INTERNATIONAL INDIAN SCHOOL AL JUBAIL

SENIOR PRIMARY SECTION 2024-25

CLASS: V SUBJECT: SCIENCE
L# 4 HUMAN NERVOUS SYSTEM
I. Define the following:

1. Neurons: The nerve cells that bind together to form nerves are called neurons. They have special
thread-like structures called fibres.
2. Reflex Action: The automatic actions like the blinking of the eye which we do not think before
acting are called reflex actions.
3. Medulla: Medulla is known as the brain stem. It connects the brain to the spinal cord, a cable
of nerves through which messages pass between the brain and rest of the body.

II. Answer the following questions: -

1. What is the nervous system made of?

Ans: The nervous system consists of brain, spinal cord and the nerves. The brain gets its
signals from various parts of the body through the nerves.

2. How is our brain protected?

Ans: Our brain is very delicate and well protected. It is surrounded by sacs filled with fluid.
These serves as cushions. The brain and the fluid sacs are covered by hard bony skull. The
skull protects the brain from shocks jerks and bumps.

3. What is skin? How can we keep our skin healthy?

Ans: The skin is a protective layer that covers the entire body surface.
Following are the ways to take care of our skin: -
i) We should take a bath everyday with soap to clean away dirt, dust and germs from the
skin.
ii) We should always wear clean and loose clothes to allow free circulation of air.
iii) We should not wear other people’s clothes to avoid skin diseases.
4. What precautions should be taken to protect our eyes?

Ans: Eyes need special care as they are very delicate organs. We must follow these rules to
protect our eyes.

i. Wash and clean your eyes regularly with cold and clean water.
ii. Do not work in a dim or very bright light.
iii. Sit at least six feet away from the television set.
iv. Never rub your eyes with a dirty towel or dirty hands. This can cause infection to your
eyes.
III. Write a short note on different kinds of nerves.

Ans: The nerves are directly connected to the brain or the spinal cord. There are three kinds of

nerves.

i) Sensory nerves: These nerves are connected to the sense organs and bring messages from
the sense organs to the brain. These messages are interpreted by the brain and we are
able to see, hear, smell, taste, touch.
ii) Motor nerves: These nerves carry order from brain or the spinal cord to the muscles and
glands.
iii) Mixed nerves: These nerves do both ways of signals transmission, i.e., they carry messages
from the brain as well as carry orders from the brain.

IV. Write the differentiate between Cerebrum and Cerebellum:

Ans:
Cerebrum Cerebellum

1. It is the largest part of the 1. It lies beneath the

brain. cerebrum.

2. It controls our speech, 2.It controls our voluntary

memory, intelligence and movements such as walking,
senses. dancing etc..

3. It helps us to think, learn 3.It helps us to maintain our

and remember. balance.
V. Give Reason:

1. We taste different food with the help of our tongue.

Ans: We experience the different flavours of food through our taste receptors like sweet,
spicy, sour, bitter and salty on our tongue. The tongue has other kinds of receptors, which
reports about heat, cold, pain and texture.

2. We pull our hands back when we touch a thorn.

Ans: A message from nerves called pain receptors travel along the nerves to the spinal cord.
A new message travels back to the muscles of our hand, in response we jerk our hands
away.

VI. COMPLETE THE SERIES:

1. Signals coming to brain: Sensory nerves :: Signals out from the brain: Motor nerves
2. Walking: Voluntary action : Hand jerks : Reflex action

V. Draw, colour and label the Internal structure of eye.
