Q.1) The coefficient of static friction between the two blocks is 0.5 and the
table is smooth. The maximum horizontal force that can be applied to
move the blocks together is _____𝑁.

Q.2) A body of mass 400 g slides on a rough horizontal surface. If the


frictional force is 3.0 N.
a) Find the angle made by the contact force
on the body with the vertical.

an incline
(a) What can be the maximum angle θ of the
incline with the horizontal so that the block does not slip on the plane?

(b) if the inclined makes an angle θ/2 with the horizontal, find the frictional
force on the block.

Q.4) A 2 𝑘𝑔 block is placed over a 4 𝑘𝑔 block


and both are placed on a smooth horizontal
surface. The coefficient of friction between the
blocks is 0.20. Find the acceleration of the two
blocks if a horizontal force of 12 𝑁 is applied to
the upper block (𝑔 = 10 𝑚/𝑠 2 )

Q.5) A 2 𝑘𝑔 block is placed over a 4 𝑘𝑔 block


and both are placed on a smooth horizontal
surface. The coefficient of friction between the
blocks is 0.20. Find the acceleration of the two
blocks if a horizontal force of 12 𝑁 is applied to
the lower block (𝑔 = 10 𝑚/𝑠 2 )

Q.6) Find the acceleration of the two blocks of 4 𝑘𝑔 and 5 𝑘𝑔 mass if a


force of 40 𝑁 is applied on 4 𝑘𝑔 block. Friction coefficients between the
respective surface are shown.

Q.8) Find the accelerations 𝑎1 , 𝑎2 , 𝑎3 of the three blocks shown in figure. If
a horizontal force of 10 𝑁 is applied on 3 𝑘𝑔 block.

three blocks shown in figure. If a horizontal
force of 10 𝑁 is applied on 7 𝑘𝑔 block.

Q.10) Two blocks 𝐴 and 𝐵 masses 𝑚𝐴 = 1 kg and 𝑚𝐵 = 3 kg are kept on


the table. Coefficient of friction on every surface is 0.2. The maximum
force 𝐹 that can be applied on 𝐵 horizontally, so that the block 𝐴 does not
slide over the block 𝐵 is :
(a) 8 N (b) 16 N
(c) 40 N (d) 12 N

Q.11) Consider the situation shown in figure. Calculate


(a) the acceleration of the 1.0 𝑘𝑔 blocks.
(b) the tension in the string connecting the 1.0 𝑘𝑔 blocks
(c) the tension in the string attached to 0.50 kg.

Q.12) If the tension in the string in figure is 16 𝑁 and the acceleration of
each block is 0.5 𝑚/𝑠 2 , Find the friction coefficients at the two contacts
with the block.

Q.13) The friction coefficient between the table


and the block shown in the figure, is 0.2.
Find the tensions in the two strings.

Q.14) Two blocks in contact sliding down an inclined surface of


inclination 30° . The friction coefficient between the block of mass
2.0 𝑘𝑔 and the incline is 𝜇1 and that between the block of mass 4.0 𝑘𝑔 and
the incline is 𝜇2 . Find acceleration of 2.0 𝑘𝑔 block if
a) 𝜇1 = 0.20 and 𝜇2 = 0.30
b) 𝜇1 = 0.30 and 𝜇2 = 0.20

Q.15) The friction coefficient between the board and the floor shown in
figure is 𝜇. Find the maximum force that the man can exert on the rope so
that the board does not slip on the floor.
