About Meesho
Founded by IIT Delhi graduates Vidit Aatrey and Sanjeev Barnwal in 2015, Meesho is India’s only true e-commerce
marketplace that’s playing a pivotal role in digitizing the country’s unorganized retail. Meesho, which stands for
&”meri shop” or “my shop”connects millions of consumers with sellers across the country. Meesho has grown at an
unprecedented clip over the last few years with consumers demonstrating a strong
preference for everyday lowest prices and wide assortment. Its annual transacting users crossed 145 million and the
seller base surged past 1.5 million in November 2023 – a rate of growth unmatched in the e-commerce industry.
Meesho has been contributing to nation-building by giving a fillip to micro entrepreneurship and helping create
jobs. We have enabled employment of more than 32 lakh workers in the e-commerce industry.
In June 2023, Meesho was named in the annual TIME100 Most Influential Companies list as one of the most
innovative retailers in the world.
Mission
Over the last 15 years, online retail in India focused mainly on the metros and relatively affluent consumers, paying
little attention to smaller towns and lower-income users. Meesho has been successfully solving for this cohort of
underserved consumers and sellers – the real Bharat – on its mission to democratize internet commerce.
Digitizing small businesses at scale:
Small businesses in India traditionally operated offline, which limited their discoverability and earning potential.
Further, steep marketplace commissions and competition from private labels of well-capitalized platforms
hampered their digital adoption. With a vision to enable 100 million SMBs to succeed online, Meesho introduced
industry-first benefits like zero commission, zero penalty and lowest shipping costs. Sellers on Meesho have been
able to grow their business by tapping our massive customer base, state-of-the-art tech, and low-cost pan-India
shipping through third-party logistics providers.
Redefining affordability: Leveraging tech innovations, seller-friendly policies and an asset light model, Meesho
has emerged as the lowest-cost destination catering to India’s price conscious customers. Nearly two-thirds of our
consumers have annual household incomes less than Rs 5 lakh, while ~30% come from households with annual
incomes less than Rs 10 lakh. In our estimates, 65% products on Meesho are priced ~20-30% lower than on other
platforms.
Making e-commerce accessible: Given ~80% of Meesho’s 145 million annual transacting customers come from
Tier 2+ cities and towns, we have been instrumental in bringing new to-e-commerce users online. At the same time,
~40% of Meesho suppliers are new to ecommerce as well. We host one of the largest selections of unique products
in India with >65% of our assortment exclusive to Meesho.
Building E-commerce for Bharat
Building E-Commerce for Bharat India’s unorganized retail represents a $800bn+ target addressable market, which
is 80-85% of the overall retail sector. E-commerce is expected to grow to $190-210 billion by 2027 (~38% CAGR
‘22-’27), according to BCG estimates, led by nearly 500 million online shoppers versus ~200 million currently. This
growth will be driven by consumers transitioning directly from unorganized trade to e-commerce, especially those
in the rising middle class, and shoppers from rural areas and Tier 2+ cities.
A platform for the next billion: Nearly 95% of products sold on Meesho are unbranded and ~60% are priced
under $4, demonstrating our commitment to continuously solve for affordability and bring the smallest sellers
online. Affordable, relatable merchandise mirroring local markets has helped the company make inroads into small
towns and villages across the country.
Tech innovations: In its pursuit to take e-commerce to underserved cohorts, Meesho was among the first movers
to adopt a discovery-led product interface. With ease of use as a fundamental guiding principle, we have been
relentless in our pursuit of simple UX designs and effective personalization. Further, at just 13.6 MB, Meesho is the
lightest e-commerce app in India on Google Play Store. That makes it compatible with low-end smartphones and
ensures that users get a seamless experience even in areas with poor connectivity.
Fillip to the logistics industry: Meesho alone accounts for ~50% of all shipments handled by 3PL players in India.
Our huge volume of orders (currently ~3.5 million per day) has boosted utilization across the ecosystem, enhancing
economies of scale. Meesho’s association with 3PL companies helps them to invest in Tier 2+ markets and allows
them to build infrastructure capabilities in remote regions such as the northeast. During the festive season in 2023,
we helped generate over 2 lakh seasonal jobs at our 3PL partners.
Investors
Meesho has so far raised ~$1.1 billion and was valued at c.$5 billion in its last round of funding, making us one of
India’s most well-capitalized companies in the consumer internet space. We were also the first Indian startup to
secure funding from Meta (Facebook). Other marquee investors such as SoftBank Vision Fund, Prosus Ventures,
Elevation Capital, Sequoia Capital, Fidelity and BCapital Group have backed Meesho in multiple rounds.
