Module 1

Introduction to Networking

Understanding the Basics

| March 2024
SSEJ | After School
Outline

 Computer Networking

 Types of networks (LAN, WAN, MAN, WLAN)

 Network components (nodes, hosts, routers, switches)

2
Objective

 Understand the fundamentals of computer networks and

the key components that form a network.

3
What is Computer Networking?
 Computer networking is about connecting two or more devices to share
information and resources.

Why is it Important?
 It allows us to exchange data, share files,
and work together efficiently.

 We can use shared printers, storage, and

software, making collaboration easier.

 Networks improve communication and

productivity in various tasks.

4
Types of Networks
Local Area Network (LAN)  A Local Area Network (LAN) is a
network that connects devices
within a limited area such as a
home, office building, or school
campus.

 Characteristics: Fast data transfer,

internal resource sharing.

 Examples: Home networks, office

networks, school computer labs.

Wide Area Network (WAN)  A Wide Area Network (WAN) is a
network that spans a large
geographical area, connecting
multiple LANs and other networks
together.

 Characteristics: Slower data

transfer over long distances.

 Examples: Internet, corporate

networks across cities.

Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)  A Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)

connects multiple LANs within a city or
metropolitan area.

 Characteristics: Covers a larger area

than a LAN but smaller than a WAN.

 Examples: Networks connecting

buildings within a city, university
campuses.

Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN)  A Wireless Local Area Network
(WLAN) uses wireless technology to
connect devices within a limited area.

 Characteristics: No physical cables

required, devices connect via Wi-Fi.

 Examples: Home Wi-Fi networks,

public Wi-Fi hotspots, office wireless
networks.

Network components

Nodes

 Definition: Nodes are devices

connected to a network, such as
computers, printers, or servers.

 Function: Nodes communicate

with each other and share
resources within the network.

9
Cont.….Network components

Hosts

 Definition: Hosts are devices on a

network that have unique identifiers, like
IP addresses, and can send or receive
data.

 Function: Hosts are endpoints that

initiate or respond to communication
within the network.

10
Cont.….Network components

Routers
 Definition: Routers are networking
devices that direct data packets
between different networks.

 Function: Routers determine the

best path for data to travel and
enable communication between
networks.

11
Cont.….Network components

Switches

 Definition: Switches are devices

that connect multiple devices
within a local network.

 Function: Routers determine the

best path for data to travel and
enable communication between
networks.

12
Hands-on Lab - Network Setup

 Objective: Set up a basic LAN using routers, switches, and

computers.

 Tasks:
 Configure IP addresses.

 Establish connectivity between devices.

 Test data transfer within the network.
