Operational Definitions Worksheet
1. Intelligence
a. In studying intelligence among high school students in New Jersey, specifically in Bergen
County, intelligence is measured by a student’s performance on an IQ test. The students
that have an IQ of above 110 are considered intelligent.
b. In studying intelligence among high school students, specifically in Bergen County
Academies, intelligence is measured by a student’s GPA. If a student’s GPA is higher
than or equal to 3.0, the student will be defined as intelligent.
2. Attractiveness
a. In studying attractiveness among high schoolers in Bergen County, specifically in Bergen
County Academies, the amount of compliments a person receives about their external
appearance will be measured within one week. Receiving more compliments will indicate
higher attractiveness.
b. In studying attractiveness among adults above 18 years old, specifically in Hackensack,
New Jersey, the number of people an adult has dated will be counted. If an adult has
dated more than 5 people, she is considered attractive.
3. Motivation
a. In studying motivation among high school students, specifically in Bergen County
academies, motivation will be defined by how many assignments a student completes on
time. Completing 100% of the given assignments within the 2 days after they were
assigned shows “high motivation.”
b. In studying motivation among high school students, specifically in Bergen County
Academies, the amount of extracurricular activities students participated in will be
counted. If a student participates in more than 5 extracurricular activities, they are
considered motivated.
4. Attention
a. In studying, attention during class time among high school students, specifically in
Bergen County Academies, is measured by the number of times a student engages in
using a phone during class time. If a student engages in getting caught using their phone
more than twice in a class, they will be categorized as paying “low attention” during class
time.
b. In studying the attention given to Ms. Pagano during AP Psychology among high school
students, specifically in Bergen County Academies, the length of notes students take will
be noted. If a student gives to their teachers more than 3 pages of notes every week, this
shows paying heightened attention.
5. Aggression
a. In studying aggression among high school students, specifically in Bergen County
Academies, the number of times a student uses profane language indicates the student’s
aggressiveness. If a student uses profane language more than five times within a school
day, they will be shown as “highly aggressive.”
b. In studying aggression among high school students, specifically in Bergen County
Academies, the number of times a student violently puts their hands on someone else will
be counted. If a student violently touches another student more than once a week, the
student is categorized as “highly aggressive.”
6. Success
a. In studying success among adults, specifically adults in New Jersey, success will be
measured by the annual income of the individual. An earning of more than $100,000 will
be classified as “highly successful.”
b. In studying success among high school students, specifically in Bergen County
Academies, students’s selected universities will be monitored. If a student goes to an Ivy
League university, they are considered “highly successful.”
7. Athleticism
a. In studying athleticism among high school students, specifically in Bergen County
Academies, athleticism will be measured by how fast a student can run a mile.
Completing a mile in under 10 minutes will show “high athleticism.”
b. In studying athletics among adults, specifically in Bergen County, an adult’s time spent at
the gym is monitored. If an adult spends more than 5 hours a week, they will be
categorized as “athletic.
