Question 1

Jayne, a student, is struggling to keep her attic flat clean and tidy and
decides to hire a cleaner. She takes out an advert in her local newspaper
which states: “cleaner wanted, one day a week, immediate start £7 per
hour”. The advert gives a telephone number and an address. The next
day Michael arrives at the flat with cleaning materials and says that he
accepts the offer of employment and is ready to start work provided he is
paid two months’ wages in advance. Earlier that day during a telephone
call Jayne agreed terms with Miranda. Miranda now turns up whilst
Michael is on the doorstep and says that she no longer wants the job as
there are too many stairs leading up to Jayne’s flat.

Question 2

Luke is the project manager for the refurbishment of a site at Borchester


Heritage Park. Part of the project is to re-carpet the Victorian premises.
Luke places a written order with Top Flooring Limited. Their carpet is
described in the marketing material as “durable, flexible and attractive”.
The next day Luke discusses over the telephone with the sales
representative whether gripper rods are required. The sales
representative says that the carpet is “good to go without them” The
following week Luke attends site and see that the carpet contains a check
pattern that he had not spotted in the brochure. The carpet looks as
though it is poor quality and the lack of gripper rods means that the
carpet is loosely fitted and moves around at the edges. Luke is minded to
reject the carpet.

Question 3

It is Nigel and Kim’s wedding day at the prestigious Albion Hotel in


Bromsbury. The happy couple sign a contract with the hotel offering an
all-in service including the ceremony and meal afterwards. The ceremony
has gone well and all the guests have just enjoyed a five course meal and
the after dinner speeches. Unfortunately even before the bride and groom
take to the dance floor for the first dance a large proportion of the guests
are violently ill with food poisoning. The evening quickly descends into a
disaster as guests rush off home. The prawn cocktail starter is later
identified as having caused the illnesses.

Question 4

Margaret wants to a buy a house and views 1, Villa Terrace. There is a


muddy track across the back garden that the owner tells her is used by
the next-door neighbours to reach the municipal park behind the house.
Margaret tells you that she is thinking of buying the house but asks you
what she can do to find out more about the track and whether she can
prevent the neighbours from using it.

Question 5

Beaukely Developments are building a new housing development at


Severn Way which consists of 12 affordable homes. For now, Beaukerly
Developments wish to let out the houses to tenants on long leases but
may later decide to sell the freeholds to the property to the individual
occupiers. The access to the development is tight and future occupiers will
need to give pedestrian and vehicular access to each other over private
driveways. The services (water and electricity cables) for all the houses
have also been routed through individual private gardens.

Question 6
George owns land and buildings which are leased to John who runs a mink
farm. Rachel is a member of the local animal liberation front. They agree
to break into the mink farm and release the mink. They use wire cutters to
break through the high barbed wire fence around the farm at 2am. Rachel
succeeds in releasing 100 mink which proceed to kill 500 hens on a
neighbouring farm belonging to Abdul. She then falls into a disused corn
bin because she fails to see it in the darkness and breaks her leg. As a
result of all the commotion in the building, the mink become very excited
and a further 50 mink manage to tip their cages over, escape and attack
Sue, the post-lady, as she makes her morning call.

Question 7

John is driving when a car driven by Steve pulls out of a side street and
crashes into the side of John’s car. Steve is an employee of a construction
company but was leaving site early to pick up his dry cleaning. Both cars
are written off in the incident but no one in the cars is hurt. However
Dave, a passer-by, faints from the hearing the accident and suffers
psychological damage as a result. Because of the delay John misses a
meeting with his best client. The client calls John afterwards to say
because he has been left waiting he is cancelling a large, lucrative order
he was going to place with John’s company and instead will go to a
competitor.

Question 8

Steve and Stan were working on a building site as trainee scaffolders.


Their supervisor had been called to head office for the afternoon. Whilst
working on the roof Steve and Stan decide to have a game of catch with
the scaffolding poles and promptly begin throwing a pole between them.
After a few minutes of horseplay (messing around), Steve loses his
balance upon catching Stan’s pass and falls 3 metres to a lower platform
breaking his leg on landing. The fall is witnessed by Mr Chapman, an
elderly passerby who collapses suffering from a heart seizure.

Question 9

The University of the North of England (UNE) has introduced a working


farm on its campus in order to promote a sustainable approach to food
production amongst its students. Mark is a student who supplements his
student loan by working part-time tending the rare breed pigs on the
farm. Whilst at work he leaves open a gate on a pig pen. He is then
knocked over by an escaping pig named Donald (Gloucester Old Spot) and
suffers a broken leg. Donald the pig then crosses the ring road which
causes Sanjeev, driving home from work, to drive into the back of Dan’s
car. Donald the pig is then found eating from the salad bar at the local
supermarket Betaways, which has to close whilst he is recaptured.
