Exercise 1: Determine whether the following sets are subspaces of the vector
space ℝ under the operations of addition and scalar multiplication defined on
ℝ . Justify your answers.

1) 𝑊 = {(𝑥, 𝑦, 𝑧) ∈ ℝ : 2𝑥 − 7𝑦 + 𝑧 = 0}.

2) 𝑊 = {(𝑥, 𝑦, 𝑧) ∈ ℝ : 𝑥 − 3𝑧 = 0}.

3) 𝑊 = {(𝑥, 𝑦, 𝑧) ∈ ℝ : 𝑥 = 2𝑦, 𝑧 = 2}.

Exercise 2: Given the following vectors of ℝ

1 5 3
𝑢 = (1,7,2), 𝑢 = 1,1, , 𝑢 = , ,1 .
2 2 2
Check if the vector 𝑢 is a linear combination of 𝑢 and 𝑢 .

Exercise 3:

(I) Is the following set of vectors linearly independent? If it is linearly

dependent, find a linear dependence relation. For each vector in the set, find
whether it lies in the set spanned by the other vectors.

{𝑢 , 𝑢 , 𝑢 } = {(1,0,1), (1,1,0), (0,1, −1)},

{𝑣 , 𝑣 , 𝑣 } = {(2,0,1), (1,1,0), (0,0, −3)}.

(II) Check that the three vectors 𝑣 , 𝑣 , 𝑣 form a basis of ℝ .

Exercise 4: In the vector spaces ℝ , +, . let

𝑊 = 𝑋 = (𝑥, 𝑦, 𝑧) ∈ ℝ : 𝑥 + 𝑦 + 2𝑧 = 0 .

Find a basis of the subspace 𝑊.

Exercise 5: Define a linear transformation 𝑓 ∶ ℝ ⟶ ℝ by

𝑓(𝑥, 𝑦, 𝑧) = (𝑥 + 𝑦 + 2𝑧, 𝑥 + 3𝑦 + 𝑧),

Find ker𝑓, Im𝑓 and determine whether 𝑓 is injective or surjective.
