LESSON 4
Identify what is being described by the following statement.
1. It refers to sealed-up, reliable, and cost-effective manufacturing of nanoscale materials,
structures, devices, and systems.
2. A type of microscope that utilizes a particle beam of electrons to light up a specimen and
develop a well-magnified image.
3. It trims down large pieces of materials into nanoscale. This process needs larger amounts
of materials and discards excess raw materials.
4. Refers to the science, engineering, and technology conducted at the nanoscale, which is
about 1 to 100 nanometers.
5. It is a method of generating nanoscale attributes by “stamping” or “printing” them onto a
surface.

REFLECTION:
1. Is the information age a boon or a bane? Why?
The world is rapidly evolving, with our lifestyles becoming increasingly digitized. This has
led to a shift from a more human, personal era to an era of overreliance on mechanical and
digitized support. Different generations have experienced this change differently. The digital
age has revolutionized society, offering benefits like social connectivity, learning opportunities,
and increased productivity. However, it also poses challenges like data security breaches, cyber
terrorism, cyberbullying, harassment, and intellectual property violations. The digital revolution
poses a significant threat to human rights, necessitating international and domestic laws to
protect individual rights like privacy, speech, expression, association, discrimination, and
unreasonable search and seizure.
2. How does the Information Age influence our society?
The information age, facilitated by technologies like computers, the internet, smartphones,
and satellites, has revolutionized various sectors, including education, business, agriculture,
engineering, military, and security. These technologies have influenced daily life, government
operations, and industries, presenting both advantages and disadvantages for each sector.
3. As a part of the planet earth, what can you do in your own simple way to
help in the advancement of science and technology for the improvement of
society?
I would start by educating people about environmental issues, and then I would use my
scientific knowledge to develop simple machines that anyone could build.
4. Reflect on this “Gene therapy is still in its infancy, but it is believed that as it
matures, it will become an effective treatment for the myriad of genetic
diseases that affect humanity.”
Gene therapy is an experimental approach that modifies or prevents disease by
using genes. Although it is still in its infancy, gene therapy is already thought to be
beneficial in treating several illnesses. However, as time goes on and new
technologies are created, gene therapy may become a more significant tool in the
fight against genetic illnesses that affect humankind.
5. Imagine a product called multi-replicator was developed by a
nanotechnologist and made available to anyone. This replicator could allow
people to simply produce any item they need themselves without the help of
any manufacturer or a company. What would this do to our economy as we
know it today? Can you think of some impacts of these breakthroughs on
employment, science, politics, society, and other sectors. What are some of
the social and ethical considerations scientists must consider in conducting
research in nanotechnology?
Because of this product, I believe the economy will be very different from what
it is now because there will be less demand for various goods and materials in the
nation, which will drive up prices. Additionally, this would result in the suspension
of international trade between various nations. The development of sufficient needs
to meet everyone's needs would be one of the effects. The science of nanotechnology
is multidisciplinary, so some factors that should be considered are the materials that
will be used. This is because nanotechnology will require resources, and if it is not
controlled, it could disrupt the flow. On the other hand, if they can control the
product, it should be useful for good purposes and not be used in any crime.
