How can urban design and planning, through a data-driven and system-oriented approach, optimize

the management and distribution of tourists in Amsterdam to mitigate overuse and enhance the
liveability of urban neighbourhood

Q1. What are the key factors contributing to overtourism in Amsterdam?

It leads to loads of problems like rising housing prices, the change of the public space, change in
stores and in particular overcrowdedness in neighbourhoods. This is in the end all connected to
where tourists are spending time and money. To better change and work with these transformation
we have to understand where what is happening. So in simple words in which spaces tourists are
spending time. They spend time in places by staying in a place or moving through a place. To
understand this data is used that shows where they spend time. Once it is known where they spend
time and why, we can start moving them to different places and changing the places to have less
overlast from tourists.

Tourists moving to

Q2. How can data be used to understand tourist behavior and movement in Amsterdam?

Overtourism manifests as an overwhelming influx of tourists that exceeds the carrying capacity of
urban infrastructure and natural environments, leading to significant strain on local communities, the
environment, and the cultural heritage of cities. This is ofcourse majorly influenced by the amounts
of tourists coming to the city. Right now it is around 22 million and the expectation is that this will
grow to 26 million in the next years. This will lead to even more pressure on the city.

The exceeding of the carrying capacity shows itself in many different ways, rising prices, the change
in land use and public space, but in the most prevalent way, in people on the streets. The crowds of
tourists roaming through the streets have a large impact on the city. It’s a bottom up process,
created not by individuals, but the combination of all the tourists who are influenced by a lot of
factors in their choice of spending their time at certain moments and places in Amsterdam. To
understand how and when tourists use certain areas its important to have a source which shows this.
When being able to visualise this usage, but also to dissect into patterns of movement, we can see
who contributes in which ways. We can see when and by who the overusage is taking place and how
to change the city or area to it.

For example a lot of people in certain areas on Tuesday evening because of the combo of everything,
so mover to other places or provide stuff around.

A lot of people in a spot for a certain reason, move it around

If people put reviews at a time that something went viral they are more influenced by social media.
Than can recognize which tourism pattern they have. Their tourism pattern is based on what they
visit and when.
