AP English Literature and Composition You will only have 60 minutes of class time to work in your group.

Directions: In cooperative learning groups (of 3 people) work together to answer the following questions. After you have answered the questions, devise a way to teach the class about your assigned topic. Your lesson to the class should NOT simply be a group member reading aloud the groups findings. Design an interactive lesson that will involve the class in uncovering information about your topic and making your classmates and your teacher THINK. Each presentation should last between 10 to 12 minutes. You will be presenting your work on THURSDAY. Answer all parts of the following question and be sure to include specific references (quotes with page numbers) to the text. Group 1 How does Meursault feel when he sees old Salamano beating his dog? How does he feel when Raymond tells him he beat up his girlfriend? Discuss Meursaults attitude in relation to these two events. Compare Meursaults reaction to Thomas Perezs grief over the mothers death, and his reaction to old Salamanos despair over his lost dog. Since he treats his dog so harshly, why do you think Old Salamano is so upset when the dog runs away? How does Camus discussion of these ideas relate to existential thinking? Group 2 When Marie asks Meursault if he loves her, he displays an indifferent, almost apathetic attitude towards her. Why would she continue to have a romantic interest in him? Discuss Meursaults feelings for Marie. He says he doesnt love her, yet he wants to make her happy. Why would Meursault agree to marry Marie? Considering the atmosphere in the visiting room, why do you think Marie is so cheerful and optimistic when she visits Meursault? Why would the prosecutor ask Marie questions about her relationship with Meursault? Does the prosecutor really consider this an important aspect of the case? Explain your answer. How does Camus discussion of these ideas relate to existential thinking? Group 3 Discuss Meursaults relationship with Raymond. How does he feel about becoming Raymonds pal, and why would he agree to write such a deceitful letter for him? Considering his indifferent attitude, why would Meursault agree to be Raymonds witness? Why does Meursault talk Raymond out of shooting the Arab? When Meursault shoots the Arab he tells us: I knew Id shattered the balance of the day What does he mean by this? Group 4 Meursault doesnt explain why he assumes his case will be very simple. Discuss the reasons why Meursault might feel this way. Why is the magistrate so upset when he talks to Meursault about God? Why is the lawyer worried about Meursaults behavior at his mothers funeral? Why would the prosecutor ask Marie questions about her relationship with Meursault? Does the prosecutor really consider this an important aspect of the case? Explain your answer. Meursault has difficulty trying to explain why he killed the Arab. What do you think his motivation could have been? Discuss how the prosecutor attempts to equate Meursaults crime of killing the Arab with the parricide case. Why? How does Camus discussion of these ideas relate to existential thinking? Group 5 Discuss how, during the trial, the emphasis shifts from an examination of the crime itself to a condemnation of Meursaults personality and behavior. Do you think justice is served by the verdict? Explain your answer. Can a man like Meursault, who is so at odds with societys conventions and morals, be given a fair trial? Is Meursault truly judged by a jury of his peers? Meursault states that he realizes that nothing was more important than an execution. What do you think he means by this, and how does the story about his father relate to his present circumstance? Why does the chaplain cry when he leaves Meursaults cell? Explain your answer. The Stranger Mock Trial


Homework due Thursday: Witnesses will prepare their sworn deposition. First paragraph must state their name, profession and involvement with the case or relation to the defendant. Second paragraph must state what they saw, observed, witnessed (support with textual evidence--- specific lines and page numbers)

Legal Team will discuss and outline their case and strategy Come up with list of questions for each witness. Make sure to research your witnesses and come up with/ask specific questions that can be either supported or disproved with evidence from the book. As the judge, Mr. Lin can choose to disallow certain questions and testimony if it cannot be supported by the story.

_____________________________________________________________________________ _ You will be given roughly a half hour of class time on Thursday 2/1 to work with your team and interview witnesses. Mock Trial will be held on Tuesday, February 7th. After group presentations on Thursday: (roughly 15 minutes) Defense will get to interview 6 witnesses of their choice and write down any notes that they might have. They can also use this time to get sworn testimony. If you are a witness, be extra careful about what you say. Anything you say can and will be held against you. Prosecution will interview the remaining 5 witnesses.

Next 15 minutes: Defense and Prosecution will switch witnesses.

Roles & Responsibilities The witnesses will work cooperatively with the lawyers to prepare responses to questions posed by the prosecution team and defense team. Witnesses must have specific knowledge of what happened along with specific textual evidence with relevant dialogue and details. Witnesses tell the jury what they think and feel (based on their understanding of their character) and are not to present gossip. The prosecution team will work cooperatively to prepare an address to the jury, formulate and present their arguments, and question witnesses. The prosecution lawyers must understand the

charges and determine what effects the defendants actions had on other people. The lawyers must find textual evidence and/or other sources to prove the defendants guilt and anticipate the ways the defense attorneys will try to minimize the issues. The prosecution team must develop an argument and supporting evidence which will convince the jury, demonstrate the strength of the argument through clear articulation, tone, and gestures, and speak in a way that the jury understands the importance of each point, the effects the crimes had on others, and the reasons that the defendant deserves punishment. Prosecution Team Head Prosecutor Prosecution Clerk Junior Prosecutor The head prosecutor will make the opening and closing addresses to the jury. The prosecution clerk will serve as fact checker prior to and during the trial and will have the responsibility of giving the Head and Junior Prosecutor the textual evidence to pursue a point or make an objection. Both the Head and Junior Prosecutor will question witnesses. The defense team will work cooperatively to prepare an address to the jury, formulate and present their arguments, and question witnesses. The defense lawyers must understand the charges and determine what effects their clients actions had on other people. The lawyers must find textual evidence and/or other sources to prove the defendants innocence or extenuating circumstances, and to anticipate and counter the arguments made by the prosecuting attorneys. The defense team must be familiar with their clients motives (why your client did what he did), actions (what your client did), and reactions (how your client responded to the actionswas your client remorseful, etc.) for the charge. The defense team must develop an argument and supporting evidence which will convince the jury, demonstrate the strength of the argument through clear articulation, tone, and gestures, and speak in a way that the jury understands the importance of each point, the extenuating circumstances surrounding the crime, and the reasons that the defendant deserves to be set free.
