TASK 1A

OUTLINE FIVE DETERMINANTS OF RURAL DEVELOPMENT

1. Economic Resources and Infrastructure

2. Education and Skills Development

3. Agricultural Productivity and Sustainability

4. Social and Community Organization

5. Access to Health Services

TASK 1B

As the Coordinator of a Natural Resource Management project in Kajiado County, explain how
you would ensure that EACH of the outlined determinants promotes the sustainability of that
project

1. Economic Resources and Infrastructure

- Sustainable Investment: One of the first things we’ll focus on is attracting investments that
genuinely benefit our community. This means reaching out to organizations and businesses that
value sustainability. Imagine local entrepreneurs teaming up with these investors to create jobs
that protect our environment, such as eco-friendly farming or tourism ventures. We want to build
an economy that supports our families while taking care of our land.

- Building Better Infrastructure: Picture a community where reliable roads connect our farms
to markets, where families have easy access to clean water, and where everyone can
communicate effectively. We’ll prioritize infrastructure that not only meets our immediate needs
but also enhances our capacity to manage our resources wisely. This could mean working with
local authorities to improve transport networks or establishing renewable energy sources to
power our homes and businesses.
2. Education and Skills Development

- Training Programs: Education is at the heart of sustainability. We will organize hands-on

training sessions that focus on sustainable agricultural practices and resource management. These
workshops will not just be lectures; they’ll involve practical activities, allowing you to learn by
doing. We’ll tap into the knowledge of our elders, integrating traditional practices with modern
techniques, so that everyone benefits from a rich blend of wisdom.

- Community Awareness: We’ll hold community gatherings where we can share ideas and
celebrate our local culture. Through storytelling, demonstrations, and interactive activities, we
can learn together about the importance of sustainable practices—how they help us, our families,
and the environment. This shared knowledge will empower us all to make informed decisions
that protect our resources.

3. Agricultural Productivity and Sustainability

- Promoting Sustainable Practices: Our project will actively promote farming techniques that
are good for our land and our future. Imagine using methods like crop rotation, agroforestry, and
water conservation to improve soil health and increase yields. We’ll work with local farmers to
share best practices and create a support network where we can learn from each other’s successes
and challenges.

- Encouraging Diversification: We’ll explore opportunities beyond traditional farming. By

diversifying into areas like ecotourism, handicrafts, or sustainable fishing, we can create multiple
income streams that help our families thrive, even in challenging times. We’ll provide support to
help you identify and develop these new ventures, ensuring that our community becomes more
resilient to economic fluctuations.
4. Social and Community Organization

- Community Engagement: Your voice matters, and we want to hear it! We’ll establish local
committees where community members can actively participate in decision-making. This means
that everyone from youth to elders will have the opportunity to contribute their ideas and shape
the future of our project. When we come together to share our visions, we create a stronger, more
united community.

- Empowerment Initiatives: We’ll focus on uplifting marginalized groups, particularly women

and youth. Empowering them to take leadership roles in resource management not only benefits
them but enriches our entire community. We’ll provide training and support to help them
develop their skills and take charge of initiatives that matter to them.

5. Access to Health Services

- Integrated Health Programs: A healthy community is essential for sustainable development.

We’ll work closely with local health services to ensure that our project includes initiatives that
address environmental health. This means improving access to clean water, sanitation, and
nutrition. Together, we can create a healthier environment that supports both our physical and
mental well-being.

- Health Education: We’ll organize workshops that link health and sustainability, teaching our
community about the benefits of a balanced diet and hygiene practices that respect our
environment. For example, we’ll explore how sustainable farming can provide nutritious food
and how protecting our natural resources can lead to better health outcomes for all.

Monitoring and Evaluation

- Feedback Mechanisms: Your insights are invaluable to us! We’ll set up simple and accessible
ways for you to share your thoughts and experiences as the project progresses. This could be
through regular community meetings, suggestion boxes, or informal discussions. Your feedback
will help us understand what’s working and what needs improvement.

- Data Collection: By gathering data on our resource use and community health, we can make
informed decisions that guide our actions. We’ll keep everyone informed about our progress and
share stories of success to inspire and motivate one another.
