file on the Pictometry for AutoCAD Settings dialog.
You can also optionally specify various other settings (such as units of measure and display options) as
described in “Extension settings” on page 19.
Command Description
Pictometry Searches for images by location (images that contain the geographic point you
click on the map).
PictSettings Opens the Pictometry for AutoCAD Settings dialog so you can change the
extension’s settings (such as units of measure, image filters, and whether overlays
are displayed on images).
PictFeedback Opens a feedback form. Use this form to provide feedback about the extension
when you do not need a response or technical support.
If you need technical support, please follow the normal customer support process
so that we can handle your questions or problems as quickly as possible.
2 Click Browse, navigate to, and select the license file. Click Open.
3 Click OK to close the Settings dialog.
2 Enter the email address you use to log in and your old password. Then enter a new password
twice and click Change.
Note: When near another docked part of the screen, the window will automatically try to
attach (dock) to the other area. To prevent the window from docking, hold down either
the CTRL key or the SHIFT key until you decide where to locate the window.
2 Release the mouse button. If it’s not near a docked area, the window floats on the Map3D
application.
view-region polygon (footprint of the area currently visible in the Image Viewer window)
If you click a new location in the image or navigate to a different location, the extension moves the map to
the same location, so the image and map are always synchronized.
The Pictometry image also shows any line, point, and polygon layers displayed on your AutoCAD map.
Note: At the end of the list, the button retrieves the first image in the list. At the beginning of the list,
Click the Navigation Camera button that corresponds to the desired view (orientation) as follows:
Orthogonal view
Oblique views
Hint: Move your mouse over the button to see which side of its image will be up (at the top of the
Pictometry Image Viewer window). For example, if you want to see the current scene from the south
(a north-up image), find the camera whose tool tip shows the word "North".
You can also use the View Ortho button on the Image Viewer toolbar to display an Orthogonal image that
most closely covers the same geographic area as the Oblique image currently displayed in the Image Viewer
window.
Centering a location
If you find a location of interest, you can center that location in the Pictometry Image Viewer window by
using the Image Tool. The Image Tool also initiates a search on the location you click, so you have access to
the best available images of the desired location.
To center a location:
1 Click the Image Tool, then click the desired location in the Pictometry Image Viewer window.
Note: If you wish to change the point of interest, simply click a different location.
2 When you are done using the Image Tool, deactivate it by clicking the Pan Tool.
The address is found The Image Viewer window displays an image that shows the location of the address
you typed.

coverage, or you might have entered the incorrect path to the Tile Server when you
set up your extension.
You entered a partial The Image Viewer window displays the center of the geographic area in which that
address address is located. For example, if you entered a zip code only, you'll see the
center of the geographic area that has that zip code.
Panning images
The Pan Tool lets you see a different part of an image or map by dragging your mouse while the Pan Tool is
active.
The Pictometry Image Viewer toolbar contains the following tools and buttons.
Tool Description
Pan Tool Scrolls the image around in the Image Viewer window.
Image Tool Lets you center a location of interest in the Image Viewer window. Also initiates a search
on the location you click, so you have access to the best images of that location.
Distance Tool Measures the distance between two points in an image or the cumulative distance along a
series of straight-line segments.
To measure the perimeter of a rectangle, press CTRL while holding down the mouse
button. To create a vertex when measuring polygons, press the V key.
The distance is shown on the Status Bar (at the bottom of the screen).
Height Tool Measures the height of a building or an object in an Oblique image, starting from the
ground.
Area Tool Calculates the area of any part of an image. To measure the area of a rectangle, press
CTRL while holding down the mouse button. To create a vertex when measuring
polygons, press the V key. To measure freeform lines, hold the ALT key. When you use
the V key, the tool automatically closes the polygon after you release the mouse button.
Elevation Tool Gives the elevation above sea level of a location in an image and measures the slope
between two locations in an image.
Tool Description
Location Tool Lets you view the coordinates of a location in an image or map. The geographic
coordinates for the point you clicked are shown on the Status Bar (at the bottom of the
screen).
Bearing Tool Measures the bearing (the orientation from True North) of an angle you outline in the
active image. Pressing CTRL draws an additional line and displays the relative angle
between the two lines.
Extract Tool Lets you select a portion of the image in the Image Viewer window and export it to a JPG
file. The extracted image is saved to the file with the options you specified on the Settings
dialog.
Save Lets you save an Orthogonal image along with its associated World file.

features.
Before using the measurement tools, be sure that the unit of measure is set as desired.
Note: For Oblique images, click near the base of buildings for more accurate coordinates.
Measuring distance
Use the Distance Tool to measure the distance between two or more points in one or more images or maps.
To measure distance:
1 Click the Distance Tool.
2 Press and hold the left mouse button on the starting point.
Note: To insert a vertex (corner), press and release the V key. To drag a freeform line, hold
down the ALT key and drag the mouse pointer along the path you want to measure.
(You will be able to drag the mouse in any direction.)
3 Drag the mouse to the ending point and release the mouse button. A line appears on the image
as you drag.
The measurement appears on the Status Bar and in the Image Viewer window.
Measuring perimeter
You’ll use the Distance Tool to measure perimeter—the distance around the outside edge of an object. You
can measure the perimeter of any straight-sided shape.
Measuring bearing
Use the Bearing Tool to measure the bearing of a line in an image. How you draw the line is important, as
shown in the following illustrations:
To measure bearing:
1 Click the Bearing Tool.
2 Press and hold the left mouse button on the starting point.
3 Drag the mouse pointer in the desired direction to an ending point, then release the mouse
button.
The measurement appears on the Status Bar and in the Image Viewer window.
Measuring angles
Use the Bearing Tool to measure the angle formed by the intersection of two lines in an image.
To measure an angle:
1 Click the Bearing Tool.
2 Press and hold the left mouse button on the point that is the vertex of the angle. Drag a line
from the vertex along one side (ray) of the angle.
3 Press and hold the CTRL key, then drag the mouse pointer away from the first side to draw the
second ray of the angle. Release the mouse button and the CTRL key.
The measurement appears on the Status Bar and in the Image Viewer window.
Measuring area
The Area Tool lets you measure the area of any shape, whether it has curved or straight sides. After you
outline the perimeter of the area to be measured, the area measurement appears on the Status Bar and in
the Image Viewer window.
To create a vertex (corner), press and release the V key, then drag the mouse in the new
direction.
Note: The results will not be accurate if you cross over the path.
3 When you’ve outlined the entire area, drag the mouse pointer to meet the starting point, then
release the mouse button.
The Area Tool automatically completes the polygon, even if you release the mouse button
before you return to your starting point.
Measuring height
Use the Height Tool to measure the height of an object or the area of the side of an object (such as the side
of a building) in an Oblique image. (Because Orthogonal images are captured straight down, the Height Tool
does not apply to them.)
For greater accuracy when measuring heights, the line you drag to measure height should match the plumb
line as much as possible.
To measure height:
1 Click the Height Tool.
2 Press and hold the left mouse button on a point at the base (where it meets the ground) of the
object you want to measure the height of.
Important: Be sure to measure height by starting at ground level and moving upwards. If
you cannot see the ground level starting point, you must estimate its location.
The application draws a plumb line—a true vertical (perpendicular to the ground), which
remains plumb if you waver left or right as you drag the mouse.
3 Drag the mouse upwards and release it at the ending point.
4 (Optional) To measure the area of a building or other feature, press CTRL and drag sideways.
The measurement appears on the Status Bar and in the Image Viewer window.
Measuring elevation
Use the Elevation Tool to measure the elevation (height above sea level) of a location in an image.
Measuring slope
The Elevation Tool uses elevation data to measure slope (the change in elevation between a starting
location and an ending location).
To measure slope:
1 Click the Elevation Tool.
2 Hold down CTRL, then hold down the left mouse button on the starting location.
3 Drag the mouse along the slope to the ending location.
4 Release both the CTRL key and the mouse button at the ending location.
The measurement appears on the Status Bar and in the Image Viewer window.
Extracting images
To export only a portion of the image shown in the Image Viewer window, you'll draw a rectangle around that
part of the image with the Extract Tool.
Before extracting
Before you extract an image, set up image extraction defaults on the Pictometry for AutoCAD Settings dialog.
If you're exporting an Ortho image, you can also export a World file. (You don't need to set this option in
advance.)
Querying a layer
If you have access to GIS data for your imagery, you can query visible GIS layers in two ways:
Query a single GIS object and view data associated with that object.
Query all GIS objects within a region by drawing a rectangle around the region in the image. All GIS
objects within or touching the boundary of that region are highlighted in the Map3D map and in the
Data Table window.
You'll use the GIS Query Tool to query your GIS data. You can query any layer that is visible on the image.
Note: To use the GIS Query Tool, you must have access to GIS data for your imagery.
The GIS
object clicked
The Data Table opens and highlights the data associated with the object you clicked.
Tip: You might need to scroll to see the data for the object you clicked.

error description.
Problem Explanation
No matching images found You clicked the Pictometry and clicked your map, but no image appears in
the Image Viewer window and the message “No matching images found”
appears on the Status Bar.
You might not have available images for the area you clicked, or you
might have entered the incorrect path to the Tile Server when you set up
your extension.
-or-
You may have clicked the map outside of the region covered by your
images.
Response: The Pictometry extension is based on .NET and therefore requires .NET 3.5. In addition, you
must install the .NET components of Map3D. If they have not been installed, you can add them by going to
"Add/Remove Programs," selecting Map3D, and clicking "Change." If there is no entry for the .NET
components, then you are missing .NET. You’ll need to re-install these applications in the following order:
1 .NET 3.5
2 Map3D (Be sure that the .NET components are installed.)
3 The Pictometry extension

4 Type the requested information and choose a mode for file transmission (HTTP or FTP). Then
click Submit.
Note: You should choose a mode based on which protocol is available in your environment.
For example, to use FTP, you’ll need the appropriate file transfer software on your
computer. If you are unsure of which mode to choose, see your System Administrator.
5 Save the file to your hard drive and note the name of the folder to which the file was saved.
(Your browser might automatically save the file to the "Desktop" folder, or it might allow you to
navigate and choose the folder to download the file to.)
6 When the download is complete, close any open download dialogs.
7 Exit the software if you want to install the update right away.
After exiting, you can run the downloaded file at any time to install the updates. After opening
the file, follow the installation instructions, which start on page 2.
Note: When you install a new release of the extension, the installation program replaces the
current software with the new release.
