This learning material is designed to guide you in learning at your own pace.

At the end part of this module is a Learner’s Diary. Use this diary to record
important dates, jobs undertaken and other workplace events that may provide
further details to your trainer or assessor. A Record of Achievement will be
provided to you by your trainer for you to accomplish once you complete the
module. Upon completion of this module, study the evidence plan at the end of
the last learning element of this module then ask your instructor to assess you.
You will be given a certificate of completion as proof that you met the standard
requirements (knowledge, skills and attitude) for this module. The assessment
could be made in different methods, as prescribed in the competency standards.

Module Description:

This module covers the knowledge, skills and attitudes required in performing basic
bench work.

Nominal Duration: 40 hours

Summary of Learning outcome:

Upon completion of the module, the trainees/students should be able to:

LO 3. Perform grinding, cutting, filing and basic welding

Assessment Criteria:

1. Supplies, materials, tools, and equipment are identified according to job


requirements

TECHNICAL TERMS
1) Air Cooled Condensing Unit (ACCU)/OUTDOOR UNIT – an equipment
that condenses refrigerant vapor using air as the condensing medium. It
consist of compressor, condenser coil and fan motor

2) Air Cooled Condenser – an equipment that condenses refrigerant vapor


using air as the condensing medium

3) Air Handling Unit (AHU)/INDOOR UNIT – an air-conditioning component


that consists of a fan motor and an evaporator coil. It is this equipment used

Guidelines for using basic hand tools safely:

a. The primary rule for safety is using any tool for its purpose only.

b. Use screwdrivers that have undamaged tips. Discard screwdrivers with


worn tips because they can damage both slot and Phillips-head screws.

c. Use a hammer when you need to hammer, but do not hammer on a


screwdriver.
d. When prying downward with a pry bar, place both hands flat above the bar
so that if the bar slips, you will not smash a hand on the floor or a piece of
equipment.

e. Do not hammer with wrenches. Be sure to turn adjustable wrenches in the


desired direction foe the stationary part of the wrench on the side from
which force is exerted.

f. Do not use pliers in place of a wrench. In air conditioning work, use pliers
with insulated handles.

g. Keep hammer handles tight and use the proper hammer for the job.

h. Keep points and heads on punches and chisels in good shape. Grind chisel
heads to keep them from mushrooming.

i. Keep files in a wall rack because if they are kept loose in a drawer, they
will become dull.

Rules for using power equipment safely

 Always follow manufacturer’s operating instruction.


 Wear gloves when working with equipment.
 Never exceed rated capacity of equipment.
 Never remove protective guards from equipment.
 Be prepared for the unexpected.
 Never use equipment on wet location.
 Never leave equipment unattended while turned on.

CHECKING THE CONDITIONS OF TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT

Learning Objectives: After reading this information sheet, the trainee


will be able to identify the types of measuring instruments
.

Below are recommended practice to identify defective and non-defective hand


tools.

1. Through visual inspection:

Defective tools can easily be separated from functional one through visual
inspection. The appearance of tools will describe such characteristics like
dullness, sharpness, dismantled parts, and unevenness of the teeth of the
cutting tools.

2. Functionality:

One way is to check the quality of the manufactured tools. Is it already


susceptible to wear and tear, is it already exceeded its service life. Is it made
with quality and passed the manufacturer’s quality control test.

3. Performance:

Performance of hand tools is determined after the actual use has been tested
and evaluated, and the outcomes will be the basis if the hand tools are still
worth for work.

4. Service span:

Hand tools are issued to the shop teacher at one time. However, this must be
recorded to determine when it was received and how long were the tools kept
in the shop. A hand tool that’s too old is unsafe for the students and workers.

Procedures:

1. Marks the metal to be processed with holes.


2. Plug the unit to the AC power source.
3. Put on gloves and protective eye glasses.
4. Turn on the switch then direct it through the marked spot.
5. Fix bore holes on the metal according to the specified application.
6. Turn off the unit when finished
7. Clean the unit and the work place.
