Some experts believe that it is better for children to begin learning a foreign language

at primary school rather than secondary school. Do the advantages outweigh the
disadvantages?
There is an ongoing debate about whether children should start learning a foreign
language in primary or secondary school. While starting to learn a language early can
bring certain drawbacks, the benefits it has are far more significant.
There are several disadvantages that can be reaped from early language studying.
The first disadvantage is language disorder when children are confused with multiple
languages and struggle to develop language skills naturally, they may mix vocabulary
from both languages when speaking. Furthermore, children who are forced to learn a
foreign language at a young age may be restricted to entertainment or personal
hobbies. The time that children can spend on extracurricular activities or artistic
activities may be reduced. This can lead to an imbalance in life when children do not
have enough time to explore and develop their interests through taking part in
activities.
Nevertheless, starting to learn a foreign tongue at a young age can also have some
benefits that overshadow the aforementioned drawbacks. Firstly, starting early allows
children more time to get used to and practice. For example, if children start learning
from primary school until grade 12, they will have more than 12 years to practice this
language. But if they wait until grade 6 to start studying, their available time for
language study will be significantly shortened. Moreover, the higher the grade is, the
more knowledge from other subjects such as Math, Physics, or Chemistry is.
Therefore, children have to divide their time reasonably for other subjects, and there
will not be much time left to develop foreign languages like before. Another
advantage of this is it helps children explore the world and cultures as it gives
children access to many documents, books, newspapers, and movies from different
cultures. Children will not only learn about language but also learn about the history,
culture, and traditions of different countries to have different viewpoints and help
stimulate their understanding and curiosity.
In conclusion, although learning a non-native language can cause some obstacles,
it can do more good than harm. It fosters children's growth and knowledge, both of
which are beneficial in the long term. Therefore, encouraging children to learn foreign
languages early is a wise choice for their future.
