MATH 4 – Assignment 4

HYPOTHESIS TESTING

Name:____________________________________________________ Score:___________/15

Section_______________ Date:______________

Instructions: In an A4 paper, copy (handwritten) and solve the following word problem using the appropriate
statistical tests with the indicated steps as guide. For the Z-test value (step 3), round off to 2 decimal places,
while for the T-test value (step 5), round off to 3 decimal places.

PROBLEM #1: (7points)

According to a 2011 survey, Filipinos spent an average amount of P150,000 annually on housing with P9,000
standard deviation. A suburban community claims that their residents did not spend P150,000. The community
used 48 residents, where they found that theses residents spent an annual average of P155,500. Is there
sufficient evidence to support the claim at 0.05 level of significance?
[1] State the (H0) and alternative (H1) hypothesis.
[2] Choose the level of significance (α)
[3] Determine the test statistic and compute the test value (z)

[4] Determine the p-value and then graph.

[5] Make a statistical decision (Reject or Accept/Fail to reject) and state the conclusion (Is the claim
TRUE or FALSE?).

PROBLEM #2: (8 points)

A company wants to test the claim that their batteries last more than 40 hours. Using a simple random sample
of 15 batteries yielded a mean of 44.9 hours, with a standard deviation of 8.9 hours. Test this claim using a
significance level of 0.05.
[1] Define the null (H0) and alternative (H1) hypothesis.
[2] State the level of significance (α)
[3] Calculate the degrees of freedom (df)
[4] State decision rule and graph
[5] Calculate test statistic (t)

[6] Make a statistical decision (Reject or Accept/Fail to reject) and state the conclusion (Is the claim
TRUE or FALSE?).
