. Milkha Singh, the iconic sprinter, also known as " The Flying Sikh" is no more amongst

S us. Born on 20 November1929 in a Sikh Rajput family of Rathore clan & Govindpura
Muzaffargarh in British Punjab Province ( Now Muzaffargarh District, Pakistan). He was
one of 15 siblings and was orphaned during Partition when his Parents along with others were
killed by mob. Escaping the post partition riots in Punjab, the Milkha Singh moved to Delhi and
lived for some time with Family of his married sister Ishvar and after spending some time at
refugee camp in Purana Qila and resettlement colony in Shahdara, both in Delhi , he gained entry
in Indian Army In 1951 where he was selected by the Army for special training in athletics after
finishing sixth in a compulsory cross country run for new recruits.
The Honorary Captain Milkha Singh was awarded the Padma Shri in 1959,India's fourth-
highest civilian honor, in recognition of his sporting achievements. The legendary athlete is a
four-time Asian Games gold medalist and the 1958 Commonwealth Games champion, but his
greatest performance remains the fourth- place finish in 400 m final in a time of 45-73 seconds
during 1960 Rome Olympics which was the Indian national record for almost 40 years. He also
represented India in the 1956 summer Olympics in Melbourne and the 1964 Olympics in Tokyo. All of Singh's medals have
been donated to the nation. They were displayed at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi but later moved to sports
museum in Patiala.
