Question 3 (20pts)
Determine the number of lanes required for a freeway section 0.35-mi long and a 2.5% grade, if
the section is to operate at LOS C. The following design features apply to this section:
Ÿ V = 3,500 veh/h (weekday commuter traffic)
Ÿ PHF = 0.95
Ÿ Terrain = level
Ÿ Trucks and Buses = 10% (1 Truck/Bus = 1.5 PCE)
Ÿ RVs = 2% (1 RV = 1.2 PCE)
Ÿ Free Flow Speed (FFS) = 75 mi/h
Ÿ Lane width = 12 ft
Ÿ Lateral obstruction = none within 6 ft
Ÿ Interchange spacing = no interchanges within the section
Ÿ For FFS= 75 mph, the maximum service flow rates (pc/h/lane) for level of service (A)
through (E) are 820, 1310, 1750, 2110 and 2400, respectively.
※ Use all the tables and equations that we referenced in our classes.

Solution

Since section length =0.35 (< 0.5 mi) and G= 2.5% (< 3%), hence it can be analysed as an
Extended freeway segment. (Extended freeway segment: no one grade of 3% or greater is
longer than 0.25 mi or no one grade of less than 3% is longer than 0.5 mi.)

Ideal conditions exist (LW, LC and TRD), hence FFS = 75 mph (given)

Then, for LOS C, Maximum Service Flow Rate =1,750 pc/h/lane (given):

N = 2.22 lanes, use 3 lanes per direction (6-lane freeway segment)

Question 4 (20pts)
You are asked to design the pedestrian walkway between Gunsan Station and In-Wang-Temple, of
a length of 5.3 km. It is expected that 20% of total pilgrims will walk between these two places
during the 2-hour peak period of Buddha’s Birthday. The total number of pilgrims is expected to
reach 5 million in the design year. Since this walkway is used for only less than one day during
the year, you are expected to design it to operate at maximum flow rate possible during peak
hours. Using the HCM table shown below, determine:

a) The required width of the walkway.

You should design it at LOS E (i.e. at capacity), with q = 75 ped/min/m

Pedestrian PHV = (0.2 * 5 x 106)/(2*60)=16,667/2=8,333.33ped/min
Walkway width = PHV / Capacity = = 8,333.33 / 75 = 111.11; say 112 meters

b) The prevailing pedestrian density.

K = 1 / Space = 1 / 0.75 = 1.33 ped / m2

c) The average walking time from Gunsan Station to In-Wang-Temple

Space mean speed = q / k = 75 / 1.33 = 56.25 m/min = 3.375 km/hr

Average travel time = 6.75 km / 3.375 kph = 2 hr

Given: HCM Level of Service for pedestrian flow (walkways)

LOS q (ped/min/m) Space (m2/ped)
A ≤ 16 ≥ 5.6
B 16 - ≤ 23 3.7 - < 5.6
C 23 - ≤ 33 2.2 - < 3.7
D 33 - ≤ 49 1.4 - < 2.2
E 49 - ≤ 75 0.75 - < 1.4
F variable < 0.75

Question 5 (20pts)
Answer the following questions by referring to the intersection diagram and the data given below:

Phase Design
-S(TH+RT) = 1700 veh/h/ln
-S(LT) = 1400 veh/h/ln
-No LT is allowed for EB and WB traffic
-No pedestrian crossing is allowed during LT
signal

For all phases

-Amber(yellow): 3 sec, AR: 1 sec
-Lost time (l1+l2):4sec

Lane widths
-EB/WB: 3.6 m/ln
-NB/SB: 3 m/ln

Phase Design
-Phase 1: NB LT + SB LT
-Phase 2: NB Thru & RT + SB Thru & RT
-Phase 3: EB Thru & RT + WB Thru & RT

a) Estimate the optimal cycle length.

Flow ratio from critical movements (CS): 0.716

Phase 1: 200/1400 = 0.143
Phase 2: 600/1700 = 0.353
Phase 3: 375/1700 = 0.221
L = 4*3 = 12 sec
Optimal C = (1.5L+5)/(1-CS) = 81.096 sec →82 sec

b) Determine Green intervals per each phase considering pedestrian crossings.

Ped Green
Phase 1: No Ped Xing
Phase 2: 7+ (2*3.6)/1.2 – 4 = 9
Phase 3: 7+ (3*3.0)/1.2 – 4 = 10.5
