Landing page
The landing page appears when you first access the GERP site. Two options are provided
to the user: login with a CWS ID and password or apply for access via an E-customer ID.
CWS ID – this is a corporate web security identification which a CAT dealer or
internal user would already possess. It is the same Id you would use to login into
other CAT marketing systems.
E-customer ID – this identification is provided to users from the general public.
Following the link will take you to a request form to obtain an identification and
password. Once you have an E-customer Id and password you will be able to access
the GERP web program with them.
Home page
Once logged into the GERP site you will be presented with your home page. It contains
the following items and options:
Tabs (across the top of the page)
o Home – The Home tab will always return you to this page
o Customers – This is where customer information may be viewed and updated
o Help – System help is provided here along with Help Desk contact
information
o Reference Library – This contains additional documents related to the
engines within GERP
o What’s New – This is where new information about GERP ratings and GERP
program announcements are found. If there is new information that has been
added since your last log in this tab will be open when first entering the page.

This was done to alert you of new ratings and functions that have been added
to the system.
Project bar (located just below the tabs)
o Projects – This button will change to reflect the current project you are
working on. It will also return you to the home page same as the Home tab
does.
o Engine Selection – This button takes you directly to the engine selection
page. On this page is where you select the engine rating you want to
analyze.
o Fuel Analysis – This button takes you directly to the fuel analysis page. Here
you may perform an analysis of a gaseous fuel by entering the constituents.
o Site Information – This button will be active only if you have selected an
engine rating. When active, selecting it takes you to the page where the site
conditions are entered for your analysis.
o Tech Data Output – This button will be active only if you have selected an
engine rating. When active selecting it takes you to the page containing the
output options such as Standard Tech Data sheet, Site Specific Data sheet,
Drawings, and others.
Scratch Project
o What is it – A system generated ad hoc project that allows a user to jump to
a fuel analysis or an engine selection without having to create a formal
project.
o Purpose – The scratch project holds the information from this ad hoc activity
allowing you to return to it if necessary. You may also save the scratch project
as a formal project if desired.
o Action Icons – Save the scratch project to a formal project ( ), Delete the
project ( )
New Project button (opens a dialogue to enter project information and start the
project)
o Project Information – This first section is where you will enter a unique project
name. There is an area to enter a description of the project or notes about this
project. You will also select a customer for the project. If the customer does
not currently exist, you may add one from here by selecting the ellipsis button
( ).

o Prepared by – This will need to be populated the first time you create a
project. Once entered the information will be saved and carry forward to all
new projects. You may edit the information at any time and the new
information will be utilized for all new projects.
o Prepared on Behalf of – This is optional information and will not carry forward
to any new projects.
Import XML button
o Purpose – This will allow you to import projects from the desktop version
of GERP that were exported to an XML file.
o Import function – Clicking the Import XML button opens a file navigation
dialogue allowing you to select the .xml file to import into GERP. This will only
import projects from the GERP desktop export. For projects that have multiple
runs they will be imported as multiple projects with the same name and a run
number. Additional information about the imported project may be found
within the “Brief Description” field of the project information dialogue.
SRR Active (only available to SRR engineers)
o This button will only appear to those engineers that work Special Ratings
Requests. The “Active” button filters your project listing grid to only show
projects within the GERP database that have an active SRR attached to them.
SRR Complete (only available to SRR engineers)
o This button will only appear to those engineers that work Special Ratings
Requests. The “Complete” button filters your project listing grid to only
show projects within the GERP database that have a completed SRR
attached to them.
Search box
o The Search box performs an active search of your project listings as you type.
It allows you to search for any piece of information within the grid columns of
your project listings refining the list down to only those projects that contain
the entered text.
Project Grid
o Sorting – Clicking on the title of a grid column will sort the data by that column.
First click in ascending order. Second click in descending order.

o Filter boxes – The boxes below your project grid allow you to search just that
column for the matching data. Similar as the Search box it is an active search
that filters the results as you type.
o Status Icons – These correlate with the different sections of the project,
engine is Engine Selection, flame is Fuel Analysis, thermometer is Site
Information. When all information has been entered for a section of the
project there will be a green circle with a check mark indicating its completion
( ). If the section is not complete there will be a yellow circle with a
horizontal line ( ). Warnings on the project are indicated by a triangle, either
yellow with a “i” or red with a “!” ( ), depending on the severity of the
warning. One last icon is the Special Rating Request submission indicator ( ).
This will appear if the project has been submitted for an SRR.
o Action Icons – Save the scratch project to a formal project ( ), Edit the project
information ( ), Make a copy of the project ( ), Share the project with
another user ( ), Delete the project ( )
o Paging – Located below the Project Listing grid is the page indicators that
allow you to move through your list of projects.
Settings
o The Settings dialogue opens when clicking on the gear icon at the top right of
the home page. This is where you can set the defaults to be used when starting
a project. Options are available for application, unit of measure, emissions
units, power factor, altitude, inlet air temp, and cooling system safety factor.
You may also enter defaults for you company information such as company
name, dealer name, dealer contact and email.
Engine Selection
The Engine Selection is the second option in the project bar. It opens the page
containing Engine Filtering and Engine Rating Selection grids.
Engine Filtering
o The Engine Filtering grid provides drop down filter lists of the parameters
available based on the application selected. The Engine Rating Selection grid
will be filtered based on the selections made. When only one selection is
available in the parameter list, the text will turn blue.
o Clear All – this button clears all filters selected enabling you to start your
search over easily.

o Blue arrow button ( ) – this collapses the Engine Filtering dialogue providing
more room on the screen for the Engine Rating Selection grid columns.
Engine Rating Selection grid
o Sorting – Clicking on a column name sorts the grid in ascending order by that
column. Clicking again sorts the grid in de-sending order.
o Reposition columns – You may position the columns in whatever order you
desire simply by clicking and dragging the column to the desired position. The
order will remain this way until you change it.
o Reset Button – The user can return the columns to their original positions by
clicking on the Reset button located above the Engine Rating Selection rows.
o Results – The number of available performance ratings will appear in the
Results value located at the top right section of the Engine Rating Selection
page, based off the engine filters selected.
Engine Filtering Parameter Descriptions
o Application - This is the end-use application that the engine/generator-set will
be used in. For example, all generator-sets will be available in the Electric
Power application for power generation.
o Performance Rating Number - Each unique engine/generator-set has a
performance rating number; this helps simplify performance data look-up.
o Engine Model - Identifies what engine type/series is tied to the performance
rating.
o Rating Strategy - Defines the differences in performance and/or application of
the engine/generator-sets. Usually this represents a hardware difference, for
example, an Emergency Rating Strategy utilizes fast-starting technology.
o Rating Level: Defines the intended operation or hour usage of the
engine/generator-set.
o Aspiration - This is the method of how the engine combustion air is delivered
through the air system. For example, a TA or Turbo Aspired engine has an
exhaust-driven turbocharger that increases the mass of intake air beyond what
can be produced by a NA or Naturally Aspirated engine at atmospheric
pressure.
o Pumps: Indicates if the engine utilizes installed engine-driven coolant pumps or
not.
o Rated Electric Power (ekW) - Shows the advertised electrical power the
generator-set is rated to.
o Frequency: Indicates the operating frequency (Hz) the generator-set is rated
for.

o Package Type - This provides the packaging details of the generator-set. For
example, WITH RADIATOR indicates that the generator-set is packaged with
radiator from the factory and the performance data includes the radiator
capabilities.
o Voltage - Shows the advertised voltage the generator-set is rated at.
o Rated Engine Power - Indicates the advertised power that the engine is rated
at.
o Rated Speed (rpm) - Shows the advertised speed the engine is rated at.
o Engine Fuel Type - This indicates what type of fuel that the engine/generator-
set is designed to run on. For example, low energy fuel types like Landfill or
Biogas require a larger fuel system to achieve the same power as an engine
designed to run on pipeline natural gas.
o Emission Description - Defines the emissions identifier that is associated with
the engine/generator-set. For example, low emission units will display the NOx
setpoint that the engine/generator-set is designed to run at. For a unit setup
for a three-way exhaust catalyst rating, the emissions description will display
the percent oxygen in the emissions.
o Combustion Description - Provides the combustion strategy of the
engine/generator-set. For example, a Low Emission engine/generator-set
utilizes a lean burn combustion strategy, while a Integrated Catalyst unit uses a
rich burn strategy.
o Air Fuel Ratio Control - Shows whether an AFRC or Air Fuel Ratio Controller,
which is used to help regulate the NOx emission, is installed from the factory or
not.
o Fuel System Description - Indicates what air-fuel mixer the engine/generator-
set is designed to use. For example, the LPG IMPCO fuel system is a low-
pressure fuel system utilizing an IMPCO carburetor. The CAT LOW PRESSURE
fuel system uses a fuel valve controlled by the engine ECM to determine the
air-fuel mixture. A newer fuel system option is the H2 CAPABLE – CAT LOW
PRESSURE fuel system, which can run a blended fuel with up to 25% Hydrogen.
o Compression Ratio: Shows the compression ratio that the engine/generator-
set is designed to. This ratio is the cylinder volume from the piston top to
bottom positions.
o Aftercooler Water Temperature - This is the inlet temperature of the second
stage of the aftercooler circuit. The aftercooler is used to lower the
temperature of the air-fuel mixture that gets delivered to the cylinders, which
aids in avoiding detonation and enables higher engine power levels.

o Jacket Water Temperature - This is the outlet temperature of the jacket water
cooling circuit, which is the main coolant flow in the engine, used to transfer
heat from the engine’s cylinder block and heads.
o Cooling System Description - Describes the coolant system configuration uses
by the engine/generator-sets. For example, a system with JW+OC+1AC,2AC+GB
indicates that the engine’s cooling system is plumbed to have the jacket water,
oil cooler, and first stage of the aftercooler cooling circuits all in series with
each other. This engine also has a second cooling circuit with the second stage
of the aftercooler and gearbox cooling circuits ran in series with each other.
o Aftercooler Type - This shows the design type of the aftercooler used in the
engine/generator-set.
o Control System Description - Indicates the engine controller utilized in the
engine/generator-set design. For example, the ADEM 4 W/ IM control system
uses a ADEM 4 engine controller programmed with Island Mode performance
functionality.
o View Status - Shows the status of the performance ratings. If the
engine/generator-set is currently offered from an open price list, it will have a
Current status. If the unit is no longer offered or if it has change revisions, the
rating will have a Non-Current status.
o Serial Number - This provides a serial number range linked to some Non-
Current performance ratings.
Page Footer
o The page footer is where you will find the navigation arrows for moving
through the program along with the Save button.
o The output parameters are displayed here also. Clicking the Edit button
will open a dialogue box where you can modify these parameters.
o The Warnings indication is here in the footer also. Clicking on the icon will
pop up a box displaying all the warnings for the project.
Output Parameters
o The Output Parameters dialogue allows you to change the Unit of Measure,
Cooling System Safety Factor, Speed, Exhaust Recovery Temp, Power (Derate),
Emissions Units, Emissions Output, and add Ancillary Load for the project.
o These parameters are applied only to the project you are working on.

Fuel Analysis
The Fuel Analysis is the third option in the project bar. This is where you may run an
analysis of a gaseous fuel to calculate its properties. You may come directly to this
page without selecting an engine first.
Fuel Makeup
o This contains a dropdown listing of all the available fuels within your GERP
program. There are several standard fuels pre-loaded four your use, Coal
Seam, Field Gas, Low Energy, Methane, Nat Gas, and Propane. They are in blue
text.
o Gas Analysis – This is the fuel you select to enter your own fuel makeup. The
system will also default to this option if you edit one of the standard fuels.
o Save Fuel Analysis – Selecting this will open a popup dialogue where you can
enter a name for the fuel and save it as one of your custom fuels for use in
other projects.
o Delete – This allows you to delete any of your gasses. You can not delete
one of the standard gasses.
o Clear Fields – This resets all the constituent values to zero and the name to
Gas Analysis.
o Calculate – After entering the fuel constituents you click this button to
calculate the fuel properties.
o View as PDF – This produces a PDF of the fuel you are working with. This will
contain the constituent grid, calculated fuel properties, conditions and
definitions, and fuel liquids information.
Constituent grid
o This is where you enter the Mole percentage values of the fuel you want to
analyze.
Calculated Fuel Properties
o The results of your fuel calculation are displayed here. These values are
what GERP will use in its site calculations.
o Caterpillar Methane Number - A calculated value using the combustion
qualities of the fuel composition, that can affect engine settings such as
ignition timing or even limit the engine power to avoid denotation.
o Lower Heating Value - A calculated value that reflects the total energy
content minus the latent heat of vaporization, which is the energy lost to
the conversion of water from a liquid to a gas, of the fuel mixture.

o Higher Heating Value - A calculated value of the total energy content of the
gas mixture.
o WOBBE Index - A fuel property that accounts for both the energy content of
the gas mixture and the fuel’s ability to flow through the fuel system.
o THC Free Inert Ratio - A fuel property that evaluates the combustible fuel
constituents versus the non-combustible ones. This ratio is used to
determine if low energy fuels, such as landfill fuel, will have enough energy
to generate the published power.
o Total % Inerts (N2, CO2, He) - This value is the total percentage of the non-
combustible constituents in the gas mixture.
o RPC % - RPC or Relative Power Capability is a ratio of the LHV of the gas
mixture versus the fuel used to develop the engine/generator-set
performance rating.
o Compressibility Factor - This is a ratio using the molar volume of the gas
mixture to the molar volume of an ideal gas.
o Stoich A/F Ratio (Vol/Vol) - This value is the stoichiometric air/fuel ratio in
volume, and it shows the amount of air in volume required to completely
burn one volume of the gas mixture.
o Stoich A/F Ratio (Mass/Mass) - This value is the stoichiometric air/fuel ratio
in mass units.
o Specific Gravity (Relative to Air) - This value is a ratio of the molecular
weight of the gas mixture to the molecular weight of air. It’s useful for
converting between units of mass and volume.
o Fuel Specific Heat Ratio (K) - This value is a ratio of the gas mixture’s heat
capacity at a constant pressure to the heat capacity at a constant volume.
Site Information
This is the fourth option in the project bar. Here you enter the site conditions for where
the engine will run. This is only active once you have selected an engine.
Engine Information
o This displays the performance number of the engine you are analyzing
along with a grid of information about that particular engine.
Rating Conditions
o In this section is where you can enter the site conditions for this
calculation. If you have set defaults in the Settings dialogue those Site

Rating values will appear here. You may override them as desired within
the confines of the engine you are evaluating.
o Hitting the Calculate button will run a site rating calculation based on the
information you have entered.
o SRR button – This will appear but will be disabled unless you have saved
the project as a named project. You can not launch an SRR from a scratch
project. Upon clicking the SRR button a popup dialogue box will appear.
Complete the required information and submit your request. This will
generate an inquiry in the Customer Solution Quoter system. Once the
inquiry is created you may return to the SRR popup and the inquiry
number will be displayed. The project will be locked preventing any
changes.
E-Customer ID’s are not allowed to submit an SRR. You will need to
contact your local CAT dealer and share your project with them. The
dealer must submit the SRR request.
Site Information Parameter Descriptions
o Altitude – A user-defined value that reflects the site altitude that the
engine/generator-set will be installed at.
o Inlet Air Temperature – A user-defined value of the air temperature at the
inlet of the engine/generator-set and/or enclosure.
o SCAC Temperature – Certain engine/generator-sets have performance
data published at different SCAC temperatures. These associated SCAC
temperatures will appear in this drop-down window. If more than one
value is available, the user will have the opportunity to enter a user-
defined value that is in-between the multiple values and GERP will
calculate the results accordingly.
o JW Temperature – This is the outlet temperature of the jacket water
cooling circuit, which is the main coolant flow in the engine, used to
transfer heat from the engine’s cylinder block and heads.
o Emission Setting – This value indicates the emissions identifier that is
associated with the engine/generator-set. For example, low emission units
will display the NOx setpoint that the engine/generator-set is designed to
run at. For a unit setup with a three-way catalyst rating, the emissions
description will display the percent oxygen in the emissions.
o Fuel – This drop-down window will display all the default and user saved
fuels to choose from.

Generator Settings
o This dialogue appears below the Rating Conditions if you have selected a
gen set. It allows you to modify the Power Factor, Voltage and Generator
Efficiencies within the parameters of the rating.
o Grid Code – A grid code is a set of rules that must be met by power
generating units to gain permission to access the electricity grid. As electrical
grids expand, new grid codes are being introduced to enable integration of
distributed generation adding capability and improving reliability. If a
generator-set is compliant to a specific grid code, it will appear in the grid
code drop-down window.
Ambient Based Rating
o For ratings that utilize this option a dialogue will appear below the Rating
Conditions. Here you will be able to customize the Ambient Temperature
Capability within the parameters of the rating.
Results
o The Results grid displays both the Standard Rating values and the Site Rating
values for the engine and conditions you are evaluating.
o Rated Electric Power (ekW) - Shows the advertised electrical power the
generator-set is rated to.
o Power Factor – A user-defined value found in the generator settings. Power
factor (PF) is the ratio of the real power (ekW) to the apparent power (kVA).
o Rated Electric Power (kVA) – A calculated value that displays the apparent
power of the generator-set.
o Rated Engine Power – A calculated value that displays the available power
of the engine.
o Rated Speed – A set value that displays the speed, in rpm, of the engine.
o SCAC Temperature – A set value that displays the inlet temperature of the
SCAC cooling circuit of the engine/generator-set.

o Inlet Air Temperature – A user defined value of the air temperature at the
inlet of the engine/generator-set and/or enclosure.
o Altitude – A user-defined value that reflects the site altitude that the
engine/generator-set will be installed at.
o Fuel Methane – A calculated value of he Caterpillar Methane Number using
the combustible qualities of the gas mixture.
o Fuel Consumption – A calculated value that displays the amount of gas
mixture the engine/generator-set will consume to create the rated electrical
power.
o Inlet Manifold Pressure – A calculated value that displays the pressure of the
air/fuel mixture flowing through the inlet manifold of the engine/generator-
set.
o Set Point Timing – A calculated value that displays the engine timing required
to achieve the rated electrical power.
o Exhaust Temperature – Engine Outlet – A calculated value that displays the
temperature of the engine/generator-set exhaust measured at the engine
outlet.
o Exhaust Gas Flow – A calculated value that displays the volumetric flow of
the exhaust gases flowing out of the engine/generator-set at the rated
electrical power.
o Exhaust Mass Gas Flow – A calculated value that displays the mass flow of
the exhaust gases flowing out of the engine/generator-set at the rated
electrical power.
o CO2 (Nominal) – A calculated value that displays the nominal CO2 emission
amount in the exhaust at rated electrical power.
o CO2e (Nominal) – A calculated value that displays the nominal CO2e
emission amount in the exhaust at rated electrical power.
o Exhaust Oxygen – A calculated value that displays the percentage of Oxygen
in the exhaust at rated electrical power.
o Desired NOx – Engine Setpoint – A set value that the engine/generator-set is
designed to run at.
o Heat Rejection to JW – A calculated value that displays the amount of heat
that will be rejected in the jacket water cooling circuit.
o Heat Rejection to Atmosphere – A calculated value that displays the amount
of heat that will be rejected to the atmosphere.
o Heat Rejection to Lube Oil - A calculated value that displays the amount of
heat that will be rejected in the oil cooler cooling circuit.

o Heat Rejection to AC Stage 1 - A calculated value that displays the amount of
heat that will be rejected in the first stage of the aftercooler cooling circuit.
o Heat Rejection to AC Stage 2 - A calculated value that displays the amount of
heat that will be rejected in the second stage of the aftercooler cooling
circuit.
Tech Data Output
This is the fifth or last option on the project bar. Here is where you may view and print
the data produced by GERP and other technical information.
Site Tech Data
o This selection generates the site technical data sheet.
Optional Graphs
o This selection will generate a report that includes the graphs you select. Graph
options are:

to the selected rating.
Related Data
o This selection queries the Electronic Media Center for any other related
documents published for the selected rating.
Report Builder
o This selection builds a report based on the options you select. These are:
