PRESIDENT’S WELCOME
Welcome FFA Members!
I am excited to welcome all of you back to Orlando for our forty sixth annual
convention on behalf of the Officers and Board of Directors of the Florida Flute
Association! Unfortunately, I will not be able to meet and greet all of you in person
since I am currently 7 months pregnant. However, I am incredibly thankful that we
are able to provide an amazing in-person convention for those that are able to attend!
I would be remiss if I failed to acknowledge the commitment of our board
members during these trying times. The FFA Board has held a multitude of virtual
meetings in order to attempt to satisfy the needs of our members. We all crave the
social and in-person aspect of our musical lives, but have to remain vigilant in
regards to the safety of our members. I encourage you to visit the section of our
website for the 2022 convention and read our expectations for member safety if
you haven’t already. Thank you for including the Florida Flute Association as a
part of your life whether in person or as a loyal member who will return when
you are able. I'm certain that you will hear performances, masterclasses, and
discussions that inspire you for many years to come!
Stephanie DiMauro has worked tirelessly to put together a diverse program that
will offer something for everyone. The presenters and session organizers are so
excited to be able to offer our members world class workshops and recitals
regardless of age or ability level. Everyone is sure to benefit from the energy and
excitement of learning and listening “live”!
Jeremy Benson has also been hard at work diligently overseeing all of the
competitions including our 2nd annual Nancy Clew Eller Competition. Jeremy
once again flawlessly navigated the challenges that came with coordinating
multiple competitions with applicants from around the world. All of the applicants
are extremely talented! You will not be disappointed with the performances you will hear.
Our Technology Coordinator, Treasurer, and Exhibits Chair, Karl Barton,
continues to “wear so many hats” for our association. We all owe him a
tremendous amount of thanks for his unending dedication. Please thank Karl
when you see him this weekend!
Special thanks go to our Friday night guests, Karen Large and Judi Lampert as well
as our Saturday night guest, Brian Luce. Brian is so eager to share his flute wisdom
and insight during the Advanced Masterclass on Saturday and his warm up on
Sunday. These classes will be extraordinary learning experiences not to be missed!
Finally, our Chairman of the Board, Tammy Phillips and Technology Chair, Karl
Barton have had the time consuming task of gathering all of the necessary
documents to put this digital program book together. I encourage you to take
some time to click on each section and read the program notes, performer bios,
and all of the FFA info for this year and next.
Cheers to the 46th Annual Members Convention – Enjoy!
Jessey Andris, President

WORKSHOP AND PRESENTATION DESCRIPTIONS

An Interpretation of the Role of Myth in
Carl Reinecke’s Undine Sonata with Charlene Cannon
Friday, January 28 5:00-5:50 PM Augusta A/B
Carl Reinecke (1824-1910 ) was a noted concert pianist, conductor, and
composer. His Undine Sonata for flute and piano is based on Friedrich
de la Motte Foque’s tale “Undine.” The lecture recital explores the idea
that the “Undine” story is depicted on various levels in the sonata and
that an understanding of the story will influence the interpretation of the
piece. An analysis of the relationship between the literature source and
the music of the work, including a thematic, harmonic and motivic
analysis of the sonata are incorporated to create an understanding of the
relationship between the program and the music, and create an
interpretation of the Undine Sonata.

Match Factors with Adam Workman

Friday, January 28 5:30-6:20 PM Cove
Many flutists of all levels love their chosen equipment while others may
seek a new voice. Now celebrating their 10th anniversary with a new
Flutistry Florida location in Tampa, the Flutistry Team has worked with
thousands of flutists around the world discovering some remarkable
commonalities in player/instrument pairings along the way. Do you prefer
silver or gold, this brand or that, a certain headjoint style over another, or
a specific concept of sound? "Match Factors" demystifies how one's
equipment serves the player's craft & artistic vision while also providing a
basis for a successful instrument search in the future.

Why Do We Practice with Bryan Smith

Saturday, January 29 11:00-11:50 AM Cove
Practicing a musical instrument takes great time, patience, effort, and
dedication to achieve success. Most musicians, especially flutists, are
striving to achieve these values on a daily basis. This objection of this
presentation will introduce innovative ideas one can apply into their daily
practice.

Don’t Forget That Bass! with Karen Bekker

Saturday, January 268 12:30-1:20 PM Cove
This lecture recital is designed with the intent to provide the audience
with a complete knowledge and understanding of the Bass Flute. With an
in-depth pedagogical approach, this lecture will expand on the history
and development of the instrument, as we know it today. This lecture will
build the framework necessary to understand the culture of the Bass
Flute and the progression of importance it is recently having in the flute
world. This will be achieved by exploring various musical pieces, artists,
and method books in order to better understand how flutists have come
to shy away from the instrument and use it more in solo repertoire.

Make it Click with Jessica Banks

Pedagogical Pearls with Angela Muller

Saturday, January 29 3:30-4:20 PM Belle Isle
Being a studio instructor is a lot more than playing flute well. Teaching is
the art of communication! When a light-bulb turns on for a pupil, it brings
such joy and satisfaction to both teacher and student. Angela Muller will
share her pearls of wisdom gathered and collected over the years to help
take your pedagogy to the next level. Are you looking for a new
perspective to turn your studio into a gem? Tone quality, rhythmic
understanding, intonation, and FUN games will be among the topics
discussed. Students are welcome to attend.

Foundations in Jazz & Commercial Music with Brendon Wilkins

Sunday, January 30 10:00-10:50 AM Augusta A/B
Musicians in today's musical climate can gain a significant advantage
over their peers by having a diverse skill set. Remote recording has
become increasingly common, and mastery of jazz and commercial
music styles is a valuable asset. Using a three pronged approach to
study jazz and commercial music, flutists can gain fluency in a broad
range of musical styles which can increase their performing and teaching
opportunities.

FLORIDA FLUTE ASSOCIATION
SCHOLARSHIPS
The Florida Flute Association is honored to offer several scholarships as part of
its mission to encourage and educate talented flutists. FFA members are eligible
to apply for Emeritus Fund scholarships and Gilbert Study Grants offered through
the Gilbert Memorial Endowment Fund.
The Emeritus Fund is comprised of donations made in honor of former or present
teachers as well as other private donations. The aim of the fund is to provide
financial assistance to exceptionally talented middle and high school students
who are members of the FFA. Scholarships, not to exceed $500, will be paid
directly to a flute camp or masterclass. Recipients of this scholarship are ineligible
to apply the following year. Incomplete application packages will not be
considered, and all scholarship committee decisions are final.
By March 15, email a YouTube link and complete application packet to:
Dr. Karen Large, Emeritus Fund Chair, at karenmlarge@[Link]

More information is on the Scholarship Page of the FFA website at:

The Gilbert Memorial Endowment Fund is perpetuated in celebration of the lives
and legacy of Geoffrey Gilbert and his wife, Marjorie. One of the most
distinguished British flutists and teachers of flute of the twentieth century, Mr.
Gilbert provided a profound and long-lasting influence in many lives and careers
through his fifty-year career, including generous participation at numerous
conventions of the FFA. Established through the generosity of former students,
particularly Sir James Galway, the Fund is perpetuated by individual gifts.
To further the legacy of Geoffrey Gilbert, who never stopped searching for new
and better ways to perform and teach, the FFA now administers the Fund,
offering Gilbert Study Grants. The Performance Study Grant (odd years) and the
Teaching Study Grant (even years) are one-time $1000 awards to accomplished
performers and committed teachers aiming to pursue future study.

FLORIDA FLUTE ASSOCIATION HISTORY

In August of 1976, at the Fourth Annual National Flute Association Convention in

Atlanta, the inspiration for our own state flute association was born The plans for
the first Florida Flute Fair began with five friends and teachers: Nancy Clew,
Charles Delaney, Sarah Baird Fouse, Martha Rearick and Parker Taylor, bringing
colleagues and students together for concerts and ensemble playing. Here is how
we have grown:
1977 Brevard Community College in Cocoa, the first Florida Flute Fair was a one-
day event. Organized by Nancy Clew.
1978 The University of South Florida in Tampa. Organized by Martha Rearick
1979 Rollins College in Winter Park. Organized by Grace Petree Geoffrey Gilbert
gave his first Masterclass.
1980 The University of Miami in Miami, the first two-day Fair. Organized by Cheryl
Star.
1981 Florida State University in Tallahassee. Organized by Charles Delaney
1982 University of Central Florida, Orlando, organized by Grace Petree. The
organization officially became an association and the first officers were elected. We
held the first College Young Artist Competition and began publishing quarterly
newsletters.
1983 University of Florida, Gainesville, chaired by Sally Fouse. We held the first
