ASA Status: 1
Anesthetic plane maintained with isoflurane gas. Heartrate, respiratory rate, SpO2
monitored during procedure.
Patient Preparation:
The abdominal hair was clipped using a #40 surgical clipper blade in an area extending
from the distal aspect of the sternum to the inguinal area and laterally just past the
mammary glands. A universal symbol for female was tattooed in the inguinal region . The
site was aseptically prepped with dilute cholohex scrub and solution followed by
application of betadine.
Surgical Procedure:
A midline skin incision was made caudal to the umbilicus . The subcutaneous tissue was
dissected to the abdominal wall. A stab incision was made into the peritoneal cavity and
extended. The right uterine horn was located and traced to the right ovary. The ovary was
retracted. A window was made in the mesovarium caudal to the ovarian vessels . The
ovarian pedicle was clamped and the pedicle was ligated with PDO using a strangulating
knot. The pedicle was then severed distal to the clamp. Hemostasis was verified and
pedicle was gently placed back into the abdomen. The procedure was repeated on the
left side. The broad ligament of the uterus was torn and any vascular bleeding present
was ligated. The uterine body and uterine arteries were ligated with a strangulating knot
using PDO. The uterine body was clamped distal to the ligatures and transected distal to
the clamp. Hemostasis was verified the uterine pedicle was placed gently back into the
abdomen. The excised uterine and ovarian tissue was removed from the abdomen.
Surgical Closure:
Abdominal wall closed using PDO with continuous pattern incorporating subcutaneous
tissue. The skin was apposed using an intradermal pattern with buried knots. Skin closed
using surgical tissue glue.

Thank you for adopting an animal from Harris County Pets. Because most of these animals are strays, we have no previous medical or
vaccination history. Therefore, we recommend taking your new pet to a veterinarian for a complete check-up within 72 hours of adoption. If
you do not have a regular veterinarian, check your information packet for a list of veterinarians that may offer a complimentary first exam. We
also recommend that your new pet have a series of vaccinations to properly protect it from disease. The next set of vaccinations should be
given by your veterinarian. If your new pet should become ill within 2 weeks of the adoption date (provided it has seen a veterinarian within
the first 3 days), you can return the animal and take up to 6 months to find a replacement. Unfortunately, we are unable to give refunds or
give reimbursements for any medical expenses incurred if treatment is sought. Please contact us if your pet becomes ill. Do not bathe your
new pet for 10 to 14 days after surgery or until the sutures have been removed. Watch the incision for any redness, swelling, or discharge.
Physical activity should be kept to a minimum for a few days to allow full recovery from the surgery. We hope you enjoy the new addition to
