Function Vs relation

Watch out for the following terms:

FUNCTION
RELATION
DOMAIN
RANGE
RELATION FUNCTION

We relate values from a set of values (domain) to

another set of values (range).
RELATION
a set of ordered pair (x,y), where,
x is called DOMAIN (input), the set of first element and

y is called RANGE (output) , the set of second

element
RELATION: Example
Letter-Number Correspondence:
(a vowel is to 5, a consonant is to 3)
(a, 5) (z, 3) (r,3) (u,5)
domain is the set of letters
range can either be 3 or 5
RELATION: Example
Work and Salary correspondence:
(earn PhP 95.00 in an hour of working in a convenience store )

(3, PhP 285.00) (5, PhP 475.00)

domain is the number of hours working
range is the salary
RELATION: Example
Square root of a number
(49, -7) (49, 7) (121,11)
domain is the set of numbers
range is the positive and or negative
square root of the number
FUNCTION
is a type of relation where,
EACH element of the DOMAIN corresponds to EXACTLY
ONE element of the RANGE

Since function is a type of relation, therefore,

all functions are relation but not all relations
can be function
FUNCTION: Example
Letter-Number Correspondence:
(a vowel is to 5, a consonant is to 3)
(a, 5) (z, 3) (r,3) (u,5)
domain: letter
range: 3 or 5
MANY-TO-ONE FUNCTION
FUNCTION: other examples

Work and Salary correspondence:

(earn PhP 95.00 in an hour of working in a convenience store )

(3, PhP 285.00) (5, PhP 475.00)

domain: number of hours
range: salary
ONE-TO-ONE FUNCTION
NOT A FUNCTION: Example
Square root of a number
(49, -7) (49, 7) (121,11)

Why is this not a function?

NOT A FUNCTION: Explanation
Square root of a number
(49, -7) (49, 7) (121,11)
Observe that one domain 49, corresponded to
ranges 7 and -7, this violates the rule that for
an ordered pair to be a function, each domain
should correspond to EXACTLY ONE range.
SUMMARY: Relation vs. Function
no restriction
Relation

Function
} we relate values from a set of values (domain)
to the second set of values (range)

EACH element of the DOMAIN should corresponds to

EXACTLY ONE element of the RANGE

one-to-one Function many-to-one Function

PRESENTATION:
Aside from an ordered pair, functions can be presented
also in 4 other different ways:
mapping diagram
table of values
graph and
equation
