• Decoding is breaking words into individual
sounds (phonemes).
• Struggling decoders can't easily separate
sounds like "buh," "aah," and "guh" in
"bag."
• Signs: trouble sounding out words, slow
reading rate, reading without expression.
COMPREHENSION
D I F F I C U LT I E S
• Comprehension is the ability to understand
something! (in this case, a reading/text)
• Comprehension relies on decoding skills.
• Struggling decoders find it hard to understand
and remember text.
• Signs: confusion about word meanings, inability
to connect ideas, lack of concentration.

• Retention is the ability to keep something in
your memory!
• Retention needs both decoding and
comprehension.
• High-level cognitive skills like memory are
crucial.
• Signs: trouble summarizing, difficulty
connecting to prior knowledge, applying text to
experiences.
