INTRODUCTION

Flatlock machine, also known

as flat bed sewing machine, is a
simple automatic machine.
They have a vast working
space that permits a wide
range of sewing applications
and is utilized for all types of
flat sewing work. These are
normally used for making
cover-stitches. The elements
used in stitching are needle,
looper and spreader.
PARTS OF FLATLOCK
SEWING MACHINE

The main parts of flatlock

machine are: -
 Thread stands
 Thread guides
 Disc type tensioner
 Pressure feed lever
 Thread take-up lever
 Needle
 Looper
SPECIFICATIONS

 Function: Sewing all type of

knitted cloth or decorative
stitch
 Number of needles: Up to 4
 Needle size: 9, 11, 14, 16, 18,
20 & 21
 Number of threads: 4 to 9
 Type: Flat or cylinder bed
 Stitch Density: 8 to 16 per inch

Thread consumption of this

machine is very high. It is an
expensive machine. Usually,
these are used for knitted
garments but can be used for
woven garments.
FLAT LOCK STITCH

Flat lock stitch is sewn by flat

lock machine. This is a stitch
that can be created in three-
threaded or two-threaded forms
and results in a flat seam. It
consists of four needle threads,
one looper threads and one top
cover thread.
It looks
like overlocking on both sides
of a seam. These are used for
interlocking garments,
hemming the sleeves or
knitwear and also for creative
decorative cover stitches on
garments.
WORKING
MECHANISM

The flatlock sewing machine gets

driven by the electric motor which
is mounted in sewing table. The
motion from the main shaft is
directly connected with the
needle bar mechanism. A link
from main shaft is taken to
spreader mechanism with a cam.
The cam rotation is fixed as half
revolution per every full rotation
of the main shaft. So, that the
spreader movement is controlled.
The knee
presser foot lifter mechanism is
also connected to presser foot bar
in the top side. By a ‘V’ belt, the
drive is transferred to the bottom
of the machine and the bottom
shaft is directly connected to the
feeding mechanism. The bottom
shaft also controls the movement
of the bottom looper. A cam
attached with the bottom acts as
a tensioner device which controls
the sewing thread supply to the
bottom looper.
CONCLUSION

Flatlock sewing machine cannot

be used for normal purpose.
But for making a complete
garment their importance
cannot be denied. Special care
and sufficient knowledge are
necessary for proper working.
Otherwise, faulty sewing may
be done.
