Welcome to the Contemporary Philippine Arts from the Regions 12 Project CAP-LRE
Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM) Module on Contemporary Art.
This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by educators both from
public and private institutions to assist you, the teacher or facilitator in helping the learners
meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum while overcoming their personal, social,
and economic constraints in schooling.
This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent learning
activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also aims to help learners acquire the
needed 21st century skills while taking into consideration their needs and circumstances.
In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the body of the

This module will help you understand one of the most essential learning
competencies of Grade 12 Contemporary Philippine Art from the Regions Quarter 1
(Philippine Artists and their Contributions to Contemporary Art):
Explain Filipino artists’ roles and identify their contribution to contemporary
arts. This will also help them to analyze contemporary art forms based on its
elements and principles. (CAR11/12CAP-0c -e-5)
At the end of this module, the learners are expected to:
• identify National Artists and their specific contributions in the art of our country.
(Emphasizing the region where the school is based);
• categorize the different art forms and describe the elements or principles
employed on it by the artist;
• appreciate the artists’ roles in the development and promotion of the Philippine
art by applying it on their art works; and
• construct an artwork which will show the different artforms of the artists given in
each topic that will focus on the promotion of the Philippine Contemporary Art.

Contemporary Arts
The Republic of the Philippines, through the NCCA and CCP, established the Order
of the National Artist Award or the Orden ng Pambansang Alagad ng Sining on April
27,1972, under Proclamation No. 1001. This award seeks to give honor to the Filipino
individuals with outstanding share in the cultural heritage and identity of the country by
means of their valuable efforts and contribution to Philippine Arts.
THE PRIDE OF BULACAN
Music
Who is Antonio Ramirez Buenaventura?

He was born in a family of musicians at Baliuag, Bulacan. He became a National
Artist of the Philippines for Music on 1988. Some of the outstanding work that he wrote after

undertaking field research are the following, Minuet (1937), which borrowed largely from
Igorot tunes for its thematic thrust, the popular Pandanggo sa Ilaw (1936), “Echoes from the
Philippines,” Varations and Fugere, Greetings and many others. The elements of music
employed on his composition are Timbre, texture, rhythm, dynamics, etc.
Dance
Who is Francisca Reyes Aquino?

She was a Filipino Folk Dancer and academic noted for her research on Philippine
folk dance. She is from Bocaue, Bulacan. She became a National Artist of the Philippines for
Dance on 1973. Her books include the following: Philippine National Dances (1946);
Gymnastics for Girls (1947); Fundamental Dance Steps and Music (1948); Foreign Folk
Dances (1949); Dances for all Occasion (1950); Playground Demonstration (1951); and
Philippine Folk Dances. One of her research is on tinikling, its time signature is 3/4 and the
elements present on the dance are Space, dynamics, rhythm etc.

Who is Guillermo Estrella Tolentino?

He was a Filipino Sculptor and Professor at the University of the Philippines. He is
from Malolos, Bulacan. He became a National Artist of the Philippines for Sculpture on
1973. Some of his famous sculptures are the Bonifacio Monument and UP Oblation. The
sensory elements of Visual Arts employed on his works are color, value, lines, texture, tint,
and shape. And the formal elements are emphasis, variety, unity, balance, pattern, rhythm,
contrast, harmony, and proportion.
