FEBRUARY IS AFRICAN CANADIAN HERITAGE MONTH
Every February, the Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) joins Canadians nation-wide in
activities that honour the legacy of African Canadians, past and present. It is a time to learn more
about these Canadian stories and the many important contributions African-Canadians have made
to the settlement, growth and development of Ontario and Canada. There are many individuals of
African descent who have left a lasting impact on Canadian society, leading to change and
growth. We see notable African Canadians as some of our greatest heroes - people we continue to
look up to as great leaders and role models.
It was the Honourable Jean Augustine, one of the first black women elected to Canadian
government, who made the official motion declaring February is Black History Month in Canada. It is
thanks to her efforts that we have an entire month dedicated to notable African Canadians. This
month, let us continue to celebrate our Canadian heroes and be reminded that, through
perseverance, we can all achieve great things in our life.

Guidance Corner - February 2024
Secondary School Registration
By now, most students have been placed in their TCDSB Secondary School and high school staff
have prepared or are preparing to send out Registration Packages. It is very important that
students go through the registration package carefully with their parents/guardians. Inside, you
will find information about how to register for courses, about the Summer Transition Course,
uniforms, school cash online, etc. and it will contain forms that must be submitted directly to
the secondary school on their registration night date. If you are unable to attend, please drop
off the forms to the Guidance office at the high school as soon as possible.
To learn more about the course selection process, please click on this Slide Show link and this Video for instructions on how to
complete course selection on myBlueprint. However, I will be providing classroom support starting Feb 1st for students who need
help with picking and submitting courses on myBlueprint.
Since September 2023, as per the Ministry of Education directions on compulsory courses, Grade 9 students will participate in the
following de-streamed courses: English, French, Geography, Math and Science. These courses are no longer offered as Applied or
Academic courses. Locally Developed courses will continue to be available to students as appropriate.
Changed Your Mind?
If you no longer want your child to attend the school in which you currently have a spot, you may request a change of school. Simply
inform the elementary school principal and myself, of your intentions via email or written note and include:
● The name of the school you were accepted in
● The name of the school that you would like to apply to
● One of the 3 choices below
Priority 1 Waitlist
1. Address Change - must have proof and changes must be made through the school secretary. Students will be placed on the
Priority 1 Waitlist.
2. If you want to change schools for any other reason, then you can give up your spot at the current school and go on Priority 1
Waitlist for a different school.
Priority 3 Waitlist
3. Keep your current placement but to be placed on the Priority 3 Waitlist for a different school until May.
Please keep in mind that these are only requests. Having a Change Form submitted on your behalf does not guarantee students a
spot in the new school. Students will be placed on a waitlist and can only be accepted based on the availability of space.
Continued Mental Health Support
In these times, addressing mental health issues is becoming increasingly important and much needed,
especially for developing minds. Please follow this link for more information about signs that could indicate
that your child is struggling.
