THE CREATIVE WORK IN THE LITERARY
AND/OR SOCIOPOLITICAL CONTEXT

What I Need to Know

After completing this module, you are expected to:
1. identify the kinds of context present/existing on the given selection;
2. explain what context is; and
3. use appropriate critical approaches in interpreting a written work in its
context.

What’s In
Directions: Study the given sets of pictures and guess the words. Write your answer
on a separate sheet of paper. (Note: The number of boxes correspond the
number of letters of the word. Then answer the processing questions
below.)
4 Pics 1 Word

4
Processing Questions:
1. What are the words that you have formed based from the pictures?
_____________________________________________________________________________

2. In what way, these contexts can help deepen your understanding of the text that
you read?
____________________________________________________________________________
The words that you have guessed/formed such as social, cultural, political, and literary
are some of the contexts that will lead you to choose certain critical approaches in
understanding creative or literary works.

Remember that literature is multidimensional, as it comprises many aspects of society,

such as culture, belief, and ideology. Knowing the right approach to interpreting the text
read will make it possible for you to appreciate creative works. In addition, it will give
you the opportunity to take part in enlightening critical conversations among your fellow
students and other significant others about works of literature, especially those dealing
with issues found in your society.

5
What’s New

What Is Context?
The definition of context is the setting within which a work of writing is situated.
Context provides meaning and clarity to the intended message. Context clues in a literary
work create a relationship between the writer and reader, giving a deeper understanding of
the intent and direction of the writing. Literary context is background information or
circumstances you provide to inform why something is taking place; context can also be
the backstory of a character, provided to inform their behaviour and personality.

The role of context is to bridge the gap between authors and their audiences,
strengthening readers’ comprehension and preventing miscommunication of the writer’s
intent. It’s not enough to know that a particular event is occurring—readers also need
context to know why.

To understand and appreciate a literary selection, a reader must understand the

significant contexts in which it was written.

TYPES OF CONTEXT
SOCIO- POLITICAL CONTEXT

The socio-political influences the morals of a nation as well.

Making or dissolving laws is a way not only for the majority to have a
voice, but also to establish a norm because the norm tends to be defined
by the majority.
• An example of a contemporary socio-political issue in the United
States is the issue of gun control. Citizens are conflicted about whether
private citizens should be allowed to own guns. That conflict has expanded
into government in the form of existing and impending regulations about gun
ownership. Another example of a socio-political issue in the United States is
immigration. The question of who should be allowed to live in the United
States as well as why and how has a direct impact on the society of the United
States. Government also plays a role in determining who can legally live in
the United States. Socio-political context plays a critical role on the global
stage as well. War is often the result of not just political conflict, but social
conflict as well.

6
SOCIAL CONTEXT

The social context of a text is the way in which the features of the
society it is set in impact on its meaning. There are two aspects to social
context: the kind of society in which the characters live, and the one in
which the author’s text was produced.

Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre was set in the same social context she herself
lived in. It was one in which women were seen as the lesser sex, there was a great
divide between the wealthy and lower class, and strict class boundaries were
enforced. All of these societal features are key in determining Brontë’s views on
the importance of social inclusion, and her championing of the strength of women.
Or just listen to Phoebe:

LITERARY CONTEXT

According to Robinson, creativity is about working in a highly focused way

on ideas and projects, crafting them into their best forms and making critical
judgments along the way.

Literary Work can be defined as branch of literature dealing with words as a

raw material to create a picture, an idea or a story in a meaningful pattern. While
Creative Writing is a creative work that values man as a creator and raises his
existence above the world of subsistence and the study of what is written is the way
(by which) another literate person sees and analyses the work in question.

Cultural Studies– is a multi-disciplinary approach which includes the perspectives

of humanistic disciplines such as literature and art and the social and behavioural
sciences such as anthropology, economics, and psychology.
As a critical perspective, it contests the older definition of culture and looks not
at the stable coherences of a society or a civilization’s history but its dissensions and
conflicts.

Sample Critical Question:

1. What kinds of gender identify, behavior, and attitudes are reflected in the work?
2. Is there any overtly or covertly expressed view of same-sex unions or relationships?
For instance: “We Filipinos are Mild drinkers” centers on the drinking habits of the
Filipinos and Americans and it uniquely showed the events that happened during
the war by making the atmosphere light and humorous. The kind of drink Joe
brought, “whiskey” and “lambanog” for the farmers revealed the characters’ culture.

7
New Historical Perspectives– is an approach in studying literature which provides
a context or background information on how literary works were perceived in their
time. This approach also shows how literary works reflect ideas and attitudes of the
time in which they were written. A newer approach, New Historicism, still considers
the contexts of literary works but this time emphasizes on analyzing historical
documents with the same amount of interest afforded to the literary works to be
interpreted.

Sample Critical Question:

1. To what extent are the lives of the characters influenced or determined by

the social, political, and economic forces?
For instance:
“Dhowli” speaks about the “Untouchables" of the caste system in the current
political time period that it was written. Dhowli was in the lower class called the
Dusads, and the man she loved but was forbidden to be with, Misrilal, was of a
higher a class call the Brahman. The short story "Dhowli" is full of hard political
circumstances that challenges Mahasweta’s young protagonist, Dhowli, in her
environment along with society as a whole. There is the Lender-borrower /rich-poor
relationship between Dhowli’s father and the Misras.

Marxist Perspective– is an approach that examines literature for its reflections of

how dominant elites exploit subordinate groups, how people become “alienated” from
each other, and how middle class values lead to the control and suppression of the
working classes. It sees literature’s value in promoting social and economic revolution
and considers the literary work as a “product” in relation to the actual economic and
social conditions that exist at the time of the work’s composition or the time and place
of the action it describes.

Sample Critical Question:

1. How does power relations reflected in the literary work manifest
themselves in the cultural practices and social institutions prevalent during
the time the work was written and published?
For instance: "Spots on Their Wings," revolves around a group of engineers
assigned to set up a watershed in the Cotabato interior, who find themselves
embroiled in the complexities of the Muslim-Christian conflict. The story
culminates in torture and murder, sparked by the men's having shouted
obscenities at Muslim women bathing naked in a river. The differences
between Muslim and Christian cultures are the most obvious elements of
contrast in the story. It delves into human souls and unearths the conflicts
that torment them-all come together to create this story that disturb in
gripping, sensual and sensitive ways. 8
Feminist Perspective– is an approach that typically sees literature as an arena in
which to contest for power and control and thus an agent for social transformation.
Like Historicism and Marxism, this approach also examines the social, economic, and
cultural aspects of literary works especially for what those works reveal about the
role, position, and influence of women

Sample Critical Question:

How are the relations between men and women, or those between members of
the opposite sex, presented in the work? What roles do men and women assume
and perform and with what consequence?
For instance: In “Dhowli” by Mahasweti Devi, the positions of women are basically
binary based and more seemingly the positions of marginalized women are more, and
are living on the edge of domination and suffering. It deals with a paradox and also falls
into the dilemma of gray-space: in between of marginal living/ centered living,
man/woman, dominated/ dominator. Moreover, they are subjugated in multiple shades
of oppression and domination.

What I can do

A. Directions: Read the excerpt of the short story Unseen War by Antonio Enriquez.
Identify the cultural and historical contexts found in it. Write your answers on a

The Unseen War
An excerpt from Enriquez (1996)

That very second the first volley burst from the 80 canons of the Spanish
armada, Senor Capitan Esteban de Murga, Maestre de Campo General Felipe
Macombong, Battalion Commander Santiago the Handsomer, the guide Orancaya
Sofocan, and the musketeers, lancers, bowmen, artillery men, and foot soldiers,
sprang from waiting behind Sultan Kudarat’s stronghold.

They would have rushed up like soldiers do smelling certain victory but for
the thick bushes, thickets, woody trees, and rough land; instead they marched or
tramped quickly, fast, northeastward; the infidel Moros, however, were aware only
of the Spanish Armada facing them at the bay, not of the forces behind them on
land; which, meticulously and systematically, started burning everything in sight;
cottas, sitios, and villages of the heathen Moros.

Orientations of
Creative Writing
What I Need to Know
After completing this module, you are expected to:
1. differentiate the four categories of a writer’s craft.

What’s In
In the previous lesson, you learned about setting a work of literature into its
cultural, social, and political contexts. You learned that even if works of literature
are fictional, they somehow depict person, events, places, and issues that are
realistic.

In analyzing these literary works, there are critical approaches that can be
used to situate these products of imagination into the readers’ very own
consciousness and experiences. Furthermore, recognizing the categories of a writer’s
craft enables you to examine and comprehend these literary works better.

Do you know what a writer’s craft is? Let’s find out.

What’s New

Creative writing is any writing that goes outside the bounds of normal
professional, journalistic, academic, or technical forms of literature, typically
identified by an emphasis on narrative craft, character development, and the use of
literary tropes or with various traditions of poetry and poetics
The creative works that we have been analyzing in this subject are all products
of this craft that we will learn in this part of our lesson. Laminack (2007) and Ray
(1999) referred craft as the art of writing. Specifically, the writer’s intentional use of
the following to create an effect on the reader:
➢ Figurative language ➢ Sound/dialogue
➢ Snapshots/imagery/details ➢ Sentence structure/stylistic devices
➢ Thought shots ➢ Text features
➢ Word choice/word placement ➢ Text structure

11
The following are the categories of craft:
1. Word Craft –This category refers to the usage of words in a text such as the
following:
➢ Language – Refers to the use of spoken and written words as a
communication system
➢ Word choice – Refers to the use of words and expressions in appropriate
contexts
➢ Vivid verbs – Refers to the use of action words that can be visually seen
and concretized by the readers such as saying “The man beamed” instead
of saying “The man was happy”
➢ Imagery – Refers to the use of figurative language in literature that
appeals to the human senses such “The starry night looked beautiful”
➢ Details – Refers to a particular item of information including descriptive
and illustrative ones that support an idea or contribute to an overall
impression of a written work
2. Structural Craft –This category refers to the construction of sentences and
paragraphs to form a cohesive whole. Structural craft includes the following
features:
➢ Text structure – Refers to the system of constructing a written work
➢ Paragraph type - Refers to how paragraphs are organized according to the
writer’s purpose such as narrative, expository, argumentative, and
descriptive.
➢ Transitional device – Refers to the use of words and phrases to show
transition of ideas in a paragraph to show contrast, addition, example,
and comparison such as in addition to, furthermore, on the other hand,
and on the contrary
➢ Parallel structure – Refers to the use of words and phrases having the
same grammatical structure joined by a connector such as in the garden
and in the backyard
➢ Repetition – Refers to the repetition of a word, phrase, or clause for
emphasis such as “and miles to go before I sleep, and miles to go before
I sleep”
➢ Page lay-out – Refers to how a certain page is designed using graphics,
textual designs, and other visual appeal to create an effect to the reader
3. Audible Craft–This category refers to how sound devices are used in a
text. This includes the following:
➢ Alliteration – Refers to the use of similar consonant sound at the
beginning of a word in a literary work such as “whither wilt thou wander”
➢ Assonance – Refers to the repetition of vowel sounds such as “rise high
in the bright sky”
➢ Onomatopoeia – Refers to the formation or use of words that imitate the
12
sound of something such as “the bell buzzed, clanged, and tinkled”
➢ Rhythm – Refers to the pattern formed by stressed and unstressed
syllables in poetry
➢ Cadence – Refers to the beat of measure of something that follows a set
rhythm
➢ Hard and soft sounds – Refers to the texture of sounds that relates to
the auditory impact that it produces to the reader such as the sound of
lightning compared to the sound of a baby’s laughter.
4. Visual Craft–This category refers to the use of visual features and includes
the following:
➢ Print Features – Refers to the mechanics on how texts are printed such
as setting texts in bold and italics, choosing font styles and sizes, choice
of color, and use of punctuation marks
➢ Line breaks - Refers to the spacing of lines/paragraphs in a page
➢ White space – Refers to the area of a page where there are no texts or
images
➢ Graphics - Refers to the use of pictures, illustrations, charts, maps, and
other diagrams in a page

Greatest Love of All I decided long ago

Whitney Houston Never to walk in anyone's shadows
If I fail, if I succeed
I believe the children are our future At least I'll live as I believe
Teach them well and let them lead the way
Show them all the beauty they possess inside No matter what they take from me
Give them a sense of pride to make it easier They can't take away my dignity
Let the children's laughter remind us how we Because the greatest love of all
used to be Is happening to me

Everybody searching for a hero I found the greatest love of all inside of me
People need someone to look up to The greatest love of all
I never found anyone who fulfil my needs Is easy to achieve
A lonely place to be Learning to love yourself
And so I learned to depend on me It is the greatest love of all

What’s New
Another genre of literature aside from poetry, drama, and short story are the
essays. The word essay came from the French word “essais” (Cantular, 2011).

An essay can be written by you on almost any subject reflecting your attempts to
express your experiences, ideas, and feelings about whatever topic you are writing on.
An essay may be written creatively especially the ones that are reflections of a writer’s
personal experience, feelings, and ideas. It uses ordinary, colloquial language and is
conversational in tone and style. It considers the following acronym to make it effective:

15
• C-Content
• R-Role
• A-Audience
• F-Format
• T-Topic

These are the key ingredients included in every CRAFT writing:

Content: What is the expected content of the essay?
Role of a writer:
You must decide who (or what) you will be. Will you be writing as an old car? Will you be
a piece of pavement? a bicycle? How about a person or even a bird continually exposed to
air pollution from cars?
Audience:
To whom are you writing? Are you writing to a specific person? to Congress? to a child?
to a machine? to a car? to an auto manufacturer?

Format:
What form will your writing take? Will you write a letter or a speech? Will it be an obituary,
a conversation, a memo, a journal, or a diary?
Topic + strong verb:
What is your topic? What strong verb will help you present your topic? For example,
persuade a congressman to vote for more ethanol in gasoline, demand that more fuel
efficient cars are built, plead for a car to be driven more efficiently

Let’s examine the sample essay below:

C = the farewell letter scolding the teens who destroyed the car.
R = car in a junk yard
A = teen who destroyed the car
F = farewell letter
T = take care of your car (scolding)

16
Dear Claude,

I've been forced to sit in this junk yard for the past year. Every day I've had to
face the loss of more and more body parts until there is almost nothing left of
me. But tomorrow, my time is up; I'm scheduled to be compacted, so I have to
write this letter now. It is hard for me to say this, but I think you need to know
you are a real jerk!

I gave you the best years of my life, and how did you treat me? You refused to
change my oil on a regular basis. (I get cranky when I have a dirty crankcase!)
You always fed me the cheapest fuel, never letting me have any fuel containing
detergents to help keep my parts clean. You constantly slammed on the brakes,
wearing the treads from my tires. You never checked my tire pressure. I had to
work extra hard to move with such low pressure in my tires. Do you know how
much gas money you wasted over the years by driving on underinflated tires?
You never gave me a lube job even though I was constantly screaming for one.
