FOREWORD
IS0 (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation
of national standards institutes (IS0 Member Bodies). The work of developing
International Standards is carried out through IS0 Technical Committees. Every
Member Body interested in a subject for which a Technical Committee has been set
up has the right to be represented on that Committee. International organizations,
governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
Draft International Standards adopted by the Technical Committees are circulated
to the Member Bodies for approval before their acceptance as International
Standards by the IS0 Council.
International Standard IS0 3599 was drawn up by Technical Committee ISO/TC 3,

ANNEX
METHODS OF TEST
A.1 MEASURING UNCERTAINTY
The in herent errors of measurement of a vernier cal liper may be checked with gauge block combinations of k size,
chosen to cover a number of points both over range of the instrument and that of the vernier.
Th e measuring faces of the gauge blocks shall be placed between the jaws, and the outside measuring faces of the calliper shall
be checked at three poi nts.
A.2 MEASURING FACES
A.2.1 Flatness
The flatness of the faces for external measurement may be checked by applying a “knife edge” straightedge, or by another
appropriate method
A.2.2 Parallelism
The paral lelism of the faces for external measurement may be checked by in serting gauge between them at different
points of the jaws and at different measured lengths by varying the sizes of the gauge blocks.
The para Ilelism of the faces for external measurement shall not be affected by clampi ng the slider. This may be checked bY
iTeh STANDARD PREVIEW
leaving a narrow gap between the measuring faces and observing this gap when clamping the slider.
The parallelism of the faces for i nternal measurement may be checked b y means of a m icrom eter. To ensure that the radius is
not too large, the combined jaws may be checked([Link])
with a plain ring gauge of 5,10or20 mmd iameter, as aPP licable.
A.2.3 Scale lines SIST ISO 3599:1999
The thickness of the scale lines
[Link]
may be checked by direct measurement with a microscope fitted with a micrometric device.
