WHAT IS BIRTH CONTROL & HOW

CONTRACEPTION PREVENTS
PREGNANCY?

What is birth control?

Birth control or contraception refers to methods used to prevent pregnancy. These methods work
by stopping sperm from fertilizing an egg or by preventing the release of eggs from the ovaries.
Common methods include condoms, birth control pills, intrauterine devices (IUDS), and
hormonal implants. Contraception allows individuals to plan if and when they want to have
children, and it also helps in managing reproductive health.

How does contraception prevent Pregnancy?

Contraception prevents pregnancy by disrupting the process of fertilization, where sperm meets
an egg. Different types of contraception work in various ways by stopping fertilization or
preventing implantation, contraception ensures pregnancy doesn’t happen.
METHODS
OF BIRTH
CONTROL

NATURAL
METHODS
These rely on monitoring the body's natural fertility
signals to avoid pregnancy.

 Fertility Awareness: Involves tracking the

menstrual cycle to avoid sex during the most fertile
days. This can be done by monitoring body
temperature, cervical mucus, or using a calendar
method.

 Withdrawal (Pull-Out Method): The male

partner withdraws the penis from the vagina before
ejaculation to prevent sperm from entering.

 Abstinence: Choosing not to engage in sexual

activity to avoid pregnancy.

BARRIER METHODS
These physically block sperm from reaching the egg.

 Condoms (Male and Female): Thin sheaths

worn during sex. Male condoms go over the penis,
while female condoms are inserted into the vagina.
Both prevent sperm from entering the uterus.

 Diaphragm: A dome-shaped device inserted into

the vagina before intercourse, covering the cervix to
block sperm.

 Cervical Cap: Similar to a diaphragm, but

smaller, it fits tightly over the cervix to prevent sperm
from entering the uterus.

 Spermicides: Chemicals (gels, foams, etc.) that

kill sperm, often used with other barrier methods like
diaphragms or condoms.
HORMONAL
METHODS
These methods use hormones to regulate or stop
ovulation and make it difficult for sperm to reach an
egg.

 Birth Control Pills: Oral contraceptives taken

daily, containing hormones (estrogen and progestin)
to prevent the release of an egg.
 Birth Control Patch: A small patch worn on the
skin that releases hormones into the body to prevent
ovulation.
 Vaginal Ring: A flexible ring inserted into the
vagina, releasing hormones to prevent ovulation.
 Birth Control Injection (Depo-Provera): A shot
of hormones given every three months that prevents
the ovaries from releasing eggs.
 Intrauterine Device (IUD): A small, T-shaped
device inserted into the uterus. Hormonal IUDs
release progestin, which thickens cervical mucus and
prevents sperm from reaching the egg.

SURGICAL
METHODS
These are permanent methods of contraception.

 Tubal ligation: A surgical procedure where a

woman’s fallopian tubes are cut, tied, or sealed to
prevent eggs from reaching the uterus for
fertilization.

 Vasectomy: A surgical procedure for men in

which the vas deferens (tubes that carry sperm from
the testicles) are cut or sealed, preventing sperm from
being ejaculated
UNDERSTAN
DING
OVERPOPUL
ATION

What is
overpopulation?
Overpopulation occurs when the number of people in a given area exceeds the capacity of the
environment to support them with necessary resources such as food, water, and shelter. This
means that the population grows so large that the available resources become insufficient to meet
everyone’s needs. Overpopulation can result in negative effects such as increased pollution,
deforestation, and depletion of natural resources, as well as social challenges like unemployment,
poverty, and poor living conditions.

METHODS TO
REDUCE
OVERPOPULATION
Family Planning
Family planning involves providing individuals and couples with the information and
resources they need to make informed decisions about childbearing.
 Access to contraceptives: ensuring that people have access to various forms of birth
control (such as pills, condoms, and IUDS) allows them to prevent unintended
pregnancies.
 Education on Reproductive Health: Teaching about the reproductive system, fertility
awareness, and contraceptive methods empowers individuals to make informed choices.

Government Policies
Governments can enact policies that promote sustainable population growth.
 Incentives for Smaller Families: Offering financial incentives, such as tax breaks or cash
bonuses, to families that choose to have fewer children.
 Population Control Programs: Implementing programs that promote family planning
and provide access to contraceptive services.
