Preface

There are many books on this subject but most of

these only deal with certain aspects of the subject,
not its all aspects at one place. As a practising
astrologer I have often found it very difficult to refer
to different books to get the desired information.
Moreover, while referring to many book^.
simultaneously, one may lose one's concentration and
may miss one point or the other. So, I thought it best
to attempt a book wherein all the required information
on the subject could be provided in a single volume.

The aim of the book is to put in a concise form

all the essential astrological principles related to
marriage matching so that the readers can easily get
all the information at one place. In the course of
writing this book, several publications were referred
to, and I have endeavoured to present in this book
essential principles culled out from standard works.
Wherever differences surfaced I have put forth my
own views, the justification being my humble
experience in this line. The reader is at liberty to take
them or reject them.

The aim of astrology is to dispel the fear of the

unknown and to give scope for the free play of the
human spirit. This treatise is not complete by any
means. The subject is vast, yet I have gathered
information from many acknowledged sources. I am
sure this information will be of great use to the
modern man. With the help of this book, he would
be able to exercise his own judgement instead of
wholly depending on the astrological consultant.
The author is highly grateful to M/s. Pustak Mahal,
New Delhi, who have shown keen interest in
publishing this book. I am sure both professionals
and non-professionals would benefit from the effort.

Introduction

There goes an old proverb, "marriages are made

in heaven". This means a marriage has divine approval
and blessings. But still one needs to look for the right
mate. Then only can one find the true life partner.
Male and female are but two aspects or two sides of
Nature. Hence it is natural for them to be united.
Otherwise there would be incompleteness. However,
marriage is but a gross reflection of the grand spiritual
union. In our country, marriage has been considered
as a relationship which will last till eternity. It confers
equality on both the partners in matters of Dharma
(right conduct), Artha (financial position), Kama
(sex reaction) and Moksha (liberation or
emancipation). The ancients have, therefore, called
the wife a housewife, a minister, a friend and a servant.
She is also the goddess of the house encouraging her
husband to earn wealth, name and fame. She stands
by him in times of crisis.

Anxiety in regard to marriage is all the greater as

the selection is made only once in a life time. Marriage
is not an invitation for brute sense-gratification. Nor
it is a civil agreement that affects only the partners.
It is in fact the basis of the family, therefore its
dissolution as well as formation is a matter of social
interest. It is the mould out of which the future
generations emerge.
The sexual aspect is an important element in the
life of an individual, and it has a significant bearing
9
on one's psychological and emotional development
It has been planted so deeply in human nature that
no normal person can escape its influence.

We must now examine how far can astrology help

people understand the nature of sex, sexual
relationships and the behaviour patterns regulating
our sexual desires. Those who are successful in sexual
adjustment can by and large lead a happy life, as the
mutual affection between the married couple is
broadened through the adjustment. Hence, ancient
Rishis attached great significance to astrological
considerations before solemnising a marriage.

Physiological, psychological or other defects of

the reproductive system can be detected by studying
the individual birth charts (horoscopes). Life itself
can become heaven or hell depending upon the state
of one's married life. Marriage is not based on any
sentiment, but has religious, moral, social and
scientific basis. Even though every one knows that
man's destiny is preordained by the Lord Almighty,
still people consult astrologers to find out about the
prospective bride or bridegroom, the time of marriage
and the state of married life.

The Hindu Sastras, keeping in view the climate

and ethnological conditions in India, have fixed the
maximum and minimum ages for marriage. In earlier
times, a girl was thought to be of marriageable age
when she satisfied the dictum 'Astavarshat bhavet
Kanya' i.e. by the 8th year. But today this concept
has totally changed and under the present conditions,
the minimum marriageable age for a girl is fixed at
18 years and for a boy at 21 years. This is because
the reproductive organs are well developed by this
time, and the couple can hope to have a healthy
progeny. Marriages between people belonging to the

10
same gotra are not favoured perhaps because of the
pernicious influence it may have on the offsprings.
Inter-racial, inter-communal and inter-religious
marriages have not been favoured because of cultural
differences in such unions.
Eight types of marriages have been mentioned in
Manusmriti. These are : Daiva, Brahma, Arisha,
Prajapatiya, Asura, Gandharva, Rakshasa and
Pisacha. The marriage that takes place in the normal
course is called Prajapatiya. The role of astrology in
finding out a suitable boy or girl for a happy marriage
is quite important. The responsibility of the astrologer
in this regard is greater and more taxing than that of
parents and other relatives. Therefore, the astrologer
should offer his frank opinion without any reservation.

11
PART-I
1. The Role of Astrologer

Before embarking on matching of horoscopes,

the main task before an astrologer is to first satisfy
himself that he has got correct astrological charts
based on the correct date, time and place of birth.
Once he has got these, he should ascertain whether
the charts have been correctly cast with a standard
ephemeris. Sometimes the computer created charts
do contain some errors. Sometimes charts are
manipulated by both the parties to avoid possible
afflictions.

It is also found that when the birth takes place

after 12'o clock in the night, the date of birth is
recorded as the next day following the British method.
But in the Indian System the reckoning of the day is
from Sunrise to Sunrise. This creates lot of problems
and the chart so framed could be wrong. So, it is
better to ascertain the correctness of the horoscopes
of the bride and the groom after getting the data
verified with a standard ephemeris and then proceed.
Sometimes the nakshatras, i.e. constellations, are
given deliberately wrong in order to avoid the dosham
attached to it. Only after ascertaining the above, the
astrologer should proceed to matching of the
horoscopes.

The most important points to be considered first

are :

1. The suitability of the stars, i.e. constellations

2. The positions of Lagna and rasis in both
3. The longevity of the bride and the bridegroom

14
4. The larger strength of the 7th and 8th houses
5. The strength of the putra-bhava
But in my opinion, the strength of the 2nd, 4th,
6th, 9th and 12th houses is also to be seen as these
too have a bearing on happy married life. 2nd house
represents kutumba-sthana, i.e. family vision and
financial stability, 4th house represents general
happiness and relation with in-laws, 6th rogasthana,
i.e. health, 9th bhagyasthana and the 12th bed-
comforts.
I have found from my experience that there is
difference in birth times for those bom in maternity
homes, government hospitals etc. and this has to be
carefully checked out as the Lagna and the 10th house
do not match. In such cases the astrologers should
apply the time correction suitably in the charts so
that the correctness of the Moon and Lagna can be
ascertained, or else there will be differences in dasas
and antardasas and also the strength of the Lagna.
In Caesarean operation births also, one has to be
quite sure about the timing. Nowadays the Caesarean
operations are becoming the order of the day. Some
people resort to these births to have the birth of their
progeny under an auspicious constellation. Thus the
casting of horoscope has to be dope very carefully,
and this can be done only by an experienced
astrologer.
First, ascertain all this and get a correct chart.
And, only after considering the respective strengths
of the above houses, can one start the consideration
of the Dasa-vidha porutams or kutas. Some
astrologers just consider this and give their opinions.
This is not a correct approach. Only after considering
the above points should the porutams be taken up to
get the overall picture. So it is advised that the parents
consult an experienced astrologer and not any Tom,
15
Dick and Harry who pose as astrologers as the
marriages recommended by them may just not take
off or end in failure.

Kinds of Agreements

According to astrology, there are as many as 40

porutams or agreements, out of which 12 porutams
or kutas are to be considered in order to judge the
suitability of the proposed matrimonial alliance, and
out of these eight are supremely important. They are
(1) Dina, (2) Gana, (3) Mahendra, (4) Stree-dirgha, (5)
Yoni, (6) Rasi, (7) Rasyadhipa, (8) Vasya, (9) Rajju,
(10) Vedha, (11) Varna, and (12) Nadi.
The first and foremost factor is to see the
nakshatras, i.e. constellations, of the bride and the
bridegroom, whether they match or not. For this,
one has to count the star of the boy from that of
the girl. And, if after dividing it by 9, the remainder
comes as 1, 3, 5 and 7, which are treated as Janma
tara, Vipat tara, Praytytak tara and Naidhan tara,
the proposal should be rejected outright. However,
the remainders 0, 2, 4, 6, 8 and 9 are considered
good. When any of these remainders is found, one
can proceed to the other aspects of Lagnas and rasis
(where Moon is placed) which should not become
shastaka-dwirdwadasam. Then, after this, proceed
to analyse the charts for other aspects like character,
kutumba, speech, longevity, kalatrasthana and
particularly mangalyasthana (in case of girls).
After satisfying all these, one has to go to the
Dasavidha porutams or kutas, and finally give
opinion.
Verification of Nakshatras
It is a well-known fact that the position of Moon
in the natal charts determines the nakshatras and
16
Xhc.iTpadas, i.e. quarters. There are 27 nakshatras and
they are given below:

Janma Anujanma Trijanma

1st Paraya II Paraya III Paraya

1. Aswani 10. Makha 19. Moola

2. Bharani 11. Pubba 20. Poorvashada
3. Krittika (Poorva Phalguni) 21. Uttarashada
4. Rohini 12. Uttara 22. Sravanam
5. Mrigasira (Uttara Phalguni) 23- Dhanista
6. Aridra 13- Hastha 24. Satabhisham
7. Punarvasu 14. Chitta 25. Poorvabhadra
8. Pushy ami 15. Swathi 26. Uttarabhadra
9. Aslesha 16. Visakha 21. Revathi
17. Anuradha
18. Jyesta

The first nine stars are grouped under Janma, the

next nine under Anujanma and the last nine under
Trijanma stars. The first group is called 1st Par ay a,
the next group Ilnd Paraya and the last group Illrd
Paraya. This has to be reckoned from the birth-star
and followed accordingly. Astrologically, the evil is
more in the 1st paraya and considered bad, in the Ilnd
paraya it is 50 per cent and almost nil in the Illrd
paraya. In the 2nd paraya, the evil is centred only in
the 1st quarter of the 3rd (Vipat), 4th quarter of the
5th (Paraytyak) and 3rd quarter of the 7th (Naidhana).
In the 3rd paraya, the evil is negligible in Janma, Vipat
etc. However, it is advised to avoid Vipat, Praytytak
and Naidhan stars for all important undertakings like
marriage, starting of important events, etc.

According to some classical writers, the 22nd and

the 27th stars are always inauspicious. But, on
experience, it is noted that 22nd is always Sadhana
and the 27th Paramamitra and hence could be
considered as auspicious. The strengths of the
constellations are indicated below. If the remainder is:

17
1. Janma (indicates danger to body) 2. Sampat
(wealth and property) 3. Vipat (danger, losses,
accidents) 4. Kshema (prosperity) 3. Praytyak
(obstacles) 6. Sadhana (realisation of ambitions)
7. Naidhana (danger, death inflicting) 8. Mitra (good,
friendly) 9. Paramamitra (very favourable)
To arrive at the above conclusion, it is necessary
to count from the birth star to the constellation ruling
on that day. And in case of marriages, always count
the star of the boy from that of the girl and not vice-
versa, since such counting will yield favourable result
in most of the cases. So, in the case of marriages
counting of the star of the boy from the girl should
be done. Hence to have a clear picture of the stars
and their padas in the charts a diagrammatic
representation is given below for ready reference:
Pisces Aries Taurus Gemini

Janma: For example, take Aswani star, the 3rd
from it i.e. Krittika and 5th i.e. Mrigasira and 7th
Punarvasu do not suit and should be rejected. Similar
procedure you should follow in case of other stars.

Anujanma: The next one take Makha star (10th),

the third from it Uttara and the 5th Chitta and the
7th star Visakha do not suit and hence have to be
rejected. Follow the same procedure in case of other
stars.

Trijanma; The next one Moola star (19th), the

3rd from it Uttarashada, the 5th Dhanista and the
7th Poorvahhadra do not agree and hence must be
rejected. Act likewise for the other stars. In short,
boy's star should not be 3rd, 5th, 7th, 12th, 14th,
16th, 21st, 23rd or 25th star from the girl's star to
have nakshatra compatibility.

Girls bom in the stars Krittika, Aslesha, Chitta,

Anuradha, Dhanista and Satabhisha should not
marry boys born in the stars Aslesha, Swathi,
Poorvahhadra, Dhanista, Bharani and Krittika,
respectively. If this rule is violated, married life
between them will not only be unhappy but will also
be of short duration. However, marriage between a
girl born in Aridra, Pubba (Poorva Phalguni) and
Pushy ami and a boy born in the 7th star counted
from the girl's is likely to be successful.

After the verification of the stars, count the Lagnas.

If they become 6, 8, 12 and 2, relationship is called
shastaka dwirdwadasm and not considered good.
However, there are certain exceptions which will be
dealt with separately.

Now, next step is to verify the rasis of the girl and

of the boy — if they have 6, 8, 12 and 2, relationship
is also called shastaka dwirdwadasam and not

19
considered good. However, there are certain
exceptions to this rule, and they would be enumerated
separately.

After verifying the rasis, study the 2nd, 4th, 5th,

7th, 8th and 12th houses and see whether they give
good and helpful strengths or not. After satisfying
yourself on this count, go into the consideration of
the Dasavida porutam or kutas to get an overall
picture of the horoscopes to pronounce the final
judgement.

Horoscope matching is not only a difficult task for

an astrologer but also an important and onerous one.
This is because parents of boys and girls entirely rely
on the strength of the astrologer's verdict and agree
for alliance.

As matrimonial alliances have life-long impact,

great care and caution must be exercised by the
astrologers in the examination of the horoscopes. If
all safeguards and precautions laid down in the
astrological science are taken care of, there is no
chance of an error creeping into the judgement
favouring a match. In that case, there will be no
matrimonial disharmony or discordance or marital
failures.

Here is a piece of advice for the parents of the

boys and girls. It is their duty to consult only
experienced and knowledgeable astrologers as
otherwise the marriage of their wards may result in
a fiasco. This has been observed in several cases
brought to my knowledge where parents had given
wrong information and the marriage failed, bringing
doom to the boys and girls and also to the parents.

The next question is how to treat the cases where

there's no certainty about the date of birth, or other
20
related details. In such cases one has to adopt the
method of knowing the nakshatras by their names
that are in vogue and then proceed. For both the boys
and girls, nakshatras have to be determined through
their names. One shouldn't make the mistake of
judging one from the chart and the other from the
name as this will gave wrong results. By this method
at least the rasi position could be known though not
the Lagna position. In such cases, one can proceed
from the rasi only.

To know the nakshatras based on the names, the

standard method is as follows : By looking into the
table (given below) one can know the nakshatras and
also the padas. This would help the rasi's location of
the boy and the girl which is quite sufficient in such
cases.
Beginning of the names Nakshatra

1. Chu, Chey, Cho, La Aswani

2. Li, Lu, Ley, Lo Bharani
3. Aa, Ee, U, A Krittika
4. O, Va, Vee, Vo Rohini
5. Vay, Vo, Kaa, Ke Mrigasira
6. Koo, Gha, Jna, Che Aridra
7. Kay, Ko, Haa, Hee Punarvasu
8. Hoo, Hay, Ho, Daa Pushyami
9. Dee, Doo, Day, Do Aslesha
10. Maa, Mee, Mo, May Makha
11. Mo, Taa, Tee, Too Pubba (Poorva Phalguni)
12. Tay, To, Paa, Pee Uttara (Uttara Phalguni)
13- Pu, Shaa, Noo, Thaa Hastha
14. Pay, Po, Raa, Ree Chitta
15. Ru, Ray, Raa, Tha Swathi

21
16. Thee, Thpo, They, Tho Visakha
17. Naa, Nee, Noo, Nay Anuradha
18. No, Yaa, Yee, Yoo Jyesta
19. Yay, Yo, Baa, Bee Moola
20. Bu, Dhaa, Bha, Dha Poorvashada
21. Bay, Bo, Jaa, Jee Uttarashada
22. Ju, Jay, Jo, Gha Sravanam
23. Gaa, Gee, Goo, Gay Dhanista
24. Go, Saa, See, Soo Satabhisha
25. Say, So, Daa, Dee Poorvabhadra
26. Du, Tha, Jna Uttarabhadra
27. De, Do, Chaa, Ghee Revathi

The nakshatra of a person is known from the first

letter of the name. For instance, in the name Varaha
or Vance, the first letter is Va. In the above table Va
falls in the 4th line, 2nd place suggesting the
constellation is Rohini-2 pada. Take James, it falls in
line 22nd 2nd place. The constellation is Sravana and
the rasi of James would be Makara. Thus for Krishna,
the first letter should be taken as KA and hence the
nakshatra would be Mrigasira-3 pada (5th line 3rd
place).

22
2. Dasavida Porutams (Kutas) and

Their Significance

It's obvious that it is not very difficult to match

horoscopes when all kinds of agreements are present
in the male and female horoscopes. But sometimes it
happens that one among the ten agreements could be
present while another is absent. So obviously, it is
very difficult to have all the porutams or agreements
present in two horoscopes for concluding an alliance-.
In such situations, the astrologer has to exercise his
own judgement bearing in mind the points discussed
in the preceding chapter.
In Kalaprakasika, it has been stated that
Dasavida porutam Kuta* is indispensable for
Brahmins, Gana porutam for Kshatriyas, Rasi
porutam for Vaishyas (JStree dirghd) and Yoni
porutam for Sudras.
Examination of planetary positions in both the
horoscopes is more important than the ten kinds of
porutams. The astrologer should verify if the defects,
due to the absence of any one of the ten agreements,
are well compensated by the planetary positions in
the boy's or the girl's horoscopes. In that case, no
serious thought need be given to any of the above
ten agreements.
So, let us now examine implications of Dasavida
porutams one by one.

(X) Dina porutam Gives good health and

longevity to the partner

* Kuta: Agreement

23
(ii) Gana porutam Confers prosperity on the
couple
(Hi) Mahendra Ensures good and prosperous
porutam children
(iv) Stree Dirgha Bestows all-round prosperity
porutam
(v) Yoni porutam Indicates sexual compatibility
of the partners
(i^) Rasi porutam Will bring prosperity in
family life
(vii) Rasyadhipa Enables the partners to be
porutam more loving and affectionate
towards each other
(iwOVasya porutam Promotes mental attraction
and affinity and happy
married life
(ix) Rajju porutam Ensures long and prospective
married life and is a must for
preventing mangalya dosha
(x) Vedha porutam Prevents unhappiness in
married life and ensures good
and cordial relationship
between the married couple
(xi) Nadi porutam This is considered to be the
most important and at the
same time the most significant
one. It signifies pulse or
nervous energy indicating
physiological and to a certain
extent hereditary factors, i.e.
blood group.
(i) Dina Kuta
If the star of the boy is 3rd, 5th and 7th from the
Janma nakshatra, and Anujanma nakshatra or Trijanma
nakshatra of the girl, there is no Dina porutam.
24
Anujanma nakshatras are the 10th and Trijanma
nakshatras are the 19th from the Janma nakshatras.
Count the constellation of the boy from that of the
girl and divide by 9. If the remainder is 2, 4, 6, 8, 0,
it is good. The number of units of compatibility
assigned to this kuta is 3 in case agreement is found.
(ii) Gana Kuta
This seems to have an important bearing on the
temperament and character of the couple concerned.
This is essential for a satisfactory marriage union.
Stars are classified into three groups as Deva (divine),
Manusha (human) and Rakshasa (diabolical). Deva
presents piety, goodness of character and charitable
nature. Manusha is a mixture of good and bad, while
Rakshasa suggests obsession with self-will,
domineering nature and violence. These different
natures are indicated by the birth constellations. A
Deva can marry a Deva, a Manusha can marry a
Manusha and a Rakshasa can marry a Rakshasa.
Manusha or a Deva boy should not marry a Rakshasa
a girl unless there are other neutralizing factors. But
marriage between a Rakshasa boy and a Deva or a
Manusha girl is possible. If marriage is brought about
between prohibited ganas, there will be quarrels and
disharmony. The couple would always look for an
opportunity for separation or divorce. The following
constellations denote the different ganas:

Deva Manusha Rakshasa

Aswani Bharani Krittika
Mrigasira Rohini Aslesha
Punarvasu Aridra Makha
Pushyami Puhha Chitta
(Poorva Phalguni)
Contd.
25
Hastha Uttara Visakha
(Uttara Phalguni)
Swathi Poorvashada Jyesta
Anuradha Uttarashada Moola
Sravana Poorvabhadra Dhanista
Revathi Uttarahhadra Satabhisham

Exceptions
(i) If the bride's star counted from that of the boy is
above 13, the evil effect will be warded off and
their horoscopes can be matched.
(ii)lf the janma rasi of the couple is the same
or if the lords of the janma rasis (sign occupied
by the Moon) either happen to be friends,
or are in Samasaptama then the horoscopes
can be matched even if there is no Gana
porutam.

(iii) Mahendra Kuta

The constellation of the boy counted from that of

the girl should be the 4th, 7th, 10th, 13th, 16th, 19th,
22nd or 25th. Mahendra porutam will bring harmony
and enhance longevity.
But if the boy's star is the 4th, 7th and 10th from
Anujanma nakshatra (10) or Trijanma nakshatra (19)
and if these stars have madhyama rajju dosha
between them, alliances should not be recommended
mainly on the strength of the Mahendra porutam
between the stars of the girls and boys.
The stars which have mutual madhyama rajju dosha
are given below:
1. Bharani 2. Mrigasira 3- Pushy ami
4. Pubba 5. Chitta 6, Anuradha
7. Poorvashada 8. Dhanista 9. Uttarashada
26
(iv) Stree Dirgha Porutam

If the boy's star counted from the girl's exceeds

13th, there is Stree Dirgha porutam between them
which is considered highly beneficial. Some authorities
hold that for a count of 13 and above, there is Stree
Dirgha porutam Some also believe that the boy's star
should preferably by beyond the 9th from that of the
girl. According to some authorities, the distance should
be more than 7 constellations.

(v) Yoni Kuta

Yoni means sex and by Yoni Kuta implies sexual

compatibility. The sexual urge of a person born, for
instance, in Chitta is supposed to be as strong as
that of a tiger. The human embryo, in the course of
its development, passes through various stages of
evolution - mammals, quadrapeds, etc., so the
tendencies of certain animals will be predominant.
Those born in Leo tend to have the character of a
lion, while those born in Aries are timid and mild.
If both the couples belong to the male constellation,
there are likely to be frequent quarrels and want of
agreement in sex matters. So the best way is to match
a male belonging to a male asterism with a female
belonging to female asterism. This will ensure marital
bliss. So the Yoni kuta takes into account the sexual
aspects of marriage and indicates sex affinities with
regard to degree of sexual-urge, sex-compatibility,
the size of the organ and so on. Medical reports
reveal that out of 300 comparative cases coming for
advice all but one showed sexual maladjustments.
This reveals the importance of Yoni kuta All the 27
constellations have been assigned certain animal
characteristics and sexes as given in the table on the
following page.

27
Male Female Class of Yoni

1. Aswani Satahhisha Horse

2. Bharani Revathi Elephant
3. Pushy ami Krittika Sheep
4. Rohini Mrigasira Serpent
5. Moola Aridra Dog
6. Aslesha Punarvasu Cat
7. Makha Pubba Rat
8. Uttara Uttarabhadra Cow
9. Swathi Hastha Buffalo
10. Visakha Chitta Tiger
11. Jyesta Anuradha Horse
12. Poorvashada Sravanam Monkey
73. Poorvabhadra Dhanista Lion
14. Uttarashada Mongoose

A marriage between the constellations indicating

same class of yoni and between the male and the
female stars of that yoni is said to lead to happiness,
perfect harmony and progeny If the male and the
female happen to be bom in friendly yonis, but both
represent female constellations, there will be moderate
happiness and agreement.
If the couple belong to both male constellations
there will be constant quarrels and unhappiness. If
a marriage is proposed between constellations
indicating unfriendly yonis, it is better to avoid that
marriage. For example, if marriage takes place
between a male born in Moola and a female born in
Aridra, it will turn out to be a happy one. The
constellation of Moola and Aridra represent the male
and female organs of dog. The union of these is
agreeable and leads to a favourable result to the fullest

28
extent. If marriage takes place between a man born
in the constellation Satabhisha and a girl born in
Punarvasu, both representing the female stars, the
marriage is passable but not so good as in the first
instance. Marriages between persons belonging to
constellations indicating inimical yonis are not
recommended. The number of units for this
agreement is 4.
The following pairs are hostile, and in matching
yonis they should be avoided.
Cow and tiger Serpent and mongoose
Elephant and lion Monkey and goat
Horse and buffalo Cat and rat.
Dog and hare
In the same way, similar pairs of constellations
typifying hostile pairs occurring in nature should be
avoided.
(vi) Rasi Porutam
For marriage, a male born in the 7th, 10th, 11th
or 8th, 9th and 12th signs from janma rasi of the girl
(the rasi where Moon is situated in the house) is
considered auspicious. If both male and female are
bom in one and the same rasi (Moon is posited) but
have different stars, the alliance is considered
auspicious. For example, if the girl is born in Pubba
star and the boy is born in Makha star, they are born
in the one and the same rasi, namely Simha (Leo), and
marriage between them is considered auspicious.
If the boy's rasi is 2nd from the girl's, the girl may
become a widow or the boy a widower.
If the boy's rasi is 3rd from the girl's, unhappy
married life will be the result.
If the boy's rasi is 4th from the girl's, frequent
quarrels will result.
If the boy's rasi is 5th from the girl's, she is likely
to become a widow.
If the boy's rasi is 6th from the girl's, diseases and
loss of children are the result.
But, for the girls born in odd signs as janma rasis
shastakam between their rasis and the boy's rasis are
not considered inauspicious. Similar if the rasi girl is
the 2nd and 12th there for become friendly.
Odd signs are Mesha (Aries), Mithuna (Gemini),
Simha (Leo), Tula (Libra), Dhanus (Sagittarius) and
Kumbha (Aquarius). On the other hand, if they are
bom in the remaining even rasis, there will be
shastakam and it should not be considered at all as
it produces great dosha.
If the boy's rasi is 7th from the girl's, happy married
life will be the result. This is called Samasaptama.
If the boy's rasi is 8th from that of the girl, the
couple will beget good children.
If the boy's rasi is 9th from that of the girl, the girl
will prove to be loyal and faithful to her husband.
If the boy's rasi is 10th from that of the girl, the
married life will be very happy one.
If the boy's rasi is 11th from that of the girl,
married life will be very happy and prosperous.
If the boy's rasi is 12th from that of the girl,
longevity and happy married life will be the result.
The number of units for this agreement is 7.
(vii) Rasaydhipa Porutam or Graha Maitram
This is the most important kuta or agreement as it
determines the physical disposition of the couple. The
mental qualities of the partners and their affection for
each other are of vital importance for a happy married
life. This must be tested before marriage. In considering

30
graha maitram, the friendship or compatibility of the
lords of the janma rasis is important. A table is given
below indicating the relationship between different
planets so that the readers may not have to refer to
other books.

Planetary Lordship

Friend Neutral Enemy

Sun Moon, Mars, Jupiter Mercury Saturn, Venus
Moon Sun, Mercury Mars, Jupiter
Venus, Saturn
Mars Sun, Moon, Jupiter Venus, Saturn Mercury
CKuja)
Mercury Sun, Venus Mars, Jupiter Moon
(Budha) Saturn
Jupiter Sun, Moon, Mars Saturn Mercury, Venus
(Guru)
Venus Mercury, Saturn Mars, Jupiter Sun, Moon
(Sukra)
Saturn Mercury, Venus Jupiter Sun, Moon Mars
(Sani)

Rahu and Ketu are not given as they are chaya

grahas and do not own any houses of their own.
Besides they are considered as malefic in general

Some suggest that in while considering the

planetary relationships, the temporary disposition
should also be taken into account. This is not necessary,
because the entire subject of adaptability hinges on
the birth constellations and not on the birth charts
as a whole.

When the lords of the janma rasis of the bride and

bridegroom are friends, the Rasi kuta is said to have
attained its full strength. When one is a friend and
the other is neutral, it is passable. When both are
neutral, Rasi kuta is very ordinary. When both are
enemies Rasi kuta does not exist.

31
Exception: Even when there is no friendship
between the rasi lords of the bridegroom and the
bride, Rasi kuta may be said to exist if friendship
exists between the planets owning the navamsa
occupied by the Moon.
The number of units for this kuta is 5.
Example : Suppose the janma lords are Venus and
Saturn — both are friends. Therefore the kuta is
complete. Suppose the bride and the bridegroom are
born in Makha-2 (Leo) and Satabhisha-2 (Saturn), the
lords will be the Sun and Saturn respectively, and
they are not friends. In such a case, if the navamsa
relationship is considered then the Moon will be
Taurus (Venus) and Capricorn (Saturn) respectively.
Venus and Saturn are friends and therefore the match
is permissible. One will have to be very careful in the
assessment of these factors and merely on superficial
grounds, no horoscope should be rejected as
unsuitable or unlucky.

(viii) Rajju Porutam

This porutam indicates the strength or duration

of married life and therefore it merits special attention.

Astrologers are of the view that Rajju porutam

between boy's and girl's horoscopes can be matched
in the absence of other 9 kutas. From this, it is clear
that Rajju is an important porutam in matching the
horoscopes.
The 27 constellations have been grouped into five
types of Rajju. They are as follows:
Pada Rajju: Aswani, Aslesha, Makha, Jyesta,
Moola, Revathi.
Kali Rajju: Bharani, Pushyami, Pubba, Anuradha,
Poorvashada, Uttarabhadra.
32
Nahhi or Udara Rajju: Krittika, Punarvasu,
Uttara, Visakha, Uttarashada, Poorvabhadra.

Kanta Rajju: Rohini, Aridra, Hastna, Swathi,

Sravana, Satabhisha.

Siro Rajju: Dhanista, Chitta, Mrigasira.

Of all the above five Rajjus, Siro Rajju and Kanta

Rajju are highly inauspicious. Alliances between the
male and female whose stars come under the same
two Rajjus referred to above cause death of the boy/
girl respectively.

If the stars fall under the Nabhi Rajju, it indicates

loss of children.

If the stars fall under Kati Rajju (waist), it indicates

financial losses.

If the stars fall under Pada Rajju, it suggests change

of place and unnecessary expensive travels.

Hence, it is desirable that the boy and the girl have

stars belonging to different Rajjus or groups.

But if lords of janma rasis of the boy and that of

the girl are one and the same planet or if they are
mutual friends or if janma rasis of the boy and the girl
are in mutual Samasaptama position, Rajju Dosha,
Vedha Dosha, Gana Dosha, Rasi Dosha need not at all
be considered and the horoscopes can be matched
in spite of the said doshas.

Even if the stars of the boy and the girl are in

the same Rajju, and if one is in the ascending order
and the other in the descending order, there is no
Rajju Dosha, and alliance between the girl and the
boy is deemed good and auspicious as detailed
below:

33
Rajju Ascending Order Descending Order

Pada: Aswani Aslesha

Makha Jyesta
Moola Revathi

Kati: Bharani Pushyami

Pubba Anuradha
Poorvashada Uttarashada

Nabi: Krittika Punarvasu

Uttara Visakha
Uttarashada Poorvabhadra

Kanta: Rohini Aridra

Hastha Swathi
Sravanam Satabisha

Siro: Mrigasira
Chitta
Dhanista

If a girl's star is Krittika and the boy's star is

Visakha, both come under Nabhi Rajju. Since Krittika
is with ascending order and Visakha in the descending
order, the marriage between them is beneficial and
good. On the other hand, if the girl's star is Krittika
and the boy's star is Uttara, both stars come under
Nabhi Rajju and are same in the ascending order. This
is unfavourable and so marriage between a boy and a
girl born under these stars should, as far as possible,
be avoided.

Some astrologers are of the opinion that if there

is Dina Porutam, Mahepdra Porutam and Rasyadhipa
Porutam, marriage between the girl and the boy can
be recommended even if there is no Rajju Porutam.

Many find that there is Madhyama Rajju Porutam

Dosha in any of the following stars :
34
1. Bharani 2. Mrigasira 3. Pushyami
4. Pubba 5. Chitta 6. Anuradha
7. Poorvashada 8. Dhanista 9. Uttarabhadra
Marriage of the girls or boys born in any one of
the above stars with boys or girls respectively born
in any one of the remaining stars mentioned above,
should be avoided as there is Madhyama Rajju Dosha.
For example, if Pushyami, Pubba, Anuradha, Dhanista
are the stars of the males and females respectively,
marriage between them is not advisable.
(ix) Vedha Porutam
This means affliction. Certain stars are capable of
affecting or afflicting certain other stars situated at
a particular distance from them. For example, Aswani
is said to cause Vedha to 18th star, i.e. Jyesta, from
it, Bharani to the 16th star, i.e. Anuradha, and so on.
The following pairs of stars affect each other and,
therefore, no marriage should be brought about
between the boy and the girl whose Janma Nakshatras
belong to the same pair unless there are other
neutralising factors.
1. Aswani Jyesta
2. Bharani Anuradha
3. Krittika Visakha
4. Aridra Sravana
5. Moola Aslesha
6. Makha Revathi
7. Pushyami Poorvashada
8. Punarvasu Uttarashada
9- Uttarabhadra Pubba
10. Swathi Rohini
11. Hastha Satabhisham
12. Poorvabhadra Uttara
13- Mrigasira Chitta and Dhanista

35
Boys and girls whose nakshatras have vedha
dosha between them should not be matched.

(x) Nadi Porutam

Besides all the above agreements, there is another

one named Nadi Porutam. This is given importance
by astrologers at many places. This is considered to be
the most significant kuta or agreement. In Sanskrit.
Nadi has several meanings, but in astrology, it signifies
pulse or nervous energy indicating the physiological
and to a certain extent hereditary factors.

Ayurveda enumerates three Nadis or humours viz.

Vat a (wind), Pitta (bile) and Sleshma (phlegm). A
boy with a predominantly windy or phlegmatic or
bilious constitution should not marry a girl of the
same type. The girl should belong to a different
temperament. The three Nadis are ruled by different
stars as shown below :

Vata Pitta Sleshma

(Dakshin Parswa) (Madhya ma) (Vama Parswa)
Aswani Bharani Krittika
Aridra Mrigasira Rohini
Punarvasu Pushya mi Aslesha
Uttara Pubba Makha
Hastha Chitta Swathi
Jyesta Anuradha Visakha
Moola Poorvashada Uttarashada
Satabhisha Dhanista Sravana
Poorvabhadra Uttarabhadra Revathi

If the stars of the boy and girl to be matched fall

on different nadis, it is considered good and the
alliance between them will bestow a happy married
life.

36
If the boy's and the girl s stars belong to the same
group of madhyama nadi, it indicates death of the
husband. If they belong to Vama Parswa Nadi, it
indicates death of wife, and if they belong to
Dakshina Parswa Nadi, it indicates short life of wife.
If Nadi Kuta is not present on the basis of the
nakshatras then the same may be reckoned taking
into account the nakshatra padas. Thus the different
padas will be grouped by the three humours as shown
below:
Aswani-1 Aswani-2 Aswani-3
Bharani-2 Bharani-1 Aswani-4
Bharani-3 Bharani-4 Krittika-1
Krittika-4 Krittika-3 Krittika-2
Rohini-1 Rohini-2 Rohini-3

Beginning from Aswani-1, the counting should

be done forwards and backwards in turns as given
above. The unit ascribed to this Kuta is 8.

The evil due to Nadi Kuta can be ignored subject

to the following conditions:

(i) The rasi and Rajju Kuta prevail

(ii) The same planet is lord of the janma rasis of both
boy and girl
(in) The lords of the janma Rasis of the couple are
friends.
In some astrological books, it is mentioned that
there is no exception for madhyama nadi dosha as
this is a very unfortunate sign inflicting death on
the partners.
In many cases, the janma rasis of the janma
nakshatras of the bride and bridegroom would be the
same. Special attention is to be paid by the astrologer
to such exceptions which are discussed in the next
chapter.
37
(xi) Vasya Kuta

This is important in suggesting the degree of

magnetic control or amenability the wife or the
husband would be able to exercise on each other.

Rasi Vasya Rasi

Mesha (Aries) Simha, Vrischika (Leo &

Scorpio)
Vrishabha (Taurus) Kataka, Tula (Cancer & Libra)
Mithuna (Gemini) Kanya (Virgo)
Kataka (Cancer) Dhanus and Vrischika

Dhanus (Sagittarius) Meena (Pisces)
Makara (Capricorn) Kumbha, Mesha (Aquarius &
Aries)
Kumbha (Aquarius) Mesha (Aries)
Meena (Pisces) Makara (Capricorn)

The unit of agreement is 2.

(xii) Varna Kuta

Signify the degree of spiritual or ego development

of the marriage partners. The classification is as
under:

1. Pisces, Scorpio and Highest development

Cancer (Brahmins)
2. Leo, Sagittarius and Second grade (Khastriyas)
Libra

38
3. Aries, Gemini and Third grade (Vaishyas)
Capricorn
4. Taurus, Virgo and Last grade (Sudra)
Capricorn

A girl belonging to a higher grade of spiritual

development should not be matched to a boy of
lesser development. The vice-versa both belonging to
the same grade or degree is allowed. The unit of
agreement is 1.

39
3. Common Janma Rasi

Views differ in regard to the results occurring

from janma rasis being common. Narada says common
janma rasi would be beneficial to the couple provided
they are born in different nakshatras. Garga opines
that the asterism of the boy should precede that of
the girl if the alliance is to be happy. If the reverse
happens (Stree-Purva), i.e. the constellation of the
girl precedes that of the boy, the alliance is not good.
This view is also supported by sages viz. Brihaspathi
and Bhrigu. The author of the Muhurta Tatwa goes
to the extent of saying that in case of common janma
rasis if the boy's nakshatra precedes that of the girl,
the kutas and adaptability need not be considered at
all.

Common Janma Nakshatras

The janma nakshatra of the bride and the
bridegroom being one and the same, the marriage is
approved in case of Rohini, Aridra, Makha, Hastha,
Visakha, Sravana, Uttarabhadra and Revathi.

The strength will be ordinary if the common janma

nakshatras are Aswani, Krittika, Mrigasira, Punarvasu,
Pushyami, Pubba, Uttara, Chitta, Anuradha,
Poorvashada and Uttarashada.

Bharani, Aslesha, Swathi, Jyesta, Moola, Dhanista,

Satabhisha and Poorvabhadra are not recommended,
if they are common.

Certain ancients are of the opinion that though

the janma nakshatras are same, the evil becomes
nullified if the padas are different. If the janma

40
nakshatras belong to two signs (e.g. Krittika), the
pada of the bride should relate to the preceding signs.
To further explain it, if Krittika is the common janma
nakshatra, the bride should have her janma rasi in
Mesha and the bridegroom in Vrishabha. If the
common janma nakshatras belong to two signs equally
(e.g. Mrigasira, Chitta etc.) the sign of the first and
two quarters should be that of the bridegroom.
The couple should not have the same janma rasi,
same nakshatra and pada. However with regard to
Satabhisha, Hastha, Swathi, Aswani, Krittika,
Poorvashada, Mrigasira and Makha, the evil given rise
to by nature of common janma rasi, nakshatra and
pada gets cancelled if the couple were born in the
first quarter.

Harmful Nakshatras

There is a belief among people that girls born

under certain stars cause the death of certain relatives.
For example, a girl bom in Visakha brings about the
death of her husband's younger brother so that the
parents generally try for a match of a boy who does
not have a younger brother. Even if there are other
neutralising factors, it is rejected on the simple ground
that the girl is bom in Visakha star. This is entirely
because of the ignorance of the astrologers. Only
certain padas or quarters should be held inauspicious
and not the entire nakshatra. With regard to Visakha,
only the last quarter is evil and not the first three. So
a girl bom in the first three quarters should not be
considered any danger to her husband's younger
brother.

Similarly, the boy or the girl bom in first quarter

of Moola is to be rejected as it is said that he or she
would cause the death of the father-in-law. The last
41
three quarters are beneficial. A girl born in Jyesta is
said to spell danger to her husband's elder brother.
Almost all the authorities agree that (certain parts of)
Moola, Aslesha, Jyesta and Visakha are destructive
stars as described here: Moola (first quarter) for
husband's father, Aslesha (first quarter) for husband's
mother, Jyesta (first quarter) for husband's elder
brother and Visakha (last quarter) for husband's
younger brother.

So, parents of the girls born in these constellations

find it difficult to select a partner whose father and
mother are not alive.

From the above description, it should not be

hurriedly considered that the stars of Moola and
Aslesha are very harmful. So a careful study of the
horoscopes of the girl bom in a quarter other than
the last quarter is required to be conducted. Father-
in-law is husband's father, 7th denotes the husband.
So the 9th from the 7th house will represent father
(3rd house). So if the 3rd house is strongly afflicted
in a female horoscope, and if she is born in the
constellation of Moola, she is likely to prove harmful
to the father-in-law.

Similarly, if a girl is born in Aslesha in unfavourable

quarter, it is believed that after her marriage, serious
harm will occur to her mother-in-law. This will be so
only when the 10th house (4th from the 7th) is strongly
afflicted in a female horoscope. If in the horoscope
of the girl bom in the star Moola, 4th and 3rd houses
are strong and receive benefic aspects, no harm will
come to the father-in-law. For a girl bom in Aslesha,
if her 10th house is strong and receives benefic
aspects, it will not prove harmful to the mother-in-
law. Similarly if the boy's horoscope is to be matched
with the girl's bom in Moola star, whose 9th house,

42
%
lord of the 9th and Sun Karaka for father are strong,
the horoscope can be matched without any hesitation
as it will not affect the father-in-law

Similarly, for girls born in Aslesha, the strength of

the 4th house of the boy to be matched with her must
be determined. If the 4th house, 4th house lord and
Moon, Karaka for mother are strong in boy's
horoscope, his horoscope can be matched safely with
a girl born in Aslesha.

So, let not parents get scared if the daughters are

born in Moola, or Aslesha stars, as these stars by
themselves do not prove harmful to the in-laws unless
the 3rd and the 10th houses are very weak and
afflicted, and unless the 9th and 4th houses in boy's
horoscope are similarly badly afflicted.
Some are of the opinion that the dosha is applicable
to girls only born in Moola, Aslesha, Jyesta and
Visakha stars and not for boys. However in the
Kalamrita at the end, it is mentioned even boys also
carry the dosha.

But several parents who approach me say that

they got their boys and girls married with the above
stars and both the father-in-law and mother-in-law are
quite healthy and are now aged beyond 70 years.
In my opinion, every individual has his/her own
horoscope which shows longevity and if the longevity
stars are quite strong and unblemished they live long
in spite of the above beliefs. So it may not be quite
relevant to attribute the dosha to be matched. He
alone who gives birth to you knows when to take you
back. So it's all God's wishes and no one is responsible
for the other's death.

43
4. Kuja Dosha

The position of Venus and Mars is very important

in judging the marital relations. Mars whose nature
is fire rules marriage. When he is badly situated or
associated within the horoscopes of the male or the
female, it follows the fire gets extinguished soon.
Such unfortunate situations go under the name of
Kuja Dosha or Mangalik (in North India).

It is unfortunate that throughout South India

especially in Tamilnadu much is made of the so-called
Kuja Dosha or Mangalik, and the bugbear has been
responsible for destroying the happiness of many
families by preventing marriages of their children,
who otherwise are very much eligible and anxious
to get married. It is firmly mentioned in Keralasastra
that "If Mars is in the 2nd, 12th, 4th, 7th or 8th houses
in the horoscope of the female, an early death of the
husband will occur. Similar situations in the husband's
horoscope cause the early death of the wife."

The Lagna represents body, Moon mind, and Venus

sexual relations. Hence, these houses have to be
reckoned with reference to all the three viz. Lagna,
Moon and Venus. The dosha is usually considered
weak when it exists in Lagna, a little stronger in
Moon, and still more powerful in Venus. Here I. do
not agree with this thinking. For a horoscope, Lagna
is the most important one and from this only the
houses are counted. Though the dosha has not been
mentioned by ancients, it has crept in vogue perhaps
due to some strange coincidences which caused harm
to the couples. This particular deviation seems to

44
bring in many problems and several horoscopes get
rejected. Especially for the girls' parents finding the
right match remains a problem.

We are made to believe that Lagna is that particular

moment which is restricted in time which varies
from Lagna to Lagna, whereas Moon and Venus change
rasis once in 2lA days and 30 days respectively. This
is lot of time. Thus Lagna loses its significance. If we
apply these principles, most of the horoscopes get
rejected since the Kuja Dosha can be present from
some point or the other. Though exceptions are given,
people are not easily convinced and stick to the old
thinking.

But we are all aware that Kendra, Trikona,

Panapara, Apoklima and Upachayas are considered
from the Lagna, and not from any other planet. So
when such a system is in vogue why deviate in certain
other cases.

The Jaimini system also gives importance to Lagna,

and from Lagna the other Lagnas like (1) Aruda Lagna,
(2) Bhava Lagna, (3) Hora Lagna, (4) Varnada Lagna
and (5) Ghatika Lagna are considered. So also the
selection of Brahma, Mahendra and Rudra are
considered from the Lagna only.

The Tajaka system also recognises the Lagna and

its importance. It must be remembered that while
interpreting annual horoscope, a connection is
recognised between the birth chart and an actual
mathematical point known as Muntha. The New Year
or anniversary is said to commence when the Sun
comes back to the place where it was at the time of
birth. So, it is imperative to note that importance
should be attached to the Lagna only and not to Moon
or Venus. Besides, the planets postings like Venus or

45
Guru cancels the Kuja Dosha. So if we take Moon and
Venus as the Lagna, the significance is lost. Hence I
am of the firm opinion that Kuja Dosha should be
considered only from Lagna and not from any other
planet as this is the actual event of the birth from
which all other aspects of life are conferred on the
native. This is very clear from the dictum given by
Vaidyanatha Deekshitha in his Jathaka Parijatha.
The 2nd house signifies family, the 12th represents
comforts and pleasures of the couch, the 4th indicates
sukham or happiness, the 7th indicates husband, and
the 8th represents longevity of the wife or husband.
Hence the position of Mars in these houses is supposed
to produce this peculiar dosha or evil. If Kuja Dosha
is present in both the horoscopes, the dosha gets
cancelled. There are of course many good
combinations which assure marital felicity, and hence
much importance need not be given to Kuja Dosha,
since it gets cancelled at a number of places if an
experienced astrologer examines the chart.
The exceptions are: Mars in 2nd house can be
said to be bad provided such house is in any other
sign than Gemini and Virgo. If in the 12th house,
dosha is produced when such and 12th house is in
any other sign than Taurus and Libra, the 4th house
Mars causes Dosha provided the house falls in any
sign other than Aries and Scorpio. When the 7th is
other than Capricorn and Cancer, the dosha gives
rise to and Mars gives bad effects in the 8th provided
8th is in any other sign than Sagittarius and (Meena)
Pisces. In Aquarius and Leo, Mars provides no dosha
whatsoever.
The dosha is counteracted by the conjunction of
Mars with Jupiter, Mercury and Moon, or by the
presence of Jupiter or Venus in the Lagna or ascendant.

46
Thus, it will be seen that Kuja Dosha does not
deserve that consideration which is now being paid
to it. While examining horoscopes for matrimonial
alliance, there are various other factors which should
be carefully considered.
Mars combined with Jupiter produces Guru-
Mangala, and Mars with Moon produces 'Sasi Mangala
yoga' and by this yoga Mars gets bereft of its malefic
influence.
Mars in the 7th in Vrischika should not be
considered as malefic since he is in his own house
causing 'Ruchaka yoga', one of the "Pancha maha
purusha yogas".
If Makara owns the 12th house and is in the 8th
house, it produces one of the best yogas called 'Sarala
Yoga*. Hence Mars should not be considered malefic.
For the same reason, Mars in the 12th house for
persons born in Dhanus is also benefic.
Mars situated in the 8th house in the signs owned
by Jupiter (Dhanus, Meena) will not cause any dosha.
If Makara or Kataka happen to be the 7th and if
Mars is situated there, there is no Kuja Dosha.
There are some other exceptions for Kuja Dosha
enumerated below:
1. Mars has no dosha in houses owned by Sun, Moon
and Saturn.
2. Mars in moveable signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra and
Makara) cancels the dosha.
3. If Venus or Jupiter is in the Lagna, there is no dosha
wherever the Mars may be, so it cancels the dosha.
4. If the lord of the house where Mars is in kendra
or kona from Lagna or Moon, no dosha is formed.
5. If Mars is posted in debilitated, retrograde or
combust house, it loses the strength to form Kuja
Dosha.
47
6. If Mars is in combination with or aspected by
good Jupiter, Mercury, bright Moon or Venus, no
dosha is considered.
7. Mars giving Ruchaka yoga cancels the Dosha.
8. When Saturn is posted in the ascendant, 4th, 6th,
or 8th or 12th house, it causes no dosha.
9. When Mars is placed in Aswani, Makha and Moola
constellations the dosha gets cancelled.
10. When there is an exchange of signs for Virgo
ascendant, Mars is posted in the Sagittarius and
Jupiter in Scorpio.
11. Mars in Sagittarius for Capricorn Lagna, in Pisces
or Pisces for Virgo Lagna and Aquarius for Cancer
Lagna cancels the dosha.
12. A man and woman having similar dosha can be
matched and the dosha gets cancelled.
So, Kuja Dosha indicates hindrance and a deadlock
in marriage. This means Mars maleficence which has
threatened people particularly in India. Nowhere in
the world this is considered as an obstacle to marriage.
Apart from Kuja Dosha, there are many other
combinations which are responsible for the misfire
of the marriage. Venus too in a female horoscope if
found afflicted causes troubles in married life.

If we go through the ancient literature, Kuja Dosha

hasn't been mentioned anywhere. Although
Vaidyanatha Deekshitar in his Jataka Parijatha has
stated that Mars in 2nd, 7th, 4th, 8th may cause the
death of wife, and in a woman's chart the same position
causes the death of the husband. Mahadeva is more
general in his Jataka Tatwa. Mantreswara has not
mentioned anything about the situation of Mars.
Parasara has given importance with exceptions in
Brihat Hora.

48
Mars being a natural malefic planet, it aspects the
other houses while in 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th and 12th.
Mars has been termed fierce because of its fiery
aggressive and explosive nature. Rashness, heat and
energy are its special traits. So to save the marriage
from such acts, a safe-guard has to be taken from such
cruel planets. In foreign countries it is taken as a
contract; but in India it is regarded as a religious
ceremony contemplating the equality of the partners
as the basis. Marriage in India is termed as a union
of two souls to the exclusion of the rest of the world.
So, in India, every care is to be taken to keep the
marriage free from divorce or separation unlike in the
western countries.

Much on this subject has been written in books

and magazines. According to these, Kuja Dosha is
nothing and such afflictions in the married life are
due to other planetary afflictions. Then why not
consider this affliction too to safeguard the marriage,
and to maintain our civilisation and not for
modernisation.

Exceptions listed above have no legal sanctions.

Except Parasara, no one mentioned these. Basically,
these are based on the experiences of saints and
sages. When we follow the other directions then why
not follow this too in spirit and action?

So matching of horoscopes according to

astrological cannons is a must and should not be
sacrificed for the sake of modernisation. The efficacy
of the astrology in marriage settlement is also helpful
and provides guidance.

Kuja Dosha for All Ascendants

Novice astrologers who have not studied the

subject in depth decide Kuja Dosha merely by the
49
presence of Mars in 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, and 12th
houses from Lagna in birth chart without caring
for the exceptions which render the dosha null and
void.

The positions of Mars in a horoscope from Lagna,

Moon and Venus are to be read. The author has
experienced that Kuja Dosha for Lagna becomes too
strong. Hence, Kuja Dosha should be considered from
Lagna only and not from others.

Now, let us deal with the position of the Mars in

all the houses from all the ascendants for the benefit
of the readers and for their ready reference subject
to aspects and conjunctions in a particular horoscope.

1. Aries (Mesha)

Mars is the owner of Lagna and 8th house, so

malefic but being for Aries ascendants, it is more
strong in the 8th house, so results of Lagna will
predominate. Overall, Mars is benefic if unafflicted.
Especially for females Mars being in Lagna or in 8th
house is good for mangalya bhava. Conjunction of
Sun and Jupiter with 8th is specially benefic for females
and males.

Lagna or 1st house: Mars is in own house, hence

no Kuja Dosha.

2nd house: This house denotes family. Taurus is

a fixed sign. The lord of house is Venus. Mars aspects
5th, 8th, 9th houses. The aspect on 8th house causes
the death of wife or husband as 8th denotes longevity.
Here it does not fall into any exception. So Kuja
Dosha is formed unless aspected or conjoined with
benefic Jupiter. The 2nd house also denotes Kutumbam
or family. The impairment of family is a big blow to
the native. So here analyse Mars carefully.

50
4th house: This house indicates happiness in the
family, 4th being Sukhadipathi. Here Mars aspects the
7th house being the house of partner of
Kalatrastahnam. So both the above points are afflicted.
This Kuja Dosha will not give the death of the partner
but family happiness and wife's traits will be impaired.
But Mars is in the house of Moon, this cancels the
dosha. Also Mars in 4th house if in Aries or Scorpio
does not form Kuja Dosha. Moreover it is a moveable
sign, and also Mars neecha place.
7th house: Mars is in the house of enemy, Venus,
aspects Lagna and 2nd house, produces evil but no
Kuja Dosha exists as it is the house of Venus and falls
under exception.
8th house: Mars is in own house. Scorpio as
indicated is benefic being ekadhipatyam, his aspects
on 2nd house will not cause evil. So no dosha. This
is the house of longevity.
12th house: Mars is in Pisces lord of which is
Jupiter. This exempts Mars from forming Kuja Dosha.
No doubt, he aspects the 7th house, and carries over
the effects of Jupiter. 12th indicates bedroom
pleasures, sleeping comforts etc. So no dosha.

2. Taurus (Vrishabha)

Mars is the lord of 7th and 12th houses. A malefic

lord of kendra gives good results provided not afflicted.
So his presence in 2nd house of family will do good.
His occupation and aspect can therefore fortify any
house.
1st house: Mars in enemy's sign and in a fixed
sign. Kuja Dosha exists. But if lord of 1st house Venus
is in Kendra or trine from the ascendant or Moon as
the case may be, affliction of Kuja Dosha is cancelled
or nullified.
51
2nd house: Mars does not give Kuja Dosha because
it falls in the sign of Mercury and Gemini. So it is an
exception.
4th house: The lord of the house is Sun, i.e. Leo.
So no dosha whatsoever. It also comes under exception
since Mars in Sun's sign does not give Kuja Dosha.
7th house: Mars in own house, i.e. Scorpio, does
not indicate any dosha from Lagna, Moon or Venus
as it falls within exception.
8th house: The lord of the 8th house is Jupiter,
i.e. Dhanus, so no dosha since the sign occupied by
Mars is ruled by Jupiter and happens to be the 8th
house.
12th house: Mars is in own house Aries and is a
moveable sign. So it falls under two exceptions. So
no Dosha is formed.

3. Gemini (Mithuna)
For Gemini, Lagna is the owner of 6th and 11th
houses. So it is malefic.
1st house: The lord of Gemini is Mercury. Hence
it does not form any dosha as it comes under exception.
2nd house: Mars in Cancer house belonging to
Moon and also its neecha house (debilitation) and
also a moveable sign. So it comes under three
exceptions and hence no dosha.
4th house: For this Kuja Dosha exists. However
conjunctions and aspects should be seen. But 4th
house is Kanya (Virgo) and also belongs to Mercury
and should be studied under exception. Hence no
dosha.
7th house: This is the sign of Jupiter whose sign
is Dhanus (Sagittarius). But Mars for this Lagna is
52
malefic. Hence Dosha exists, but being Jupiter's house
may not cause serious dosha.

8th house: It is Capricorn (Makara) which is a

moveable sign and its place of exaltation. Hence
cancels dosha, besides it is the house of Saturn.

12th house: Taurus sign coincides with 12th

house. It falls under exception. Hence no dosha.

4. Cancer (Kataka)

For Cancer Lagna, Mars is yogakaraka since he is

the 5th and 10th lords which are kona and kendra
houses. Also it belongs to Moon.
1st house: Mars in Cancer in any house does not
indicate Kuja Dosha. Under exception. Hence no Kuja
Dosha.

2nd house: This is Leo (Simha) and belongs to

Sun and hence no Kuja Dosha as it comes under
exception since Mars does not form any dosha
whatsoever.

4th house: This is Tula and belongs to Venus and

also a moveable sign. Hence, no dosha as it falls under
exception.

7th house: This will be Capricorn (Makara) and

is its uncha house, hence falls under exception. Hence
no dosha.

8th house: This is Kumbha and hence no dosha.

Mars does not form any dosha in Aquarius (Kumbha)
and Leo (Simha.)

12th house: Mars in Virgo, Gemini, Taurus and

Libra coming under the 12th house does not form
Kuja Dosha.

53
5. Leo (Simha)
This is the house of Sun and Mars is a yogakaraka
being the lord of 4th and 9th which are kendra and
kona houses. His occupation can only bring about
good results.

1st house: Mars in Leo anywhere in the horoscope

falls under exception and does not form Kuja Dosha.

2nd house: Virgo and Gemini coinciding with

2nd house fall under exception and hence do not
form Kuja Dosha.

4th house: Scorpio will be the 4th house and it

belongs to Mars being his own house swakshetra.
Hence, no Kuja Dosha.

7th house: This is Aquarius (Kumbha) and hence

does not cause Kuja Dosha.

8th house: Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Capricorn and

Jupiter signs Dhanus and Pisces coinciding with the
8th house fall under exception, and hence no Kuja
Dosha.

12th house: Mars in 12th is Cancer sign being

house of debilitation and also belongs to Moon. Hence
no Kuja Dosha.

6. Virgo (Kanya)

For Virgo Lagna, Mars is malefic being the lord of

3rd and 8th.

1st house: Being a malefic for this Lagna causes

dosha. But being Mercury house nothing unfortunate
will result.

2nd house: It is Libra (Tula) being enemy causes

Kuja Dosha. But if aspected by benefics, it removes
Kuja Dosha and hence the aspects should be seen.
54
4th house: Again Mars being in the house of
Jupiter, it does not conform to exception. So Mars
causes Kuja Dosha here. Benefic aspects to be seen
for the cancellation of the dosha. Jupiter is a malefic
for Virgo Lagna being a benefic lord of the kendras.

7th house: Again Mars in the house of Jupiter

whose sign is Pisces and causes Kuja Dosha. But the
other version being Jupiter's house Pisces for Virgo
Lagna does not indicate evil results.

8th house: No Kuja Dosha is caused by Mars

being his own house Aries for Virgo Lagna, as it falls
under exception.

12th house: Mars in Leo in 12th house indicates

no Kuja Dosha.

7. Libra (Tula)

Mars is the lord of 2nd and 7th houses which are

termed as Maraka houses. Being lord of the 2nd house,
it is malefic but lord of kendra is benefic. So when
strong, it gives good results.
1st house: One of Maraka house lord in Lagna
constitutes Kuja Dosha. But being in Venus house and
Chara Rasi should not cause dosha, as it comes under
exception.
2nd house: No Kuja Dosha being his own house
Scorpio.
4th house: This being Capricorn, Mars' exalted
house, does not form Kuja Dosha.
7th house: Mars again in his own sign Mesha
(Aries), hence no Kuja Dosha.
8th house: Mars in Taurus belonging to Venus.
Hence cannot form Kuja Dosha, as it comes under
exception.

55
12th house: Again in Mercury house, i.e. Virgo.
Hence no dosha as it comes under exception.

8. Scorpio (Vrischika)

For this Lagna, Mars is the Lagna lord and lord of

the 6th house.

1st house: Mars in his own house, hence no Kuja

Dosha.

2nd house: Mars in the house of Jupiter, Sagittarius

(Dhanus). So it will not cause Dosha. Comes under
exception. Some are of the opinion that dosha exists.
Hence other aspects are to be considered.

4th house: It is Aquarius (Kumbha) and in

Aquarius Mars does not cause dosha.

7th house: In the sign of Taurus (Vrishabha),

which is a house of Venus, and hence cannot cause
Kuja Dosha.

8th house: It is Gemini (Mithuna) and belongs to

Mercury (Budha). It should come under exception.
But some are of the view that dosha exists. Hence
other aspects have to be considered.

12th house: It is Libra and belongs to Venus and

also a moveable sign. Hence, does not form Kuja
Dosha, as it falls under exception.

9- Sagittarius (Dhanus)
Mars is the lord of the 5th house trikona and also
12th house his own house, Scorpio (Vrischika).

1st house: Mars in the house of Jupiter. Hence no

Kuja Dosha.

2nd house: Mars in the house of Capricorn

(Makara), his exalted house. Hence no Kuja Dosha.
56
4th house: Mars again in the house of Jupiter
Pisces (Meena). Hence no dosha.

7th house: Some astrologers believe that dosha

exists. But being the house of Mercury, it should not
cause dosha. However, other aspects have to be
considered.

8th house: It is the house of Moon Kataka (Cancer)

and also Mars debilitation house. Hence no Kuja Dosha.

12th house: Mars in own sign and hence no

dosha.

10. Capricorn (Makara)

Mars is the lord of 4th and 11th houses.

1st house: It is Mars' exaltation house. Hence no

Kuja Dosha.

2nd house: Being Aquarius (Kumbha), no Kuja

Dosha, as it comes under exception.
4th house: It is Mars' own house Aries (Mesha)
and hence no Kuja Dosha.

7th house: It is Cancer (Kataka) and belongs to

Moon and also Mars' debilitation house. Hence no
Kuja Dosha.

8th house: It is Leo (Simha) and hence Mars

cannot form Kuja Dosha whatsoever. Comes under
exception.

12th house: It is Jupiter's house, so no Kuja Dosha.

But some are of the opinion that Dosha exists. Hence
the other aspects have to. be considered.

11. Aquarius (Kumbha)

Mars is the 3rd and 10th house lord. Hence brings

in mixed results.

57
1st house: Being Aquarius (Kumbha), no Kuja
Dosha.

2nd house: Some are of the opinion that it causes

dosha, but being Jupiter's house should come under
exception. The other aspects have to be considered.

4th house: It is Taurus (Vrishabha) and belongs

to Venus. Hence no dosha as it comes under exception.

7th house: Mars in Leo (Simha) and hence does

not cause dosha.

8th house: This is Virgo (Kanya) and belongs to

Mercury, hence no Dosha as it falls under exception.

12th house: This is Capricorn (Makara) and

belongs to Saturn and also Mars exaltation house,
hence no Kuja Dosha.

12. Pisces (Meena)

Mars is the lord of 2nd and 9th houses.

1st house: Some say there is dosha, but being
Jupiter's house should not cause dosha, hence other
aspects have to be considered.
2nd house: Mars' own house Mesha and hence
no Kuja Dosha.
4th house: Some say it forms Dosha. But being
Mercury's house, it should come under exception.
However other aspects have to be considered.

7th house: Again it's the house of Mercury. Some

say dosha exists. Hence the other aspects have to be
considered.

8th house: This being Libra (Tula) belongs to

Venus, hence it comes under exception and hence no
Kuja Dosha.

58
12th house: Being Aquarius (Kumbha), it should
not give kuja dosha. Other aspects are also to be
considered.

From the above analysis, it is found that Mars does

not cause kuja dosha everywhere in all the normally
said houses, 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th and 12th for all
ascendants. We find Kuja Dosha is found in the
following cases:

For Aries Lagna, in 2nd house only

For Taurus Lagna, in 1st house only
For Gemini Lagna, in 1st, 4th and 7th houses only
For Cancer Lagna, in the 8th house only
For Leo Lagna, there is no dosha in any house
For Virgo Lagna, in 1st, 2nd, 4th and 7th houses
only
For Libra Lagna, in 1st and 12th houses only
For Scorpio Lagna, 2nd and 8th houses only
For Sagittarius Lagna, in 2nd and 12th houses only
For Aquarius Lagna, in 1st and 2nd houses only
For Pisces Lagna, in 1st, 4th, 7th and 12th houses
only

But there are several contradictions in the above

analysis, hence it will be seen that at most of the
places Kuja Dosha does not form and hence it should
not be dreaded.

59
5. Papa Samayam and

Dosha Samayam

Sun, Mars, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu are malefics or

papa grahas. Budha (Mercury), Guru (Jupiter), Sukra
(Venus) and Moon with digital strength are benefics.
Some consider Budha's conjunction with Sun, and
other malefics, as a malefic.

If the above mentioned papa grahas are posted in

the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th and 12th houses from
Lagna, Moon or Sukra, they are said to contribute
papa dosha. And, if they are present in malefic houses,
it will cause Kalatra dosha and in a female horoscope,
it is said to cause Mangalya dosha.

So, horoscope matching is based on the principle

that dosha in a male horoscope contributes to death
or affliction of his partner. So it must be compensated
by equal papa dosha in a female horoscope
contributing to Mangalya dosha or affliction of the
husband so that both get balanced and married life
is happy.

Papa samayam is therefore based on the principle

that if, in the boy's horoscope, there is Kalatra dosha
it must be matched with a girl's horoscope where
there is dosha for the husband.

In female horoscope, the Mangalya Bhava should

be ascertained from the 8th house, and from the 7th
house husband and his prosperity. In the male
horoscope, 7th house is Kalatra Bhava, and 8th is the
sign of longevity. If there are malefics in the 7th and
8th houses of a female, dosha to husband is indicated.

60
So, in order to match the boy's horoscope with that
of the girl it must have malefics of equal strength in
the 7th house only. For, a girl with malefics in the 8th
house is not a suitable match at all. Instead, it will
hasten the malefic effects.

Further, malefics in the 7th and 8th houses which

are owned by other malefics cause more dosha than
would occur if they are situated in the 7th and 8th
houses owned by benefics.

If malefics are situated in these houses, it is their

own house. They will not prove harmful. If malefics
in the 7th and 8th houses receive the aspect of benefics
like Jupiter, the dosha gets cancelled.

Papa Dosha should also be seen from Moon and

Venus. But the strength from Lagna should only be
considered according to ancients.
It is a misconception that Kalatra Dosha to wife
will occur if malefics are in the 7th house in a male
horoscope. Even benefics in the 7th house can also
cause Kalatra Dosha. Like, if in a male horoscope,
Lagna is Scorpio or Vrischika and if Jupiter or Budha
is in the 7th house, dosha to wife will result. 5th lord,
whether he is malefic or benefic, should not be in the
7th house and this will bring in Kalatra Dosha.

In the same way, if Venus or Sukra is in the 7th

house in Scorpio or Vrischika which can also happen
if the Lagna is Taurus or Vrishabha, dosha to wife is
indicated.

If Mercury is in the 7th for a person born in

Scorpio or Vrishabha, Kalatra Dosha results.

If Jupiter is in the 7th in Makara or Capricorn

which can happen if the Lagna is cancer or Kataka,
loss of wife is indicated.

61
So while matching the boy's horoscope having
the above planetary positions which are detrimental
to the longevity of the wife, suitable horoscopes of
females with good longevity and papa dosha should
be selected. Astrologers should not overlook this
aspect.

Papa Samayam is the compatibility of doshas in

the horoscopes of males and females due to situation
of Papa Grahas, Sun, Mars, Ketu, Rahu and Saturn in
the 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th and 12th houses from the
Lagna, Moon sign and Venus. If the above malefics are
situated in the above mentioned houses from Lagna,
Moon and Venus in a female horoscope, it should be
matched only with male horoscope, having similar
Papa Grahas in the above stated five houses and vice
versa.

Dosha Samayam is that if any particular bhava in

either the male or female horoscope which are to be
matched, is weak, the bhava should be strong in the
other horoscope. Like if Lagna is weak in a male
horoscope, it should be matched with a girl's
horoscope having good Mangalya Bhava. Similarly the
other bhavas should also be checked and only then
any decision given.

Suppose a girl has strong Mangalya Dosha, it should

be matched with a boy having good longevity, keeping
other aspects in view. Similarly if the 5th house is
weak in one horoscope, it should not be matched
with the other having the similar putra bhava. Similarly,
if the 9th house is weak in one, it should be matched
with one having strong 9th house.

So, Dosha Samayam relates to all 12 bhavas, and

weakness in any bhava in a male or a female horoscope
to be matched must be compensated with the strength
of such bhavas in the other horoscope to enable the
62
couple to lead a very prosperous and happy married
life. It is further stressed that Dosha Samayam is more
important than Papa Samayam.

Dasa-sandhi

There should not be Dasa-sandhi in male and female

horoscopes. Dasa-sandhi is the period when one dasa
ends and the other starts. If dasa (not necessarily
identical) ends in male and female horoscopes at a
particular time with difference of less than 6 months,
it is not advisable to match such horoscopes, unless
the following dasas are extremely beneficial in both
the horoscopes.

If dosha dasa with evil powers to inflict death is

present in the girl's and the boy's charts in a particular
period, it should well be compensated by a very good
and helpful dasa in the other horoscope at that period
to promote matrimonial harmony. If the dasas are
inimical, the horoscopes should not be matched.

Dasa-sandhi has no meaning if the boy's and the

girl's horoscopes to be matched are not cast with the
same almanac or panchanga, as we see sometimes
wide variations in the duration of the stars given in
the panchangas on a particular day.

Though the above doshas are reckoned from Lagna,

Chandra Sukra, in practice it should be reckoned
from Lagna only as this is the actual event of birth
from which all other aspects of life are conferred on
the native. This is very clear from the dictum given
by Vaidyanatha Deekshitar in his Jataka Parijatha.

Sama Dasas

This is also taken into account, while matching

the horoscopes. If the boy and the girl to be matched
63
are running one and the same dasa as we notice in
several cases at a particular period, it is called sama
dasa. These are due to certain identical nakshatras of
the boy and the girl or their Anujanma and Trijanma
nakshatras from each other. This has to be reckoned
with Lagnas as the effects of the dasa will vary due
to ownership of good or bad houses of the Dasa
Lords. Boys and girls born in nakshatras very close
to each other and having got married, may also get
the sama dasa during certain periods of time in their
lives. Unless these dasas are very bad due to
ownership of bad houses from Lagna of the couples,
sama dasa will not prove harmful. So astrologers
should note this point carefully while matching the
horoscopes.

Samasaptama and Its Effects

It is stated that 'Samasaptama' or opposite Moon

signs and Lagnas in boy's and girl's horoscopes cause
marital happiness to the couples, the 7th being the
house of matrimony. When the boy's Lagna
(Ascendant) and the girl's Lagna are in Samasaptama
positions, it will cause physical attraction. Similarly
when the janma rasis (where Moon sign is posted)
happen to be in Samasaptama position, it is said to
cause mental attraction. Ancients have declared that
if Samasaptama is found, we should not look for other
kinds of agreements. This is based on the
understanding, when the minds are united, difference
of opinions would not arise. But there is one
exception to this rule. Shastras declare that all
Samasaptamas are good except Simha (Leo) and
Aquarius (Kumbha). This is based on the thinking
that lords of Simha (Leo) and Kumbha (Aquarius) are
mutual enemies. It is also considered that
Samasaptama between Capricorn (Makara) and

64
Cancer (Kataka) is also not good since Moon and
Saturn are also enemies.

Mahanakshatras

Some nakshatras are classified as 'Mahanakshatras'.

They are Makha, Mrigasira, Swathi and Anuradha.
Those born in the above nakshatras are exempt from
the consideration of the other kinds of agreements
(Dasavida Porutam). Some are also of the view that
Uttara, Uttarashada and Uttarabhadra also come under
Mahanakshatras.

Whatever might be the above sanctions, it is always

better to consider the other aspects also like star,
Lagna etc. Out of my experience I can say some of
the horoscopes mentioned above have yielded harmful
results. So the astrologer should review the important
points and should not merely approve simply on the
basics of above thinking.

Unity of Minds

Harmony of minds is the foremost element to be

considered while matching horoscopes. If there is
perfect harmony in the mental approach between
the couples, their marital life will be a great success.
Otherwise it would be a failure.

65
6. Remedial Measures

Our Rishis have prescribed religious rites or special

mantras to ward off evils and difficulties. If these are
followed in great faith and belief, misfortunes can be
averted including affliction likely to be caused by
various planets in the chart.

1. One should repeat 'Aditya Hrudayaam' three times

daily to have mental peace in both domestic and
official life. This will also vanquish one's enemies
and increase one's prosperity. Puranas say that
Sage Agastya told this to Lord Rama in the
battlefield and by repeating this Lord Rama killed
Ravana.
2. Those having bad dasas and who have to travel
frequently in planes, or on scooters and cars and
are prone to accidents anytime should repeat 'Maha
Mrityunjaya' mantra as many times as possible.
They should write the mantra on a piece of paper
and keep it in the pocket. It is a sure infallible
remedy.
3. Girls whose marriages are getting delayed should
do 'Gouri Puja' and repeat the stotram as many
times as possible before the portrait of Goddess
Durga Devi. Every married woman should repeat
'Kanaha Dhara Stotram' on all Tuesdays and Fridays
which will bestow on her good manglaya and
financial prosperity. If a dasa of a particular planet
afflicts the native, he/she should propitiate deity
to the planet and seek relief.
4. All those running bad dasas or Antardasas should
repeat Navagraha Stotram nine times daily.

66
5. Girls whose marriage is delayed due to Kuja Dosha
should adopt any one of the following remedial
measures intended for propitiating the Goddess
for expediting the marriage.

The first is the chanting of Sri Mangala Chandika

Stotra by the girls before five-faced lamp (pancha-
mukhi deepam). The second is Parvati Swayamvara
sloka on every Friday evening before panchamukhi
deepam, and it has even got the effect of a discarded
or ill-treated wife joining her husband. I have tried
this on some girls and discarded ladies and it has
yielded desired results.

Presiding Deities for the Planets

Planet Presiding Deity

1. Sun Lord Shiva

2. Moon Goddess Uma

3. Mars (Kuja) Lord Subrahamanya

4. Mercury (Budha) Lord Vishnu
5. Guru (Jupiter) Lord Brahma or Rudra
6. Sukra (Venus) Goddess Durga or Lakshmi
7. Saturn (Sani) Lord Siva, Venkateswara, Balaji
8. Rahu Serpent God and Lord Skanda
or Goddess Durga

9. Ketu Serpent God, MahaGanapathi.

Those who are having or running the dasas of the

above planets must propitiate the presiding deity of
the planet for mental and domestic peace, health and
longevity.

Many learned Astrologers recommend wearing of

stones to alleviate the evil effects of malefic planets
67
in their horoscopes. The stones pertaining to each
planet are given in the table:

Gems

Planet Gem

Sun Ruby
Moon White Pearl, Silver
Mars (Kuja) Red Coral, Copper and Gold
Mercury (Budha) Green Emerald, Gold
Jupiter (Guru) Yellow, yellow sapphire
(Pukhraj), Gold, Kanaka-
pushyaragam or Yellow Topaz.
Venus (Sukra) Variegated colours, Diamond,
Silver.
Saturn Black, Blue sapphire and Iron
Rahu Dark Gomedh, Lead and Gold
Ketu Spotted colours, Cat's-eye, Gold
alloy of metals.

For gems like ruby, emerald, pukhraj (Kanaka,

Pushya Ragam), blue sapphire 5-carats wt. in gold
ring.

For diamond in gold ring, it depends upon the

purse and affordability of the person.
For Rahu, Ketu and Mars, i.e. Gomedh, Cat's-eye,
and Coral and Pearl, 2-carats wt. in silver fixed. One
can wear them as rings or as pendants in the neck.

Navaratna ring in gold is suggested when majority

of the planets are afflicted. It can also be worn as a
locket in the neck.

For Kalasarpa dosham one has to get it nivarana

by going to Sri Kalahasti temple near Tirupathi in

68
Andhra Pradesh. After this, visit Lord Venkateswara
Balaji at Tirumala. If this dosha is found in the
horoscope, one has to get it done as early as possible
since one-third of life will go in misery and troubles,
i.e. up to 33 to 40 years in age. This dosha delays the
marriage of girls and boys, and also causes problems
in married life.

When there is Sade-sathi i.e. IV2 years Saturn

period, one is advised to fast on Saturdays from
morning up to 3.00 p.m. and after bath visit Lord
Venkateswara Balaji temple and have normal food at
night. Ladies should avoid this during periods. One
can give alms to three or four poor people or^.
Saturdays. But one can take coffee, tea, fruits or biscuits
etc. during the fasting period — no heavy food to be
taken. This also delays the marriage in boys and girls.

On several persons I have tried this and the natives

have had good results and are happy. Even marriages
were settled.

PART-II

71
7. The Married Life

Once the compatibility factor has been worked

out, people often wish to know what type of husband/
wife one would get etc. Just to fulfil the inquisitiveness
of the people in this regard, a few general aspects are
treated in the following pages.

The 7th house mainly refers to marriage, wife or

husband and marital happiness. Hence the positions
of the 7th lord in different houses with reference to
Lagna are enumerated below:

7th Lord in Different Houses

7th lord in the first house: The native may

marry someone he has known since childhood or
one who has been brought up in the same house. The
wife or husband will be a stable and mature person.
The husband will be intelligent and capable of
weighing the pros and cons of given situations.
Afflictions to the 7th lord may entail constant
travelling. If the 7th lord and Venus are afflicted, the
native may be sensual and seek clandestine
relationships with the opposite sex.

7th lord in the 2nd house: The native will get

wealth from women or through marriage. If afflicted,
one may earn money through despicable means. If
the 2nd lord is a dual sign and afflicted, more than
one marriage is likely. If a Maraka Dasa is on, the
native may die during the period of the 7th lord. The
person will have a wavering mind and would always
be sensually inclined.

72
In the 3fci house: This disposition gives lucky
brothers who live abroad. If afflicted, the native may
indulge in adultery and cause misfortunes to co-boms.
Female issues survive. Marriage may take place with
close relatives or close family friends. Late marriage
after 25 years or preferably in the 27th year which
will be happy. If Mars or Saturn aspect, relatives will
blame the girl for marriage.

In the male chart, if the 7th lord is combust, the

wife of the native will either be shortlived or sickly.
If 5th house lord and house are strong and well
disposed, favourable results are predicted for children.

In the 4th house: This disposition gives a lucky

and happy married partner with children and
comforts. The native may have the benefit of high
academic qualifications and own vehicles. If afflicted,
domestic harmony may be spoiled through alliance
with an immature and mean partner. The native may
run into endless problems on account of his vehicles.
If severely afflicted by nodes and other malefics, the
character of native's wife may be questionable.

In the 5th house: An early marriage, the partner

may hail from an affluent and well-to-do family. The
wife or husband will be mature and bring advantage
to the partner. If the lord is weak, they may have no
children. If there are afflictions and benefics
influencing the 7th house, the native may get only
female progeny. The native will possess good
character. Marriage through profession with a self-
made man is likely. Marriage will be approved by
parents.

In the 6th house: The native may have two

marriages with both partners living. One may marry
a cousin such as uncle's daughter. If badly afflicted

73
and the Karaka Venus is also ill-disposed, one may
suffer from impotency and many other diseases. The
native's wife may be sickly and jealous by nature
denying the husband happiness from marriage. If
Venus is weak but not afflicted, one may desert or
lose one's partner through some indiscreet act. Love
or self-arranged marriage opposed by relatives. The
marriage will be unhappy.

In the 7th house: If well placed, the native will

have a charming and magnetic personality. Women
will flock to him and seek him out for alliance. The
wife or husband will be a just and honourable person
coming from a family of reputation and social standing.
If afflicted, one is likely to lead a lonely life devoid
of marriage and friends and suffer loss through
marriage negotiations.

In the 8th house: When well placed, marriage

may take place with some relative or the partner may
be a rich person. Afflictions will cause the early
death of the partner while the native may die in
distant lands. It gives a sickly and ill-tempered wife
or husband leading to estrangement and separation.
Late or delayed marriage.

In the 9th house: If fortified, the father may live

abroad while the native may make fortune in foreign
lands. He will get an accomplished wife who will
enable him to lead a righteous life. If afflicted, the
father may die early, married partner may drag the
native from the righteous course (Dharmic) of life
and he may waste wealth and suffer penury.

In the 10th house: The native may flourish in a

profession abroad or his career could involve constant
travelling. One may get a devoted and faithful wife
or husband. The wife may also be employed and
contribute to the native's income. Or, she may help
74
in the advancement of the native's career. If afflicted,
wife will be avaricious and overambitious but without
sufficient capacity. Consequently, the native's career
may suffer and deteriorate.

In the 11th house: There may be more than one

marriage, or the native may associate with many
women. If benefically disposed, wife may hail from
a rich background or bring much wealth. If afflicted,
the native may marry more than once, but one wife
will outlive him.

In the 12th house: There may be more than one

marriage. The native may marry second time
clandestinely while the first wife is still alive. Or, if
afflicted, one may marry second time after losing the
first wife by death or separation. But if the affliction
is severe, the wife and husband may die or separate
after marriage, and there is no second marriage. Death
may occur while travelling or in foreign lands. If both
Karaka and the 7th lord are weak, the native may only
dream of woman but never marry. The native's wife
could hail from a servant's family. He will be close-
fisted and generally poor.

These results occur if the 7th lord is placed in

different bhavas or houses. But they may not be applied
literally to the charts without considering the entire
chart as a whole and after assessing the strengths and
weaknesses of the several planets.

Planets in the 7th House

Sun: The native will be fair and have thinning

hair. He will have few friends and would find difficulty
in getting along with people. Marriage is delayed and
troubled. Fond of travelling, he will have loose morals.
He would like foreign things. His wife's character will
be questionable, and the native will run the risk of
75
loss and disgrace through women. He will incur the
dipleasure of government and suffer humiliation. He
could be deformed.

Moon : The native will be passionate and easily

roused to jealousy. Mother may die while the native
is young. Wife will be good-looking but the native
will seek other women. Narrow-minded but sociable,
he will be energetic and successful in life. He would
hail from a good family if the Moon is waxing and
otherwise strong. If the Moon is waning, he will
always be quarrelling with his enemies.

Mars: The native will be henpecked and submissive

to women. Married life will have clashes and tensions
or there may be two wives. The native will be rash
and indulge in speculation. He will be intelligent,
tactless, stubborn, peevish and unsuccessful.

Mercury: A man of virtue and geniality, he will

dress well and tastefully. He will have profound
knowledge of law. He will be skilled in business and
trade tactics. He will have writing ability and success
early in life. Early marriage to a rich woman is
predicted. Learned in mantras and astrology and
astronomy, he will be religious and of a devout
temperament. But if afflicted, the native will be
cunning and deceitful. He will have a good physique
and looks.

Marriage is influenced by relations and may come

through travel, correspondence or advertisement.
Partner will be younger than the native.

Jupiter: Diplomatic and kind-hearted, the native

gets a virtuous good-looking and a chaste wife. He
will have good education and gains through marriage.
He will be sensitive to others' feelings. He has a
speculative mind and is a good agriculturalist. He

76
undertakes pilgrimages to distant places and is
superior to father in his qualities. He will possess
good sons.

Venus; Fond of quarrelling, sensuous and passion-

ate, the native has unhealthy habits although a happy
marriage and a devoted wife. He is fond of pleasure
and drink, is suave and charming with winning man-
ners. He has a magnetic personality. There is a danger
of loss of virility due to diseases or excesses. He is
successful in partnership with those of opposite sex.

Saturn: The native is likely to be under the wife's

control. The wife could be ugly or hunch-backed. He
will have more than one marriage or marriage with a
widow, divorcee or one of advanced age. He will be
diplomatic and enterprising. He could have a residence
abroad, a stable marriage and political success. He is
expected to get honour and distinction in foreign
lands. He will suffer from colic pains and deafness.
Rahu: The native brings ill-repute to family if a
female. He will be unconventional and heterodox. He
will have affairs with outcaste women or foreigners.
His wife may suffer from womb disorders. He is fond
of good food, has luxurious habits and suffers from
diabetes, ghosts and supernatural forces.

Ketu: The native has unhappy marriage with a

shrewd wife. He is passionate, sinful, lusts after
widows. His wife is sickly. The native suffers from
cancer in the abdomen or uterus if a female. He will
suffer humiliation and loss of virility.

The above are general results and will have to be

modified according to the aspects and other
associations received by the planets in the 7th house.

77
8. Spouse and Married Life

Spouse means husband or wife, and in this context,

a major role is played out by the lady. Every male
wants that his partner should be beautiful, of amiable
nature, educated and wise, so is the case with the
ladies. So let us now see astrological factors dealing
with the qualities of spouse.

Beauty

It's a characteristic that, conventionally speaking,

is a prerequisite and essential for a woman. According
to astrology, all even signs viz. Taurus, Cancer, Virgo,
Scorpio, Capricorn and Pisces are cardinal or female
signs and are preferable as ascendants or Lagna when
a girl is born. Gemini and libra are male signs, yet
can be grouped under female signs. Venus and Mars
are two planets and they add complexion and beauty
to women if they are in proximity or exalted in the
ascendants.

Women with Virgo or Pisces ascendants with

Hastha and Revathi nakshatras, respectively, are
destined to possess lustre and beauty, and are able to
maintain it without much effort for a long time. Their
natural physical features are most regular and these
help them in maintaining harmony and peace in the
houses.

Women born with Taurus (Vrishabha) and libra

(Tula) as the ascendant are good-looking, love beauty
and neatness and are of harmonius nature. As a wife,
such girls are the best.

78
Ladies with Scorpio ascendant have a spectacular
look besides their eyes are deep and heart-searching,
and nose straight. Their beauty is somewhat peculiar.
Sex appeal is abnormal. They are more or less shy and
take pleasure in concealing their defects skilfully.

These are only the guidelines which are not to be

taken as rigid and final. Overall effects of different
aspects are to be checked.

Marriage

In order to predict a legal marriage, first ascertain

if she is destined to marry or not, what type of
marriage is possible, and when. How will the married
life be? Such questions are dealt with here and can
be checked from the horoscope.
Promised Marriages

1. Moon or Venus in fruitful signs and also in the

7th house.
2. Jupiter or Venus occupying 2nd, 7th or 11th
house.
3. Venus or Jupiter co-joined with Moon in 1st, 3th,
10th or 11th house.
4. Moon as well as Venus is not aspected by Saturn
and is stronger than Saturn.
3. Lagna and 7th house lords are in 3rd, 5th, 11th
houses together.
6. Benefics in 2nd, 7th, 11th houses from Lagna and
Moon sign have favourable connections with
benefics.
7. Mercury in 7th house and Venus conjoined with
7th house lord.
8. Lord of 7th in 11th house and Venus in the 2nd
house.

79
9. Venus in Lagna and lord of Lagna in the 7th.
10. Benefics in 1st, 2nd or 7th house or lords of 2nd
and 11th house in mutual exchange.
11. 7th house lord is not posited in 6th, 8th or 12th
and is aspected by benefics.

No Marriage

1. If any of the three planets Venus, Sun apd Moon

is aspected by or conjoined with Saturn, or if any
one of the trio, particularly Moon, is associated
with Saturn's nakshatra, there is no possibility of
marriage.
2. When Sun, Moon and the 5th lord are in
conjunction with or aspected by Saturn.
3. If Venus is placed at a distance of 43° or more
from debilitated Sun and is aspected or conjoined
with Saturn, negotiations will fall through at the
time of final stage.
4. If 7th house is vacant and Moon in case of woman
and Sun in case of man are aspected by Saturn
occupying Scorpio sign, marriage is not a
certainty.
5. If the 7th lord, Lagna and Venus fall in barren
signs viz. Gemini, Leo, Virgo and Sagittarius.
6. Malefics in 6th, 7th, 8th houses or malefics in
both sides of the 7th house are unfavourable for
marriage.
7. If Saturn is in 7th aspected or conjoined also
with malefics.
8. Venus and Moon are in opposition without any
benefic aspect.
9. Venus conjoins Moon aspected by Mars and Saturn
and the 7th house is not aspected by Jupiter or
malefics in 1st, 7th and 12th houses.

80
10. Lord of the 7th in the 12th without any benefic
aspect but receives malefic aspects of Saturn,
Sun and Rahu.

Delayed Marriage

In case of a male, all information about the wife

is to be obtained from the 7th house, its lord and
Venus.

But in case of female, 7th and 8th houses and their

lords and Mars are to be analysed to check about the
husband.

Sometimes it happens that a promised marriage

comes late in life. Nowadays due to changed conditions
marriage of the girls is solemnised between 25 and
30 years but in reality it is considered as late marriage.
Main planets responsible for such delays are Saturn,
Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Rahu. A few combinations
are given below:

1. If Saturn is either in 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, JOth from

Lagna or Moon sign and if Saturn does not have
benefical houses.
2. A malefic in the 7th house, Saturn, or even Mars
in own sign delays marriage.
3. If Mars is in the 8th or Rahu in the 7th.
4. If Mars and Venus combine in 5th, 7th or 9th
house, but receive evil aspect from Jupiter.
5. If 7th lord and Jupiter are aspected by Saturn.
6. Malefics in 6th, 8th and 12th houses.
7. If Lagna, Moon and Sun are under malefic aspects.
8. When Rahu and Mars are related to the 7th house
or Venus.
9. When 7th lord is posted in 6th, 2nd and 12th
from 7th house, girl's marriage is delayed. This

81
is a powerful yoga for delayed marriage and is
further strengthened when a malefic associates
with 7th lord or in the 7th house.
10. Rahu and Venus in Lagna or in 7th house or Mars
and Sun in the 7th house with other afflictions
cause delay in marriage.

Time of Marriage

Predicting the time of marriage is a ticklish

question which worries parents. In such cases the
astrologer should check yogas that confer marriage,
planetary conditions at birth and in transit, dasa,
bhukti and antaradasa etq. He should give due regard
to the following points also:
1. If the ascendant rasi of a Navamasa chart is falling
in 7th house of birth chart, and the 7th lord is
in 12th from Ascendant, marriage will take place
between 16 and 25 years.

2. When 2nd lord is posted in 11th house and 11th

lord in 2nd house, marriage will take place
between 16 and 25 years of age.

3. When 2nd lord is in 11th house and Lagna lord

is in the 10th house, marriage may take place
between 17 and 20 years of age.

4. When Venus is in Kendra (1, 4, 7, 10) and 7th

lord is posted in any house owned by Saturn,
aspected by a benefic, marriage is between the
age of 23 and 28 years.

5. When 2nd house is occupied by Venus and 7th

lord is in 11th, marriage is between 23 and 28
years of age.

6. When 7th house is occupied by Venus, Moon and

Saturn, the marriage will not be possible before
30 years of age. It may occur even in 35th year.

82
7. If Sun is in the 7th and the 7th lord conjoins
Venus in Kendra, marriage is possible between
30 and 33 years of age.
8. During the dasa period of 7th lord, marriage may
take place.

9. 7th lord from Venus or Moon may hasten the

marriage during the dasa and antardasa.
10. Add degrees of the planets indicated by
constellations associated with Moon and the 7th
house lord. When Jupiter transits that rasi and
Amsa, marriage will take place.
11. Find out rasi and Amsa by addition of degrees of
Lagna lord Venus and 7th lord. When Jupiter
transits over that rasi and Amsa, marriage is
possible.
Married Life
A happy married life is a boon to the native. An
unhappy married life has many reasons. Broadly
speaking, adultery, widowhood, separation, divorce,
harsh temperament of either partner, undutiful
husband or wife, no issues, plural marriage, abnormal
sexuality, dowry demands and ill behaviour of in-laws
etc. are the causes for an unhappy married life. These
issues can be analysed astrologically through your
horoscope.
Happy Married Life
The following yogas may be checked from the
horoscope of the husband and wife:
1. Jupiter and Venus being the 7th lord and
significator, or 2nd and 11th houses.
2. If the 7th house is occupied by its lord receives
aspect of a benefic planet and also 7th house lord
from either Lagna or Moon is favourably disposed.

83
In the above two cases the married life is expected
to be happy.
The natal horoscopes of husband and wife are
intersected and have to be judged in conjunction
with each other. From 1st and 7th house of both
the charts, you can judge the status, family, health,
wealth, education, etc. of the husband. You can
judge too the life of the husband and wife. If any
one of them is governed or aspected by an evil
planet, the disparities and afflictions would follow.
1st and 7th houses favourably governed and
aspected will result in happy married life.
3. Venus and Mars in good aspect are very
advantageous provided they are not the
significators of the 6th, 8th and 12th houses.
4. If 7th house to Lagna or Moon sign is occupied
or aspected by benefics, by lordship, it will
indicate a happy married life.
5. In a female chart, a good Jupiter in the 7th will
give a good husband and a happy married life.
6. If 7th or 8th house is occupied by a malefic but
benefic in the 9th house, it indicates that the lady
will enjoy a long lease of happy married life.
7. Jupiter lord of 2nd and 5th in the 9th house
exaltation (Scorpio Lagna) and 9th lord exalted
in Kendra (7th house) confer good fortune and
a happy married life.
8. If the 7th house lord is exalted and Lagna lord
occupies Lagna.
9. When 7th lord is a benefic planet and free from
afflictions, happy married life is indicated.

Unhappy Married Life

A few yogas on the subject are given on the

following page.
84
1. A conjunction of Moon and Venus is not conducive
to a happy married life.

2. If 7th lord in the 12th house or in 6th house or

8th and malefic aspect or association.

3. If the 7th house is afflicted, there may be quarrels

and misunderstandings.

4. If Moon, Mars and Venus or two luminaries (Sun

and Moon) are in the 7th house, the woman will
associate with other men at the instance of her
husband, leading to an unhappy married life.

3. If there are malefics in the 7th house and that

planet is inimical to the 7th lord of ascendant,
marriage will not be peaceful and happy.

6. If Mars and Venus are in any way afflicted.

7. The 4th house denotes family members. So when

4th house is afflicted, it indicates disturbed family
life.

8. When Rahu is in 4th house in a female chart, an

unhappy married life is predicted.

9. If the 7th house is posted with malefic planet and

7th lord his enemy, the woman will have constant
quarrels with the husband.

10. When Saturn is in the 7th house not being his

own house or house of its exaltation, the woman
will be discarded by her husband.

11. When Saturn, Rahu etc.. transit the 7th house,

Moon, Venus etc. or aspect them, during the
transit of these, there would be misunderstand-
ings, quarrels or unhappy incidents in the family.

Two marriages can be predicted either through

death or separation of first wife when:

85
1. Venus, Saturn, Moon and Mars in the 7th house.
2. Venus in 4th or 8th posited in between Sun, Saturn
and Mars.
3. Pisces as ascendant, 8th lord in Lagna associated
or aspected by Rahu.
4. Saturn in 2nd, Rahu in 9th, 7th lord and a malefic
in the 3rd house.
5. Cancer as ascendant, Saturn in 8th, Mars in 4th,
Saturn in 7th from Venus or Venus in 2nd.

86
9. Divorce or Separation

There are various reasons of separation and divorce

between wife and husband. In judging the horoscopes,
the basic rule of 'Separative Influence' is to be
analysed.

The rule says that "Sun, Saturn, Rahu and 12th

house lord and lords of signs occupied by these planets
are separative". These cause separation.

For example, if two or more of the abovt

mentioned planets influence 4th house and its lord,
one is forced to leave his home or country of birth.
If they influence the 7th house and its lord, one gets
separated from his wife or husband. If they influence
the 10th house and its lord and Sun, one has to be
separated from the ruling powers, viz. resigning from
service, termination of service, change in profession
etc. So in view of these, the following few yogas are
predicted/provided:

1. Jupiter in the 7th house, generally, even lord of

the 7th does not bestow satisfactory results. He
causes great disappointment and dissatisfaction
in married life. He causes undue delay in marriage.
2. Marital disharmony may occur resulting in
separation when Venus is found in Krittika, Moola,
Aridra or Jyesta stars. Out of these, Krittika is the
most inauspicious and gives very bad results.
3. When the 7th lord is in 6th afflicted by separative
influence, there may be separation. Similarly,
when the 7th lord or significator joins the 6th
lord and is afflicted by aspect or conjunction of

87
malefics, similar results are likely. When strong
Jupiter makes a link with the above combinations
in any way, separation is saved, but the husband
and wife experience quarrels.
4. 6th house denotes legal disputes and connection
of malefic 6th lord with the 7th house or significator
may resultin legal actions or separation, i.e. through
courts. Also when the 7th lord or significator joins
the 6th house being afflicted by malefics.
5. When the 7th house, 7th lord and significator are
all afflicted, conjoined, associated or aspected
by malefics, unhappiness in married life is
indicated. Significators are Venus for males and
Mars for females.
6. When Rahu and Saturn join Lagna, one is likely
to face strife and separation in married life. When
the 7th lord is retrograde and is also afflicted,
similar results are expected.
7. When in a female chart, Aries, Scorpio Lagna rise
and the 7th lord is weak, combust or retrograde
and is also afflicted, the wife will be abandoned
by the husband.
8. If combination of Sun and Mars in either
horoscope is in 2nd, 7th or 8th house, it entails
disharmony and separation. It does not involve
loss of partner.
9. To analyse marriage, affliction to Venus by
situation, association or aspects or malefics have
an adverse effect on morals. Venus represents
the other partner of marriage.
10. When lords of 2nd and 7th houses are in
constellations of evil lords, particularly in the
constellation of 6th lord, and are afflicted, there
will be separation, divorce, litigation etc. between
the couple.
88
Love Marriage

Love marriage is an arranged marriage by the boy

and girl through their own choice overlooking the
customs.

The 5th house indicates customs and traditions.

Similarly religious Customs are studied from the 9th
house. The 7th house stands for partner and marriage.
Love marriage means abandoning of customs and
traditions. So, in such charts the 5th house is occupied
by strong planets or by own lords or emotional planets.
The strongest planet for creating an urge for love
marriage or relations is Saturn followed by Rahu. In
a male chart, if Venus is afflicted through conjunction
or aspected by Saturn or Rahu, a love marriage is
indicated.
So, the 5th, 7th and 9th houses and their lords are
involved in love marriage. Both the lords are seen in
conjunction or in trine or sexstile in 5th, 7th or 9th,
10th or 11th. In certain cases the 9th lord joins lords
of 5th or 7th. A simple formula for love marriage is
as follows:

1. Lord of 5th + Lord of 7th

2. Lord of 7th + Lord of 9th
3. Lord of 5th + Lord of 9th
The aspect of the above lords should be angular.

In a female chart, Mars plays the part of Venus in

a male chart. So, if Mars is aspected or conjoined in
her chart with Rahu or Saturn or aspects are there,
she flirts with a male and has illicit relations. Marriage
depends on the disposition of the Venus, Rahu, Saturn
and Moon in the male birth chart.

It is needless to say that the conjunction of the

above planets must be either in 5th, 7th (Primary)

89
10th, 11th or 1st houses (Secondary), otherwise the
prospective couples may have an opportunity to come
together for a long time without any prospects of a
successful marriage.

If the above conjunction falls in 6th, 8th or 12th

houses, frustration due to one reason or another cannot
be ruled out. Willingly or unwillingly, the lovers have
to sacrifice their love life and have to seek unknown
partners in marriage.

A few combinations for successful love marriage

are given below:

1. When Venus in male chart is in 12th house and

Mars in same house in female chart.
2. If there is a malefic planet in the 9th house.
3. For successful love marriage, a study of relative
and mutual disposition of Mars, Venus and Rahu
is essential as they cause sex perversions. Study
of Saturn, a primary cause of misery, is also to be
made.
4. If Venus and Mars exchange their places in the
charts of the couple, love marriage will be a great
success.

A Few General Observations

1. If Moon is situated in the 7th with digital strength,

the wife of the native will be beautiful. If the
Moon occupies Kanya Rasi 7th house, it indicates
love marriage, and the native will move very
freely and socially with the members of the
opposite sex.
2. Saturn in 7th to Chandra Lagna, there will be
some obstructions or impediments not only
during negotiations but also at the time of fixation
and at the time of celebration of the marriage.
90
3. If the lords of Lagna and 7th are in conjunction
or aspected by each other, the person will have
intimacy with a number of women.
4. If there is in the Lagna of the female 7th place
of male horoscope, it means the couple lives in
conjugal harmony for a long time subject to
exceptions.
5. If the lord of the 7th house is in Kendra, i.e. 1,
4, 7, 10, an early marriage will take place and
good wife is also expected.
6. If the 7th lord is in Lagna, the person will marry
a noble and an obedient lady.
7. If the Lagna lord and 7th lord are in Kendra 1,
4, 7, 10, the husband and wife live long without
any trouble in the conjugal relationship.
8. While scrutinising the horoscopes for matching
of male and female, Janma Lagna, Chandra Lagna
should not be Shatstaka (i.e. 6, 8, 12 should not
be there).
9. If lord of 7th is in 2nd house from Lagna, the wife
will always be sickly and not fit for family life.
10. If lord of 7th is in the 3rd house from Lagna, the
wife will be cordial and helpful.
11. If the 7th lord is in the 5th house from Lagna,
the wife will be very accommodative, and
virtuous, ideal and dutiful with a cool
temperament.
12. If lord of the 7th is in the 6th house from the
Lagna, the wife will be very talkative, obstinate
and quarrelsome.
13. If the 7th lord is in 8th house from Lagna, the
wife will be disobedient.
14. If the lord of the 7th from Lagna is in the 9th
house, the wife will be very cordial, affectionate,

91
devoted, chaste and a friend, guide and
philosopher.
15. If the lord of the 7th is in 10th house from Lagna,
the wife will be an asset to the family, will add
income through her intelligence and be in charge
of the house.
16. If the 7th lord is in 11th house from Lagna, the
wife will assist the husband in all ways like a
friend and dutiful partner.
17. If the lord of the 7th is in the 12th house from
Lagna, the wife will be spendthrift. She will not
enjoy family life and will be very garrulous.
18. If the Saturn is in the 7th house from Lagna, late
marriage is expected.
19- Kuja (Mars) in conjunction with Sukra (Venus),
Chandra (Moon) located in 1st, 4th, 7th, or 10th,
is not good for married life.
20. If at the 5th place (Putrasthana), Mars, Jupiter is
located, late marriage is expected.
21. If Sun is in the 7th house, the wife will be issueless.
22. Generally, in case of conjunction of Sukra (Venus)
and Saturn in any place in the horoscope the
wife will be a sickly woman.
23. Conjunction of Guru Qupiter) and Kuja (Mars) in
the 5th house is not desirable. The couple will
be childless or will have late issues.
24. In the 7th house, conjunction of Moon and Sukra
(Venus), Moon and Sun is not desirable. Generally,
marriage will not take place. In case marriage
takes place, there won't be any issues.
25. In case of Sun and Mars conjunction in any place,
widowhood is expected.
26. Generally, conjunction of Sukra (Venus) and Guru
Qupiter) in horoscope will cause a break in family
life.
92
27. If the 7th planet is located in the 8th place,
husband and wife will get separated.
28. If the 7th house or Lagna comes under the
influence of the Sun and Saturn, marriage cannot
take place.
29. If the Sun and Saturn are in mutual aspect in such
a way that the Saturn aspects the 7th house or
the Lagna, the prospects of marriage are very
remote.
30. If Sun is placed in the 7th and Saturn aspects him
either from the 5th or the 10th house, there will
be no marriage provided the 7th house is weak.
Stated above are only some general rules or
combinations. Only after studying the various aspects
and the entire horoscope, a sound opinion can be
given.

If you know astrologically as to which person is

a suitable life partner for which woman, one can have
a good marriage. A happy and prosperous family will
be based on correct calculations.

10. Direction from which

Husband/Wife Comes

It is always asked from an astrologers to indicate

from which direction the girl or the boy may come
from. We know the planets that preside over different
quarters. Now find out which of the three planets —
the one occupying the 7th house, its owner and
Venus — is the strongest. The quarter presided over by
this planet will be the direction of the husband/
bride's place. It may also be got from the planet that
rules the 7th house counted from Venus.

Results of Different Signs Ascending
(From Mesha to Meena)

Generally, one would like to know the general

character of a person (either boy or girl) while
matching the horoscopes. The Lagna is the main point
which reflects the basic character. Each sign of the
zodiac when ascending imprints its own definite
characteristics — mental, physical and personal. These
have of course to be blended with those of planets
rising or aspecting. The following delineations are for
signs alone without any planet in the first house. If
any planet is there, it will modify these testimonies.
For example, Sun adds nobleness to the figure and
increases health and constitution. Moon indicates
better proportion and greater delicacy of figure. Mars
gives a swarthy appearance to the person, healthy
constitution, sturdy figure, a temperament principally
of heat and dryness. Mercury makes the stature
proportionately well shaped, bodily, temperament
chiefly hot, and yellowish complexion. Jupiter gives
a fair complexion, large eyes and signified stature.
Venus produces qualities of a nature more applicable
to feminity, beauty, softness and greater delicacy of
form. Saturn gives black and curled hair, tall figure,
inactive and narrow chest.

Certain Exceptions

Gana Kuta: A Deva can marry a Deva, a Manusha

can marry a Manusha and a Rakshasa can marry a
Rakshasa.
Manusha or Deva/man should not marry a Rakshasa
girl unless there are other neutralising factors. But
marriage between a Rakshasa man and a Deva or
Manusha girl is possible.
Mahendra: For example, the star 25th counted
from the girl gives a balance of 7 which is Naidhana
star falling in the 3rd paraya. But it is mentioned that
Naidhana star should be avoided even if it falls in the
3rd paraya. But being the 25th comes under Mahendra
Kuta, which promotes well being and increases
longevity. So this supports the 25th star. Similar
exceptions should be looked into.
Stree Dirgha: This consideration may be ignored
if Rasi Kuta and Graha Maitram obtain.
Rasi Kuta: When both the rasis are owned by one
planet or if the lords of the two rasis happen to be
friends, the evil attributed above to the inauspicious
disposition of rasis gets cancelled.
Graha Maitram: Even when there is no friendship
between the Janma Rasi lords of the boy and the girl,
Rasi Kuta may be said to exist if friendship prevails
between the planets owning the Navamsas occupied
by them.
105
Rajju Kuta: Need not be considered if graha maitri
rasi, Dina and Mahendra Kutas are present.
Nadi Kuta: The evil due to Nadi can be ignored
subject to the following conditions:

(a) The Rasi and Rajju Kuta prevail, (b) the same
planet is lord of the Janma Rasis of both the male and
the female, and (c) the lords of the Janma Rasis of the
couple are friends.

However, it is mentioned in the texts that there

is no exception for Madhaymanadi Dosha as it is
considered very bad and brings in death of the
partners.
On Shastashtaka: In principles laid down for the
Kuta Agreement, astrologers very often differ. The
main reason seems to be that basic rules are applied
without taking into consideration various exceptions
stated. If the Rasi of the boy is 6th to that of the girl
(6-8), it is called Shastashtaka Dosha. Such combination
is to be rejected outright. But there are two exceptions
to this rule. Kalavidhana and Kalaprakashika have laid
down them as follows:
Exception-!: If the girl's star is in odd sign and
the boy's star in even sign which is the 6th from the
girl's rasi, it is Anukoola Shastashtaka producing good
results.
For a very odd sign the 6th will be an even sign.
The 6th from the Aries is Virgo which is an even sign.
If the girl's star is in Aries and the boy's star is in Virgo
there is no Shastaka Dosha. Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra,
Sagittarius and Aquarius are all odd signs. If the girl's
star is any one of these odd signs, there is no dosha.
This leaves us with six even rasis any one of which
may happen to be the Janma Rasi of the girl, and the
6th from it that of the boy.
106
Exception-II: If the lord of the Janma Rasi of the
girl and the lord of the Janma Rasi of the boy happen
to be the same planet, or if they are friendly planets,
Shastanga Dosha does not arise. This exception given
by Kalavidhana and Kalaprakashika is endorsed by
Kalidasa also in his Jayakachartdrika. For example,
if Taurus is the Janma Rasi, the 6th will be Libra. As
the same planet is the rasi (Ekadhipathyam) of both,
there is no trouble. If Janma Rasi of the girl is Cancer,
the 6th rasi from it will be Sagittarius. Moon lord of
the Cancer and Jupiter are friends. Hence, there is no
dosha.

Marriage between Cousins: Marriages between

cousins such as maternal uncle's or paternal aunt's
daughter/son are exempt from other considerations
of matching.

14. Conclusion

An attempt has been made to bring in all the

required information on horoscope matching at one
place and the book is dealt under two parts. The first
part deals with the essentials of marriage matching
aspects, while the second part deals with general
topics that are required for knowing the general
aspects and other information with regard to marriage.
A few illustrative charts are given for different
cases like late marriage, unhappy marriage, love
marriage, widowhood, etc. to facilitate a general
understanding and other aspects of astrological
significance.
Three compatibility charts have been given as I,
II and III for rating the compatibility by different
aspects, and a comparative appreciation of the charts
is required to have the accepted compatibility for a
happy married life. A generalised longevity chart is
also given.
Hence, it is expected that this will benefit the
readers very much and guide the selection of suitable
horoscopes for their daughters and sons for marriage
alliances. I pray to God to bestow long life and
prosperity to all the readers of this book.
It is also mentioned here that the author undertakes
astrological consultations and marriage matchings etc.,
