3.0 Methods/Processes
3.1 Heat Treatment
3.1.1 Equipment Qualification
All heat treatment operations shall be performed utilizing equipment that is calibrated and
qualified in accordance with Annex C (Guidance for qualification of heat-treatment equipment) of
API Specification 8C – Fourth edition.
3.1.2 Furnace Loading
The loading of material within furnaces shall be such that the presence of one part does not
adversely affect the heat treating of any other part within the same heat treatment load.
3.1.3 Heat Treatment Procedure
Heat Treatment shall consist of Normalizing, followed by a conventional Quench and Temper.
The supplier shall determine the temperatures and quenching medium required to achieve the
specified properties.
3.1.4 Reheat Treatment
Material lots that do not meet the requirements of Section 4.2 of this specification but do meet
the material designation and chemistry requirements, may be subjected to complete Reheat

Treatment only once, and any material that fails to attain the required mechanical properties
after Reheat Treatment shall be scrapped. Mechanical properties must be confirmed by
mechanical testing of a material specimen from the same heat and heat treatment lot.
3.2 Material Qualification
3.2.1 Mechanical Test
The mechanical tests required by this specification shall be performed on qualification test
coupons representing the heat and heat treatment lot to be qualified. Tests shall be performed in
accordance with the requirements of ASTM A-370 and ASTM E-23 using material in the final heat-
treated condition.
3.2.2 Test Coupons
For qualification of material for general use, qualification test coupons shall be from the same
heat and heat treatment as the material they qualify. The size of the qualification test coupon
shall be determined using the equivalent round (ER) method. The ER shall be determined in
accordance with the requirements of API Specification 8C. Test specimens shall be removed from
integral or separate qualification test coupons such that their longitudinal centreline axis is wholly
within the centre core ¼ thickness envelope for a solid test coupon, or within 1/8 in (3 mm) of
the mid-thickness of the thickest section of a hollow test coupon. The gauge length on a tensile
specimen or the notch of an impact specimen shall be at least ¼ thickness from the ends of the
test coupon.
For qualification of material for manufacture of specific parts, test specimens taken from
sacrificial production parts shall be removed from the centre core ¼ thickness envelope location
of the thickest section of the part or from material cut from the equivalent location in a test
coupon representative of the part.
In all cases, test specimens shall be taken from locations suitable for confirming the design
intent.
4.0 Requirements
4.1 Chemical Analysis
Each heat of material shall be tested for conformance to the following chemical analysis:
Element Minimum (%) Maximum (%)
Carbon C 0.28 0.34
Manganese Mn 0.60 1.00
Phosphorus P - 0.025
Sulphur S - 0.025
Silicon Si 0.10 0.40

NOTE:
1. Unspecified residual and/or trace elements, as defined in ASTM A-751, are acceptable
within concentrations that do not significantly and deleteriously affect corrosion
resistance, mechanical, chemical, or metallurgical characteristics.
2. The results of the chemical analysis shall be reported per Section 4.6 of this specification.
4.2 Mechanical Requirements
All material meeting this specification shall be qualified to the following requirements in
accordance with Section 3.2
Unless otherwise noted, mechanical properties shall be tested for:
each heat of material
each heat treatment lot
Material lots that do not meet the mechanical requirements of this section but do meet the
material designation and chemistry requirements may be subjected to complete Reheat
Treatment per Section 3.1.4. Reheat Treatment is allowable only once, and any material that fails
to attain the required mechanical properties after Reheat Treatment shall be scrapped.
Mechanical properties must be confirmed by mechanical testing of a material specimen from the
same heat and heat treatment lot in accordance with Section 3.2 of this specification. A retest of
all mechanical properties listed in this section will be required to qualify said material.
4.2.1 Tensile Testing
The material shall meet the following mechanical properties after final heat treatment:
Property Minimum Maximum
Yield Strength (0.2% offset) 150,000 psi 165,000 psi
Ultimate Tensile Strength 160,000 psi -
Reduction of Area 25% -
Elongation in 2 inches 14% -
(coupon L:d = 4:1)
The tension test specimen shall have the longitudinal axis located parallel to the direction of the
longitudinal axis of the supplied material. If the material size or shape does not allow for a
standard full-size tensile specimen to be tested, a sub-size test specimen may be prepared and
tested per ASTM A-370.

4.2.2 Impact Testing
The Charpy impact test specimens shall have the longitudinal axis located parallel to the direction
of the longitudinal axis of the supplied material. If the material size or shape does not allow for a
standard full-size Charpy specimen to be tested, a sub-size specimen may be prepared and
tested per ASTM A-370.
The results of impact toughness tests of 3 specimens shall meet or exceed the following values at
a temperature of -4°F (-20°C):
Property Minimum Average Value Minimum Single Value
Energy (ft.-lb.) 31 24
4.2.3 Hardness Testing
The results of hardness tests shall meet or exceed the following values after final heat treatment:
Property Minimum Value Maximum Value
Hardness (1” below surface) 320 HB 365 HB
When data is unavailable hardness tests will be conducted as per ASTM A-370.
4.3 Dimensional Tolerances

order (PO).
4.4 Identification
Each supplied material unit shall be identified with the heat number and heat treatment lot.
4.5 Visual Inspection
A visual inspection to check for cracks, seams, laps, bursts, and other imperfections on the
surface shall be performed. In cases where discontinuities are found, they shall be completely
explored by grinding. Welding is not permitted. The dimensions at the ground area shall still
meet the minimum specified on the PO.
