Course Code : CSE181501

MODULE : 6 : Advanced Topics
( Lecture – II )

Gautam Nath , Assistant Professor

CSE Department
Barak Valley Engineering College , Karimganj

Topics for today :
 Web Databases
 Distributed Databases
 Data Warehousing
 Data Mining

Prepared By - Gautam Nath , Asst Professor , BVEC , Karimganj , Assam 2

Web Databases

 A web database is a wide term for managing data

online.
 It is the database that we access through the web
by filling in a form on a web page.
 Usually the web database resides on a database
server i,e a computer that stores and provides
access to a database.
 It gives us the ability to build our own
databases/data storage without our being a
database expert or even a technical person.

Prepared By - Gautam Nath , Asst Professor , BVEC , Karimganj , Assam 3

Applicable uses –
 Businesses both large and small can use Web databases to
create website polls, feedback forms, client or customer
and inventory lists.
 MySQL is often included with Web hosting for managing
either personal or business website databases.

Advantages :

 It is ideal for situations when the information

needs to be shared or it needs to be accessed
from various locations.

 It is especially beneficial when the system is to be

shared between locations or different devices
( like tablets , computers and cell phones )

Distributed Databases
 A distributed database is a collection of multiple
interconnected databases, which are spread physically
across various locations that communicate via a computer
network.

Prepared By - Gautam Nath , Asst Professor , BVEC , Karimganj , Assam 6

Features :
 Databases in the collection are logically interrelated with
each other. Often they represent a single logical database.
 Data is physically stored across multiple sites. Data in each
site can be managed by a DBMS independent of the other
sites.
 The processors in the sites are connected via a network.
They do not have any multiprocessor configuration.
 A distributed database management system (DDBMS) is a
centralized software system that manages a distributed
database in a manner as if it were all stored in a single
location.

Goals of Distributed Database system

1. Reliability: In distributed database system, if one

system fails down or stops working for some time another
system can complete the task.

2. Availability: In distributed database system reliability

can be achieved even if sever fails down. Another system is
available to serve the client request.

3. Performance: Performance can be achieved by

distributing database over different locations. So the
databases are available to every location which is easy to
maintain.

Types of distributed databases
1. Homogeneous distributed databases system:
 Has same type of DBMS software stored on one or more
machines.
 Data can be accessed and modified simultaneously on
several databases in the network. Homogeneous distributed
system are easy to handle.

Prepared By - Gautam Nath , Asst Professor , BVEC , Karimganj , Assam 9

2. Heterogeneous distributed databases system:
 Has different types of DBMS software stored on one or
more machines.
 In this system data can be accessible to several databases in
the network with the help of generic connectivity (ODBC
and JDBC).

Data Warehousing

 A data warehouse is a technique for collecting and

managing data from varied sources to provide
meaningful business insights.
 It is a process of transforming data into information and
making it available to users for analysis.

Database Data warehouse
Stores current transactions and Stores a huge amount of historical
allow quick access to specific data and empowers fast requests
transactions for ongoing business over all the data, typically
processes, commonly known using Online Analytical
as Online Transaction Processing (OLAP).
Processing (OLTP).

It is used to manage very large It is used for data analysis

number of online short
transactions

e.g - Online banking , Online airline e. g - Amazon analyzes purchases by

ticket booking ,ATM etc its customers to come up with a
personalized homepage with
products which likely interest to
their customer.

Important Features of Data Warehouse

1. Subject Oriented
It provides useful data about a subject instead of the
company's ongoing operations, and these subjects can be
customers, suppliers, marketing, product, promotion, etc.
2.Time-Variant:
The different data present in the data warehouse
provides information for a specific period.
3. Integrated
A data warehouse is built by joining data from
heterogeneous sources.
4. Non- Volatile
It means, once data entered into the warehouse cannot
be change.

Prepared By - Gautam Nath , Asst Professor , BVEC , Karimganj , Assam 15

Advantages of Data Warehouse:

 More accurate data access

 Improved productivity and performance
 Cost-efficient
 Consistent and quality data

Data Mining
 Data mining is the exploration and analysis of large data to
discover meaningful patterns and rules.
 The insights extracted via Data mining can be used for
marketing, fraud detection, and scientific discovery, etc.

Prepared By - Gautam Nath , Asst Professor , BVEC , Karimganj , Assam 17

Important features of Data Mining:

 It utilizes the Automated discovery of

patterns.
 It predicts the expected results.
 It focuses on large data sets and databases
 It creates actionable information.

Prepared By - Gautam Nath , Asst Professor , BVEC , Karimganj , Assam 18

Advantages of Data Mining:

 Market Analysis:
Data Mining can predict the market that helps the business to make
the decision. For example, it predicts who is keen to purchase what
type of products.

 Fraud detection:
Data Mining methods can help to find which cellular phone calls,
insurance claims, credit, or debit card purchases are going to be
fraudulent.

 Financial Market Analysis:

Data Mining techniques are widely used to help Model Financial
Market

 Trend Analysis:
Analyzing the current existing trend in the marketplace is a strategic
benefit because it helps in cost reduction and manufacturing process as
per market demand.
