WHAT TO EXPECT ON YOUR FIRST DAY?

WHAT TO WEAR
Dress casual and comfortable. Layers work best for fall, winter, and spring. Most people wear shorts and a t-
shirt or polo-style shirts. Bring a windbreaker or pullover. White or non-marking closed-toe, rubber-soled
shoes only. Always remember a hat or visor, sunscreen or sunglasses.

WHAT TO BRING
Always keep a change of clothes and a towel in your car when participating in on-the-water classes. If your
class is an all-day class bring a lunch and water.

DIRECTIONS
1801 W. Coast Highway. Between the Balboa Bay Club and the Sea Scout Base. Approximately 1 ½ miles south
of the Newport Blvd. overpass on Coast Highway. Look for the Mariner’s Mile Bridge across PCH connecting
our two buildings. The entrance to our driveway is at the south end of our property closest to the Balboa Bay
Club.
WEATHER
Classes are held regardless of the weather. If it is too rainy or windy, classes will move indoors.

PARKING
Parking is almost always tight at the Waterfront Campus. Be sure to allow enough time to drive, park and still
get to your class on time.
• When parking at the Sailing Center in the double spaces be sure not to block others and if you arrive
first, please pull forward and look for a classmate to park behind you.
• Do not leave a space open in front of your car.
• Do not park in red zones.

Additional free parking is available along PCH. The public parking lot at Tustin and Avon is just a short walk but
does require payment from 8 am to 6 pm. Be sure to cross PCH using the skyway bridge. When parking in the
Avon lot, it’s easier if you have already downloaded the ParkMobile App. There are multiple parking zones
within the Avon parking lot so be sure to use the correct ParkMobile Zone when you park.

If parking is available, you may also park across the street at the Professional Mariner Training Center and use
the skyway to get across PCH.

WHERE TO MEET
You will learn the location of your classroom when you arrive on-site. We continue to use both our outdoor
downstairs and indoor upstairs classrooms. Basic Cruising, Bareboat and Powerboat courses will meet aboard
the boat.

MISSED CLASS
There are no make-ups. If you know in advance, you’ll miss a class, ask your instructor what will be covered so
you can read ahead. Otherwise, just show up at the next session of class. Missing the first class of a new
session is not advisable.

BOOKS
Our Lazarette bookstore carry books for all our on-the-water classes as well as seminars and seamanship
courses. Lido students will benefit from OCC’s Beginning Sailing manual “Sails in the Sun/Masts in the Mud”.
Harbor 20 and Shields students will need the US Sailing Basic Keelboat book, and Cruising students need the US
Sailing Basic Cruising. The books are not required but highly recommend helping to reinforce learning between
classes. Powerboat classes use US Sailing/US Powerboating’s Start Powerboating Right.
Books range in price from $10 to $24.95. Purchase your book on the first day of class, or from the office during
the week.

BEGINNING SAILING
Your first day of Beginning Sailing is spent learning all about the boat and a bit on sailing theory. You probably
will get on the water for a short time. The rest of the class meetings will be 75% sailing!

CAPSIZE
Lido 14s do capsize and people “step” off docks now and then. While most people make it through the course
without getting wet, it’s certainly a possibility. Everyone wears a life vest. We recommend you leave all
electronics in your car and carry a change of clothes and a towel as well when taking any on-the-water class.

HEALTH & SAFETY

Safety is very important to your instructor. Classes will not be on the water in dangerous conditions. Everyone
always wears a life vest (PFD), regardless of the weather. PFDs are provided, but you are welcome to bring
and use your own USCG approved PFD.

Students are responsible for evaluating their health prior to each class. Participants exhibiting ANY cold or flu
symptoms should stay home until symptoms are completely gone. NO EXCEPTIONS.
