IMPLEMENTATION OF HALF WAVE AND FULL WAVE
RECTIFIER WITH SIMPLE CAPACITOR FILTER

AIM:
To design and build a regulated DC power supply that converts 230V AC to a
stable 12V DC output.

APPARATUS REQUIRED:

S.No Apparatus Name Range/Type Quantity

1. Step down Transformer 230/12 v 1
2. PN Junction diode IN4007 4
3. Resistors 1 KΩ 1
4. Capacitors 1000µF 1
5. CRO &probe - 1
6. Bread board - 1
7. Connecting wires - As per required

PRECAUTION:
Voltage and Current levels should not exceed the values specified for the device.
THEORY:
Rectifier changes AC to DC and it is an essential part of a power supply. The
unique property of a diode, permitting the current to flow only in one direction, is utilized
in rectifiers.
FULL WAVE BRIDGE RECTIFIER:
During the positive half cycles of the secondary voltage, diode D1 and D2 are
conducting and diodes D3 and D4 are not conducting. Therefore, current flows through the
secondary winding, D1, load resistor and diode D2. During the negative half cycles D3 and
D4 are conducting and diodes D1 and D2 are not conducting. Therefore current flows
through the secondary winding, diode D3, load resistor and diode D4.

In both cases, the current passes through the load resistor in the same direction. The
ripple factor of the bridge rectifier is same as that of full wave rectifier.

RECTIFIERS WITH FILTER:

All rectifier outputs contain considerable amount of ripple factor in addition to the
DC component. In order to avoid AC components, a filter is connected at the output of the
rectifier. Capacitor input filter, choke input filter, RC, CRC, LC and CLC filters are the
usually used filters. Capacitor input filter is the simplest and cheapest filter. A high value
capacitor C (say 1000 µF) is connected in parallel with the load resistor R. Capacitor
charges to peak value Vm when the output voltage of the rectifier increases. After the peak
value, the capacitor discharges through the load resistor slowly. Before the capacitor
voltage, drops substantially, next output ripple arrives and the capacitor recharges to peak.
The rms value of the filtered output is calculated assuming the wave as a triangular and it
is Vrms=Vm/2√3.

PROCEDURE:
1. Connections are given as per the circuit diagram.
2. Note the output in CRO
3. Readings are tabulated and graph is drawn.

5. Full wave rectifier with filter

RESULT:

Thus the power supply circuit was successfully designed and implemented a
regulated 230V AC to 12V DC power supply.
