HYPOTHESIS TESTING:
Null Hypothesis
Alternative Hypothesis
HYPOTHESIS
TESTING

It is a decision-making procedure for

Assessing claims concerning a
population.

• It essentially tests an assumption.

we can make about a population.
HYPOTHESIS

is an assumption or conjecture about a

population parameter which may or may not
be true.
NULL HYPOTHESIS ALTERNATIVE HYPOTHESIS
It is signified by Ho. • It is designated as Ha or H1.
• This is the first assertion. • It is contradictory to the null hypothesis.
• It shows no major difference or changes. • It shows that there is a considerable difference.
Nothing transpired, no relationship between the two. effect, modification, and link among parameters
parameters and specific value.
• The independent variable has no influence on • The independent variable affects the
Dependent variable. Dependent variable.

HYPOTHESIS
NULL AND ALTERNATIVE
HYPOTHESIS

Null hypothesis, Ho.

= (equal to, the same as, did not change from, is)

Alternate hypothesis, Ha or H1.

≠ (not equal, different, changed from, not the.
same as)
> (more than, above, higher than, longer than).
increased at the very least.
(Less than, lower than, smaller than, shorter than)
lowered or reduced from, at most.
NULL AND ALTERNATIVE HYPOTHESIS
EXAMPLES
EXAMPLE # 1
A consumer analyst reports that the mean life of a certain type of
automobile battery is not 74 months.
Null and Alternative Hypothesis in words:
Ho: The mean life of a certain type of auto mobile is 74 months.
Ha: The mean life of a certain type of auto mobile is not 74 months.
Null and Alternative Hypothesis in Symbols:
Ho: μ = 74 months
Ha : μ ≠ 74 months
EXAMPLE # 2
A radio station publicizes that its proportion of the local listening
audience is equal to 39%
Null and Alternative Hypothesis in words:
Ho: The local listening audience is equal to 39%.
Ha: The local listening audience is not equal to 39%.
Null and Alternative Hypothesis in Symbols:
Ho: μ = 39%
Ha : μ ≠ 39%
