1. The temperature of water in a beaker was 12℃. After heating the beaker gradually,
the temperature of water was increased by 13℃ per minute. The container was
heated for 4 minutes. (3 marks)

(a) Find the temperature of the water after heating.

12 + 13 × 4 = 64 0.5M

∴ the temperature of water after heating is 64℃. 1A

(b) The beaker is then put into the refrigerator, and the temperature of the water is
decreased by 4.8℃ per minute. Find the time taken for the water to become ice.
(Given that the freezing point of water is 0℃.)
64 1 0.5M
= 13
4.8 3

∴ it takes 13 minutes for the water to become ice. 1A

2. Solve the following equations.

(6 marks)
(a) 4(2𝑥 − 1) + 3(𝑥 + 1) + 1 = −22
8𝑥 − 4 + 3𝑥 + 3 + 1 = −22 1M

11𝑥 = −22

𝑥 = −2 1A

2
(b) − =

2𝑟 − 1 𝑟 + 2 5𝑟 − 5
24 × − = 24 ×
6 3 8 1M

4(2𝑟 − 1) − 8(𝑟 + 2) = 3(5𝑟 − 5)

8𝑟 − 4 − 8𝑟 − 16 = 15𝑟 − 15 1A

−5 = 15𝑟 1M

1
𝑟=−

3. In the figure, ABCD is a rectangle. Given that ∠𝐴𝐵𝐶 = ∠𝐵𝐶𝐷 = ∠𝐶𝐷𝐴 = ∠𝐷𝐴𝐵 = 90°,
find a, b and c. (4 marks)
D A

C B
E

In ∆ABE,
2a + 90° = 180° ∠ sum of ∆ 1M (0.5 for reason)
2a = 90°
a = 45° 0.5A

a + 2b = 90° 0.5M
45° + 2b = 90°
b = 22.5° 0.5A
In ∆CAB,
a + b + c + 90° = 180° ∠ sum of ∆ 1M (0.5 for reason)
45° + 22.5° + c = 90°
c = 22.5° 0.5A

4. John has x $100 notes and y $20 notes.
(4 marks)
(a) Write down the formula for the total value ($V) of her notes.

The required formula is 𝑉 = 100𝑥 + 20𝑦. 1A

(b) It is known that John has 7 $100 notes. He uses up all his $100 and $20 notes to
buy a toy car which costs $1350. Using the results in (a), find the number of
$20 notes John has?
When 𝑥 = 7 and 𝑉 = 1350,
1350 = 100(7) + 20𝑦 1M
1350 = 700 + 20𝑦
𝑦 = 32.5 1A
∴ She has 33 $20 notes. 1A

5. A washing machine was sold at $5400 and the profit percentage was 35%. Find the
cost price of the washing machine.
(3 marks)
Let the cost price be $y
𝑦 × (1 + 35%) = 5400 1M+1A
1.35𝑦 = 5400
𝑦 = 4000

∴The cost price of the washing machine is $4000. 1A

OR
5400 ÷ (1 + 35%) 1M+1A
= 5400 ÷ 1.35
= 4000

∴The cost price of the washing machine is $4000. 1A

Section C. Conventional Questions (30 marks)
1. (7 marks)
a). Find the general term of the sequence 7, 2, 3, 8, ……
a1 = 7 = -5(1) + 12
a2 = 2 = -5(2) + 12
a3 = -3 = -5(3) + 12 1M
a4 = -8 = -5(4) + 12
an = -5n + 12 OR 12 – 5n 1A
b). Hence, find the difference between the 18th term and 2 times of the 20th term.
a18 – 2(a20) = [12 – 5(18)] – 2[12 – 5(20)] 1M use general term
= -78 – 2(88)
= 98 0.5 A
The difference is 98 0.5 A
c). Determine whether 124 is a term of the sequence.
Suppose the kth term is – 124
ak = 12 – 5k 0.5M for using general term to find ak
-124 = 12 – 5k 1M for equating ak with -124
- 136 = -5k

k = 27

27 is not an integer 1A (-1/2 not mention “not an integer”)

 -124 is not a term of the sequence. 0.5A

2. (4 marks)
a) There are a number of marbles. Tom finds that the marbles can be evenly
distributed to 12 children, 18 children or 24 children. Find the minimum
number of marbles.
12 = 22(3)
18= 2(32) 1M (use LCM)
3
24 = 2 (3)
The LCM of 12, 18 and 24 is 23(32) = 72
 The minimum number of marbles is 72. 1A

b) If the three groups of children in a) are divided into several classes and in each
class there must be the same number of children from each group. What is the
maximum number of classes?
HCF of 12, 18 and 24 is 2(3) = 6 (from a) 1M (from a or do again)
The maximum number of classes is 6 1A

3. There are some chickens and rabbits in a cage. One-third of the rabbits were
born to have 3 legs. If the total number of heads is 35 and the total number of
legs is 90, find the number of (6 marks)
a). chickens
Let c be the number of chickens
The number of rabbit is 35 – c 1A
( )
2c + 4[ ] + 3[ ] = 90 1M 1A

6c + 8(35 – c) + 3(35 – c) = 270

385 – 5c = 270
c = 23
There are 23 chickens. 1A
b). rabbits with 4 legs.

(35 – c) = (35 – 23) 1M

=8
There are 8 rabbits with 4 legs. 1A

5. John bought a jacket for $800 and now he wants to make a profit of 120% by
selling it. In order to attract customers, he offers a 20% discount. (8 marks)
a) Find his expected selling price of the jacket.
The expected selling price is 800(1 + 120%) 1M
= 800(2.2)
= ($)1760 1A

b) What should the marked price of the jacket be so that he can make the profit
he expected?
Let $m be the marked price
m(1 – 20%) = 1760 1M1A
m = 1760/0.8
m = 2200
The marked price is $2200. 1A

c). A friend of John wants to buy the jacket. John thinks that even if he offers a
50% discount to his friend, he can still make a profit of 70%. Is he correct?
Explain your answer.
( %)
(100%) = (100%) 1M1A

= 37.5%
He isn’t correct because he can only make a profit of 37.5% 1A

Section D. Challenging Question (optional) (5 marks)
1. A cat keeps eating to gain weight while a dog keeps doing exercise to lose weight.
Later, the cat’s weight is increased by 20% and the dog’s weight is decreased by
10% such that their weights become the same. If their total weight was 8.75kg
originally, what is their total weight now?.
Let c kg be the original weight of the cat and that of the dog was 8.75 – c 1A
c(1 + 20%) = (8.75 – c)(1 – 10%) 1M
1.2 c = 0.9(8.75) – 0.9c
2.1c = 0.9(8.75)
c = 3.75 1A
Their present total weight is
3.75(1 + 20%) + (8.75 – 3.75)(1 – 10%) = 4.5 + 4.5 1M
= 9 (kg) 1A
