ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY
PRACTICAL

Aim: To determine the amount of Sulphate present in the given solution

Turbidimetrically.

Basic calculation for SO42- solution preparation:

We have to prepare standard 1000 ppm SO42- ion solution using Na2SO4
As per definition -
1 mg SO42- 1000 ml 1 ppm SO 42- solution
1000 mg SO42- 1000 ml 1000 ppm SO 42- solution
250 mg SO42- 250 ml 1000 ppm SO 42- solution

Now we have to get 250 mg of SO42- using Na2SO4

[At Wt Na = 23, S = 32 and O = 16; Mol wt of SO4 = 96 and Na2SO4 = 142]
When we take 142 mg of Na2SO4 we get 96 mg of SO42-
142 mg K2SO4 = 96 mg SO42-
X mg K2SO4 = 250 mg SO42-
X = [(142 x 250) / 96] = 370 mg
So if 370 mg Na2SO4 is dissolved in 250 mg then we get 1000 ppm SO42- Solution

Procedure:

Supplied Unknown:

You are supplied with Sulphate unknown solution in 100 ml standard flask. Dilute the
given solution to 100 ml with distilled water.
Use 10 ml of this solution to as experimental unknown as no 6 solution of the
observation table given below.

Preparation of standard1000 ppm SO42- Solution

1. Weigh 370 mg of Na2SO4 accurately and dissolve it to 250 ml using distilled
water in standard flask. This will give you 1000 ppm SO 42- Solution. (refer
calculation above).
2. Pipette out 10 cm3 of prepared standard 1000 ppm SO 42- Solution in 100 cm3
standard flask. Dilute to the mark to get 100 ppm experimental standard stock
solution.

Preparation of calibration curve and experimental unknown:

1. Prepare a set of solutions as given in the following table.
2. Measure the Turbidity of all these solutions using solution no “0” as blank.
Observation table:

Calculations:

Concentration of SO42- in 10 ml diluted unknown solution = ___ (X) ppm from the graph.
So the concentration of given unknown (100 ml) solution = _____ (10X) ppm SO42-
The concentration of given unknown (100 ml) solution = _____ (10X) mg / lit SO 42-
As the given Unknown solution was 100 ml
The amount of SO42- in the given solution = _______ (X) mg.

Results:
1. Turbidity of 10 ml diluted unknown solution = _______
2. Concentration of Sulphate in the given solution = ________ ppm (10X)
3. Amount of Sulphate in the given solution = ________ mg (X)
