1. [This question is to measure students’ ability to model an economic problem into
a linear equation system and to find its solution (LO 1) : 20]
Consider the supply and demand functions for three goods given by:
q1s = −20 + p1 − 0.5p2
q2s = −100 + 2p2
q3s = p3
q1d = 80 − 2p1 − p3
q2d = 200 − p2
q3d = 100 − 2p3 − p1
(a) Based on the above equations, construct a linear equation system that
describes the equilibrium condition.
(b) Derive the solutions for the equilibrium prices using reduced row-echelon
form.
2. [This question is to measure students’ ability in analyzing economic problem with
matrices (LO 1), total score: 15]
Suppose that a firm produces two types of output using three types of input.
Its output quantities are given by the column vector
" #
15, 000
q=
27, 000
and the prices of these are given in the row vector p = [10 12]. The amounts of
inputs it uses are given in the column vector
11, 000
z = 15, 000
15, 000
and the input prices are given by w = [10 10 8].
(a) Express the profit of the firm in matrices term.
1/3
(b) Determine the profit of the firm.
3. [This question is to measure students’ ability to model an economic problem into
linear equation system using matrix properties (LO 1), total score: 15]
Suppose that the markets for coffee and sugar are characterized by the following
demand and supply relationships:
Dc = 100 − 5pc − ps Sc = −20 + 2pc
and
Ds = 80 − 4ps − 2pc Ss = −10 + ps
where pc and ps are the price of coffee and the price of sugar, respectively.
(a) Set up the system in equilibrium as a matrix equation of the form Ap = b
where A is a 2 × 2 matrix of coefficients, p is a 2 × 1 vector of prices and b
is a 2 × 1 vector of constants.
(b) Solve for the equilibrium prices of coffee and sugar by calculating the inverse
of A if possible.
4. [This question is to measure students’ ability in analyzing properties of matrices,
vectors and linear equation system. (LO 1), total score: 30]
Answer the following problems of matrices.
(a) Let a, b, c, d, e, f, g, h, i be nonzero integers less than or equal to 9. Let
the three 3-digit numbers abc, def and ghi be divisible by 7. Using the
properties of determinant and the fact that xyz can be expressed as xyz =
100x + 10y + z, prove that the determinant of
a d g
A= b e h
c f i
is also divisible by 7.
(b) By using determinant, decide if the four following vectors are linearly in-
dependent or not:
1 −1 0 1
0 0 1 0
, , ,
2 0 1 1
−1 1 −1 0
(c) Based on the determinant obtained in point (b), find the solution of x in
the following linear equation system using Cramer rule:
x−y+w =2
2/3
z=2
2x + z + w = 8
−x + y − z = −2.
5. [This question is to measure students’ ability to analyze and solve Leontif eco-
nomic model (LO 1), total score: 20]
Consider the open economy described by the accompanying table, where the
input is in dollars needed for $1.00 of output.
income required per dollar output
housing food utilities
housing $0.10 $0.60 $0.40
provider food $0.30 $0.20 $0.30
utilities $0.40 $0.10 $0.20
(a) Construct a consumption matrix for the economy and construct also the
corresponding linear equation system.
(b) Suppose that the open sector has a demand for $1930 worth of housing,
$3860 worth of food, and $5790 worth of utilities. Use row reduction to find
a production vector that will meet this demand exactly.
