Date: October 25, 2024

Venue: DOrSU Gym

Prepared by: Cherry Canete

I. Introduction

The Basic Fire Fighting Seminar gave us essential knowledge about fire safety,
introducing important concepts like the fire triangle and fire tetrahedron, which
explain the elements needed for a fire to ignite and sustain. We also learned about
different types of heat transfer, the various classes of fire, and how to handle each
type effectively. The seminar covered the basics of firefighting, including the different
phases of a firefighting operation, techniques used, and the parts of a fire
extinguisher along with its proper use. Additionally, we explored common fire
sources. This practical information equips us to handle fire incidents in everyday
situations, whether at home, school, or within our communities.

Summary: The speaker also elaborated on the organizational structure of the

Bureau of Fire Protection (BFB) and its importance as a separate agency.
They explained how fire is formed and how heat can transfer between
materials, emphasizing the science behind fire behavior. Additionally, the
speaker discussed the different fire classes—Class A, B, C, and K—and the
specific methods required to combat each type of fire. This helped us
understand how to appropriately respond to different fire incidents.

1. Speaker 2: Fire officer ll John khen Bandigan – Basic Firefighting

Topic: Fire Fighting, Basic Principle, Phases of Firefighting and Firefighting
Techniques.
Summary: In basic firefighting there were two, firs is the fire control and
second is fire suppression. In firefighting there was a principle that need to
keep in mind, “Human life shall take precedence over all other concern”
because life is the most important thing above all. Then the speaker explained
the phases of firefighting; Pre Fire Planning, Size Up, Rescue, Cover
Exposure, Confinement, Ventilation, Extinguishment, Salvage, Overhaul and
Post Fire Analysis. The speaker also includes the different techniques in
firefighting namely direct attack, indirect attack and combination attack. Inline
with this, it composed of different tactical mode; the offensive mode and
defensive mode.

2. Speaker 3: [Link] officer l Ian Emmanuel Cablinda - Extinguisher

Topic: Parts of Extinguisher, Operating Extinguisher and what to do during
fire.
Summary: The speaker teaches us the basic parts of fire extinguisher and
how to operate it. Just remember the TPASS, Then he told us what are the
things that we need to do in times of fire incident.

3. Speaker 4: [Link] officer 1 Chad William Malooy - Source of Fire

Topic: Most Common Sources of Fire
Summary: The speaker taught us what are the most common sources of fire.
According to him, some were started in the kitchen, appliances, outlets,
furniture. Some were due to accidental causes, ignition and firecrackers.

III. Seminar Proceedings

A. Registration and Opening Ceremony

The registration process was good, however there was a sudden change of
venue due to some abrupt activity of FTED that why we change our venue from A
building to DOrSU gym which resulted to shorter time discussion. Before we start, it
was started with a prayer, singing of national anthem and welcoming of speakers by
Beryl.

B. Main Sessions

The Basic Fire Fighting Seminar provided essential information on fire safety and
prevention. Senior Fire Officer II explained that the seminar was not only about
firefighting techniques but also about educating participants on how to prevent fires.
He shared the history of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), which was established
by RA 6975 to separate the fire department from the Philippine Constabulary and
focus on specific tasks. Before this law, firefighters were armed, but now they are
prohibited from carrying firearms, as firefighting is seen as a duty and calling, not a
means to gain wealth. The officer introduced the fire triangle, which consists of heat,
fuel, and oxygen, explaining that fire cannot exist without all three elements. He
shared examples of fuel sources, such as friction, solar heat, and electrical sources,
which can ignite fire. He also emphasized the danger of Calboro when exposed to
water, as it can cause ignition.

The speaker went on to explain heat transfer methods: conduction, convection, and
radiation, highlighting how these methods play a role in spreading fire. He then
discussed the Classes of Fire:

 Class A: Combustible materials like wood and paper

 Class B: Liquids such as gasoline
 Class C: Electrical appliances
 Class D: Combustible metals
 Class K: Kitchen fires

Fire Officer II John Khen Bandigan discussed the phases of firefighting, including
Pre-Fire Planning, Size Up, Rescue, Cover Exposure, Confinement, Ventilation,
Extinguishment, Salvage, Overhaul, and Post-Fire Analysis. He explained different
ventilation techniques, such as Natural Ventilation (using windows or doors),
Mechanical Ventilation (using machinery), and Vertical Ventilation (creating a hole in
the roof). He also taught firefighting techniques: Direct Attack, Indirect Attack, and
Combination Attack. The Offensive Mode is used when firefighters can control the
fire from within, while the Defensive Mode is used for hazardous situations, such as
when the building contains dangerous materials.

Fire Officer I Ian Emmanuel Cablinda taught participants how to properly operate a
fire extinguisher using the acronym TPAS: Twist, Pull, Aim, and Squeeze. He
stressed the importance of aiming the nozzle at the fuel source, not the flames. He
also introduced the SAFETY acronym, which stands for Sound the alarm, Advise the
fire department, Fight the fire if safe, Evacuate, Tell others, and You get clear.

Finally, Fire Officer I Chad William Malooy shared the most common sources of fire,
including LPG leaks, unattended kerosene lamps, malfunctioning or overheating
appliances, improper mosquito coils, overloaded outlets, combustible furniture,

accidental causes, bottles with gas, matches, lighters, and exploding firecrackers.
This seminar equipped participants with practical skills and knowledge to prevent
and manage fire incidents, helping to ensure the safety of their homes, schools, and
communities.

C. Panel Discussions and Q&A Sessions

At the end of the seminar, all officers were able to answer all the questions
being asked related on the topic. It just shows that there are really efficient and
knowledgeable about firefighting.

D. Workshops or Breakout Sessions

During the seminar, we played a funny game related to firefighting, then last
october 26, 2024 we conducted a real life basic firefighting where the knowledge we
gained from seminar was used during the activity.

IV. Key Takeaways

In the case of a kitchen fire, do not use water to extinguish the flames. Using
water can cause severe damage as it may cause the hot oil to splatter when it
evaporates, leading to burns and injuries. Instead, use more oil to help lower the
temperature of the burning oil, or cover the fire with a wet cloth to cut off the oxygen
supply, which will help extinguish the flames safely. These methods are more
effective in controlling a kitchen fire without making the situation worse.

V. Feedback and Evaluation

The seminar was well conducted because of the presence of the fire officers
in sharing their experience and knowledge in firefighting. We learned a lot about
basic firefighting and gets the importance of being aware about fire safety.

VI. Conclusion

In conclusion, the seminar on basic firefighting provided essential knowledge and

practical skills for handling fire-related incidents. It emphasized the importance of
understanding fire prevention, recognizing the different types of fire, and knowing the
correct techniques for extinguishing flames safely. The seminar highlighted key
principles such as prioritizing human life and ensuring safety first, and it equipped
attendees with vital information about fire control, suppression, and the proper use of
firefighting equipment. Most importantly, it taught us that quick and informed actions,
such as avoiding water for kitchen fires and using oil or wet cloths instead, can
significantly reduce risks and prevent further damage. This training ensures that we
