DO's in a Laboratory:

1. Wear Proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):

o Always wear safety goggles, lab coats, and gloves when necessary. Specific
PPE may depend on the nature of the experiment or chemicals being used.
2. Follow All Instructions Carefully:
o Adhere to written protocols and standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the
tasks you are performing.
3. Label and Organize Materials:
o Properly label all containers, chemicals, and equipment to avoid confusion.
Organize your workspace to reduce clutter and prevent accidents.
4. Maintain Cleanliness:
o Keep the lab clean and tidy. Clean up spills immediately and ensure work
surfaces are free from chemical residues and clutter.
5. Ensure Proper Ventilation:
o Work in well-ventilated areas, especially when handling volatile chemicals.
Use fume hoods when required.
6. Dispose of Waste Properly:
o Follow guidelines for disposing of hazardous materials and chemicals. Use
designated bins for chemical, biological, or sharp waste.
7. Report Hazards Immediately:
o Report any accidents, spills, or broken equipment immediately to a supervisor
or safety officer.
8. Be Familiar with Emergency Procedures:
o Know the location and proper use of emergency equipment such as eyewash
stations, fire extinguishers, first aid kits, and emergency exits.
9. Work in Pairs or Groups:
o It’s safer to work with others in case of accidents or emergencies. Always
have a colleague nearby when performing potentially dangerous tasks.
10. Wash Your Hands:

 Always wash your hands before and after working in the lab, and especially after
handling chemicals, biological materials, or equipment.

11. Keep Hair Tied Back and Loose Clothing Secured:

 Prevent accidents by keeping hair and clothing secure so they do not come into
contact with equipment or chemicals.

12. Handle Chemicals Carefully:

 Follow material safety data sheets (MSDS) or safety data sheets (SDS) for all
chemicals to understand risks and appropriate safety measures
