ASSIGNMENT 3
Date of submission: 14th May 2015
Late submissions will not be accepted for any reasons.
Q1.
I. Describe the operation of a mechanical interlocking system that can be used for single
busbar system arrangement, consists of isolators, circuit breaker and an earthing
switch
II. The arc interruption in a certain circuit breaker in a power system may be represented
by an oscillation circuit with inductance of 15.5 mH and a capacitance to neutral of
0.02 µF. If the supply voltage to neutral is 14.14 kV(peak) at a frequency of 50 Hz.
Determine;
a) Voltage across the contacts of the circuit breaker when it breaks a short circuit
current at zero value.
b) Frequency of the Re-striking voltage transient
c) Rate of Rise of Re-Striking voltage
Q2.
I. In a test of a three conductor underground cable, the three conductors are first
bunched together and the capacitance between the bunched conductor and sheath is
found to be 0.9 µF. Then two of the conductors are bunched with the sheath and the
capacitance between these and third conductor is found to be 0.4 µF. Determine line
to ground capacitance of this cable.
II. A single core cable of conductor diameter 2 cm and lead sheath of diameter 5.8 cm is
to be used on a 66 kV three phase system. Two inter-sheaths of diameter 3.1 cm and
4.2 cm introduced between core and outer-sheath. If maximum stresses in all sections
are same, calculate the potentials at which the inter-sheaths must be maintained. Use
peak value of the voltage.
Q3.
I. List types of short circuit faults in power system as their frequency of occurrence are
decreases
II. In the single line diagram shown in figure Q3, each generators A and B are rated at
200 MVA, 33 kV and has reactance of 0.95 p.u. and are generating voltage of 1.05 pu.
Transformers are rated at 150 MVA, 33 kV/132 kV and have reactance of 6% each.
The transmission line has a reactance of 10.5 Ω.
a) Convert all quantities to a common base of 300 MVA, and 132 kV on the line and
draw the circuit diagram with values expressed in p.u.
b) If three phase short circuit to ground fault occurs at the quarter distance of one
of the transmission line from BUS 1 as shown in figure Q3, calculate the fault
current in p.u. and its actual value.

I. A generator rated 1000 kVA, 6.9 kV has X”=X2=15% and X0=5%.Its neutral is
grounded through a reactor of 0.381 Ω. The generator is operating at 6.9 kV unloaded
and disconnected from the system when a double line to ground fault develops at the
terminals of lines 2 and 3. find the initial symmetrical rms current through the ground
reactor and in line 2.
II. A single line diagram of a power system is shown in figure Q4. Reactances of the
elements are given to common base values are indicated in the Table Q4. Current
limiting reactor Zn connected between the generator A and earth is j0.315 p.u.
